Presidential ponderings

Thank you to those members who've renewed their 2020 membership during January, it makes the jobs of Rich Collier and Matt Sleath, our Membership Secretary and Treasurer respectively, so much easier. It's great to have you back with us again for what promises to be an exciting year of cycling.

The velodrome trip was a great success judging by the smiles, it's such a shame we have to make the journey up to Derby to be able to experience the delights of riding in summer kit and summer speeds during the winter months and so let's hope the rumours of something being built nearer to home move one step closer to becoming reality this year. No doubt there'll be a repeat trip in the coming months.

Finally, January was a month tinged with sadness after we received the news about the death of Roy Douglas who back in the 1960s was an incredible time trials competitor for the club winning club trophies on no less than 22 occasions. We were honoured to be asked by Roy's family to accompany him on his final journey and heard many uplifting and funny stories of club cycling back then. One club trip left Banbury at midnight on a Friday with Roy leading the way. The next morning the group ended up at Lymington (125 miles) to catch the ferry across to the Isle of Wight which they then circumnavigated (65 miles) before riding back home again. That's an impressive effort.

Roy Douglas 1946-2010

Roy Douglas was a formidable club time trial rider putting in times that would still be very competitive some 55 years later, an incredible feat when the advancement of bike technology and rider training is factored in. During his time as a member, Roy won club trophies a total of 22 occasions, his first at the age of 17. He was known as "The Fast Man" to his club mates some of whom were at the funeral and happy to share cycling stories of their cycling ventures.

The club were honoured to be asked to provide riders to accompany the hearse from Roy's home and we'd also arranged for all seven of the club's trophies that bore his name to be on display at the wake.

2020 Membership renewal details

A New Year has attracted many new members to the club and we welcome Graham Martin, Charlotte Sleath, James Osborn, Matt Adams, David Barrow, Seamus Quinn, Emanuel Tabacarz, Tomasz Jurasz,  Dorothy Bean, Reuben Baker and Keith Machin to the club.

Subscriptions and any other payments to the club should now be paid direct to our Nat West account.

Hardriders TT entries close 18th February

The club's racing season starts in just 4 weeks time on 1st March with our annual Hardriders 23 mile event, posing a real test of a rider’s winter training efforts. Starting at Wroxton, competitors head north west, descending the notorious Sunrising Hill to Ettington where they then turn around to retrace the route to HQ, climbing back up the hill which is 17% at it’s steepest. The winner is presented with the Broughton Cup. Oh and everyone gets cake too!

Current holder of the trophy is Jack O'Neil, who also won in 2017 (pictured above on Sunrising Hill), when he set the course record of 51.38.

Entry can only be made via the link to the CTT website below which closes on 18th February.

Ride with some rugby professionals

Our friends at Banbury Rugby Club are organising a charity bike ride from Reading to Banbury (including transport for bikes and entrants down to the start) which gives entrants the chance to ride with some rugby union professionals.

It will be a ride of about 55 miles and will be fully supported to allow riders of all abilities to take part.

If anyone is interested please contact Mark at the email address above to register your interest.

Where Am I?

Members of the club's Facebook group may have seen a recent discussion on how to accurately pinpoint the location of an incident requiring the presence of our amazing emergency services, a scenario which can unfortunately happen on bike rides and races.

With many of our rides taking us far from the familiar roads of Banbury, being able to give that exact location can sometimes be difficult or even impossible.

However, there is a solution to this problem and it comes in the form of a free app and website called What3Words. The developers have broken the entire world down into 3m by 3m squares, each square is then assigned a unique identifier made up of three words (hence What3Words). E,g the location of the front door of Broadribbs where our club rides meet is pace.into.tube

It's much easier to remember three words than complex latitude and longitude co-ordinates via GPS and this method is now being used by our emergency services to ensure no time is lost in sending help to those in need.

Please have a look at the website and download the app - you never know when it will come in handy.

2020 Leiden Plaque

The Leiden Plaque is a trophy presented by the Dutch town and cycling club of Leyden to Oxford after the end of WWII to foster relationships between the two communities and has been raced for almost every year since between Oxfordshire's cycling clubs.

It is the turn of Banbury Star CC to host the 2020 race which will be held on the August Bank Holiday weekend - the Monday to be precise - and on our 25 mile TT course due to the limitations and issues previously experienced when racing on the A420 down at Cumnor.

This move will allow the competing clubs to enter larger fields than 2019, keeping to the spirit of the trophy that is to encourage cycle racing for all abilities.

STOP PRESS: The cycling club from Leiden are hoping to send a team from Holland, the first time they will have competed for the trophy!

Ten Pin Bowling - Thursday 6th February

Instead of the usual club monthly social night at the White Horse, February's evening isTen Bowling night which will include a choice of pizza and two games all for £14pp.
Shoes can be hired free of charge although standard shoes or trainers are allowed.

There are just a couple of spaces left, we do need to know numbers and have payment in advance. So if you want to join in the fun, please transfer £14 into the club account ASAP and enter 'TP' in the reference field.

Banbury Bike Box Hire

Taking your bike abroad can be a rewarding experience but there's always that nagging doubt that an overenthusiastic baggage handler may not treat your precious in quite the manner you do yourself.

However a solution is is at hand thanks to Gary Hammond of Banbury Bike Box Hire fame who is offering Banbury Star members a 12.5% discount on the usual hire rates for one of their extremely sturdy, and easy to use, Bikebox Alan products.

Gary is local to Banbury and offers a collection service, more details and a video of how a bike is packed in the box are on his website.

2020 TT Review

The 2020 time trial calendar is now live on the website. We've taken the opportunity to make a couple of tweaks based on a review of 2019s events. The major change is a move to July for the K4/10C "Chippy Ten". Running it later in the season will give us a lighter evening and hopefully less traffic as it will be the school holidays. In addition all of the roadworks between Bloxham and Chipping Norton should be complete by then (famous last words) so further improving cycling safety.

We're awaiting final confirmation from the relevant police authorities but don't envisage any changes from the proposed dates/courses.

In the coming weeks we'll populate the marshal/pusher/timekeeper roster with plenty of notice given.

Open Time Trial Map

Our website's Race Calendar has a curated list of local Open Time Trials to whet the appetite of those who enjoy turning themselves inside out on a regular basis. However finding the full list of Opens requires either purchasing and then pouring through and decrypting CTTs expensive paper handbook or trying to make sense of their website.

However, a new and free resource that's simple to use has just come online which shows a map of the UK that's overlaid with all Open TTs and is soon to be expanded with club events. It's well worth a look at the following link.

Cycle Silverstone GP circuit 2020 dates

Starting in April, Silverstone will again be opening up their 5.891km F1 Grand Prix circuit to cyclists.

However, this year apart from the 8 Family Cycling dates, they're introducing a further 6 dates for Time Trial Cycling. You have to be over 18 for these sessions and clubs are being encouraged to use this for training.

Full details, including conditions, prices and all the 2020 dates can be found via the link below.

BSCC Zwift

Zwift has become an incredibly popular home training tool and Banbury Star has started group training rides that are open to all members, not just those who race.

The rides are held each Monday evening at 7pm and are organised by Mark Boyles who will post the joining details on the club's Facebook group during the day.

Just bring your own coffee and cake.

Derby velodrome visit

A large group of members from Banbury Star and Team Cherwell made the journey up to Derby for another session on the velodrome's boards.

Two hot, fast and sweaty hours were spent on the track under the watchful eye of coach Phil who soon had the beginners riding high up the (rather daunting) banking. The experienced group who'd all experienced track riding before went through a more complicated series of drills as part of the accreditation process.

The session ended with big smiles all round, everyone stayed the right way up and were asking when a repeat visit will be made which will most likely be in the autumn. We are also investigating the possibility of running a junior session there too.

Race Squad news

Race Secretary Mark Boyles has been busy over the Christmas period uploading local open TT events, road races and crits in the area for next year - this includes, the distance, course code and the various links to register.

The date for our own annual road race has now been confirmed for Sunday 31st May. During recent years this event has coincided with the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, but this year it's now the following weekend.

So, with Christmas now behind us, what are you waiting for, let's get out training for the new season ahead.

Race bootcamp rides (open to all members) have started on Saturday afternoons, details will be posted on the club's Facebook group.

Local races have already started and the Abingdon Winter Crit Series being a popular test of winter race fitness.

Rising Stars needs help and support

The club have been running the Rising Stars programme since April 2018 and rider numbers grew steadily through the first four months to around 12 to 15 riders at each session.

However, in Lee Heron, we have only one qualified coach and as a result we cannot grow, or really continue, until we have more help and support from members. We know there is a lot of potential from enquiries we've had to develop youth cycling further within our club, but we need support from volunteers willing to become coaches.

We appreciate that this is to many a daunting step, so we hope the following will help any potential volunteers to understand the commitment required.

BSCC will pay for;

DBS Check, First Aid training and British Cycling Coaching Qualification

BECOMING A LEVEL 1 COACH

It takes approximately 40 hours to achieve the British Cycling Level 1 coaching qualification.

On-line modules covering child protection and coaching theory.

Video clips, reading and module assessments to test understanding.

Exercises to test knowledge gained in generating risk assessments and planning coaching sessions.

2 days practical learning

Day 1 - all about how to coach and picking up tips

Day 2 – Delivering a 10 to 15 minute session

Prerequisites to the Level 1 qualification

DBS Check – Part of the child protection and welfare rules

First Aid qualification – Minimum 6 hour accredited course

Level 1 Qualification authorises you to coach between 3 and 15 cyclists at one time

Coached sessions can only be structured around the British Cycling GEARS exercises

Level 1 coach is covered by British Cycling Insurance

COMMITMENT TO RISING STARS

Our target is to have 4 Level 1 Coaches

We plan to run two Rising Stars sessions per month – 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month

We will need a minimum of 2 coaches at each session

We will grow our riders from 9 or 10, to 30

We aim to identify a new home for Rising Stars that will allow greater diversity in cycling disciplines

Riders will be split by ability allowing greater focus on what each rider needs

Increased focus, for those who want it, on getting ready to race

With increased support BSCC will be able to host Junior Events

Mudguards and ride etiquette

We've had some very wet and muddy rides recently, really backing up our decision for the compulsory fitting of mudguards on winter club rides. Thank you all for complying.

For new members in particular, don't forget to read the club's own riding etiquette booklet via the link below.

Following regular appeals, we really do still need more volunteers for ride leaders, so please contact John Tustian for further details.
