TIMSS 2023 and ICILS 2023 International Databases
IEA is delighted to have published the International Databases (IDB) for TIMSS 2023 and ICILS 2023 in February 2025. The open-access databases contain a rich array of achievement and contextual data aimed at monitoring international trends and informing educational policy makers globally. The ICILS 2023 IDB contains process data which provides researchers with insights into students’ problem-solving strategies.
In every newsletter, we share a summary of how IEA studies have progressed in recent months. This includes an overview of IEA's flagship studies and other studies that IEA is a part of.
The LaNA (Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) 2023 Linking Study report and results were released on 25 February 2025 in Dhakar, Senegal. Results from the six participating countries are available. Find out more about the release here. IEA will release the LaNA IDB in April.
There is still time to submit to the IEA Research Awards before the deadline on Monday, 31 March 2025. Winners may be invited to present their research to the General Assembly in Madrid in October. Find out more.
Registration for the 11th IEA International Research Conference (IRC) is open! The IEA IRC will take place in Rome, Italy from 25–27 June 2025 and will be preceded by pre-conference workshops on 23–24 June. Register for the conference here.
IEA is delighted to introduce the refreshed visual identity of its studies which aims to preserve links to the strong reputation of each study while reflecting their transformation.

IEA will be at CIES in Chicago from 22–26 March 2025. The Research and Analysis unit will deliver a symposium dedicated to the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study.
IEA will release the second volume in theResearch for Educators series on Saturday, 22 March 2025 at the Education Support Centres Ireland AGM. A recording of the launch will be available on the IEA website.
We will also be at AERA and NCME in Denver in April 2025. Keep an eye out for the IEA booth at AERA.
The LaNA 2023 Linking Study Report is now available here. The report details results on reading and mathematics achievement from six participating countries, making way for a new assessment benchmark.
IEA and the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College are proud to release a full suite of open-access publications and the IDB for TIMSS 2023. The International Report, Encyclopedia, User Guide, and Teacher Snippetsare available.

The 16th volume in the Research for Educationseries utilizes data from TIMSS and ICCS. It aims to answer how students' environmental knowledge levels and their willingness to act in a pro-environmentally manner can differ across and within countries.
International large-scale assessments offer valuable data that may reveal areas for educational policy reform. Focussing on reform in Ireland, this Compass Briefhighlights important issues for policymakers to consider when using ILSA data in their own national context. The authors dive into the brief in Large-scale Assessments in 15 Minutes podcast.
Authored in partnership with UNESCO, the Compass Briefuses data from PIRLS 2021 to discuss educational policies and interventions that support boys in developing their reading skills, proposing actionable measures to support reading literacy achievement.
The first output from IEA’s Research and Development (R&D) Call Three is available. R&D aims to support research and innovation in education research and international large-scale assessments. See all outputs here.
