Meet the NUFSICISUM Winners: Vanessa Ayala Munoz

2019 saw a record number of nominations (59!) for the Coalition’s annual NUFSICISUM Youth Leadership Award. Over the coming months we’ll be introducing you to the six outstanding young NUFSICISUM winners, and celebrating the contributions they’ve made to their schools and communities through music.

This month, let’s get to know Vanessa Ayala Munoz from Tilley, AB, our youngest ever NUFSICISUM winner!

Spotlight on… Nicole Haber

For our final “Spotlight on…” feature of 2019 we’re thrilled to introduce you to Toronto-based singer-songwriter Nicole Haber. Originally from Barrie, ON, Nicole moved to Toronto about five years ago to do training in musical theatre and film, but her plans shifted, and pursuing different creative avenues, she was led back to what she started with - music! Nicole now specializes in electro-pop and draws from a variety of musical influences in her songwriting. Read more about Nicole, her music, and her journey.

2020 NUFSICISUM Youth Leadership Award

The Coalition for Music Education in Canada will be accepting nominations for the 2020 NUFSICISUM Youth Leadership Award beginning January 6, 2020! The Coalition believes in celebrating youth who are making a difference in their schools and communities through music, and will recognize the efforts and contributions of exceptional young leaders with Elementary, Intermediate, and Senior NUFSICISUM Awards.

Teachers are invited to nominate students who demonstrate a passion for music, and who have made positive contributions to their school and/or community music program(s). Teachers may submit nominations for multiple students. NUFSICISUM (read it backwards!) winners will each be awarded a plaque recognizing their achievement and cheque for $200, with an additional $200 awarded to their schools in support of music programming; runners up will receive a Certificate of Merit, and all nominees will receive a Letter of Recognition.

To nominate your students, please visit our website and complete the nomination form by March 13, 2020. The 2020 NUFSICISUM Youth Leadership Award winners will be announced on May 4, 2020 as part of the Coalition’s national Music Monday celebration.

Music Monday 2020

Registration for Music Monday 2020 is now open! On May 4, 2020 hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, musicians, and community members will join #TogetherInHarmony in a nationwide celebration of music. We’re thrilled to have Oscar Peterson and Harriette Hamilton’s iconic “Hymn to Freedom” as our Music Monday Anthem for a second year in a row. We’ll be unveiling several brand new resources throughout the year, including a new arrangement for jazz band in honour of Oscar Peterson’s 95th birthday. Register your event here to gain access to arrangements, get on the Celebration Map, and have your name entered in weekly registration prize draws.

Music is...

We asked delegates at the Ontario Music Educators’ Association conference in November to tell us what music is to them. We’ll be sharing one response every day (excluding holidays) until the NUFSICISUM Award nominations are open. Check out the daily posts on the Coalition’s Instagram account, or visit Facebook for weekly highlights.
