🐶 BREED
Australia's endurance athletes
Working dogs have been incredibly useful to humans for decades now and are still being bred for different purposes.
One of these incredible jobs is herding livestock which is detrimental to farmers.
With tons of energy, these dogs can herd all day long and in any condition.
Even in scorching heat and prickly terrain, the Australian Kelpie is still going strong and working independently.
This work is even more demanding than you would think as the Kelpie can travel a jaw-dropping amount of over 60 km (37 miles) in one day.
Not only their amazing endurance makes them best suited for the job but also their bravery and level-headedness.
Now you can imagine what a handful working breeds can be in a suburban setting.
Nonetheless, herding dogs are very popular including the Border Collie, German Shephard, and Australian Cattle Dog and you may even have one yourself. 🐕
They can be extremely active, alert, and aroused by movement which is exactly what makes them great herding dogs.
So if your dog reacts strongly to bikes, ball games, kids or even other dogs, it may be due to their breeding.
In a home, excess energy can translate to destructive behavior, barking, and anxiety.
However, it is not impossible to own a working dog as a pet and there are a few things you can do to make your and your dog's life easier:
- Early exposure and socialization are key and should be prioritized in the training (this applies to any dog breed).
- A strong recall is crucial for dogs that are so responsive to sudden movements and a must for off-leash time.
- Impulse control is another important point and your dog should have a strong stay command.
