BlackHer Shero of the Week

Our BlackHer Shero of the Week is Leslie Herod, a state representative for Colorado. Representative Herod is the first African American LGBTQ candidate elected to the Colorado State Legislature.  Her previous political experience includes serving as deputy political director for President Obama’s reelection campaign in Colorado.  She is also a co-founder of New Era Colorado, the state’s leading organization focused on the engagement of young people and she served as president of Colorado Black Women for Political Action.

What Black History Month Means to Me

Let's admit it, Black History Month used to be terrifying. 

As kids, we were forced to watch "PBS specials" which showed little girls being bombed, angry mobs assaulting peaceful marchers, and dogs trying to eat us alive. It was a lot.

Luckily, now that we're A LOT older, the stories are much more diverse and it’s a month that we've come to love!

Let's Make Low Voter Turnout a Thing of the Past

Voter suppression is alive and well and so is low voter turnout.  That's why we're impressed with what BlackHer subscriber Shennell McCloud, executive director of Project Ready, is doing in her community "to raise her children in a world where people of color are empowered to vote!"

Rosalind Brewer, chief operating officer and director of Starbucks, was appointed to the board of directors of Amazon this week. 

This is a BIG DEAL ladies!  

It's well-known that the tech sector is anything but diverse and inclusive and the NAACP and other civil rights organizations have been pushing the tech behemoths like Facebook, Google, and Amazon to do better.

Brewer, who was already one of the most successful Black female executives in the world, is only the 10th member of the Amazon board. 

It's our hope that she'll use her powerful platform to increase representation of Black folks at Amazon and beyond.

Speaking of Doing Better...

We're excited to finally read, Luvvie Ajayi's book, I'm Judging You: The Do-Better Manual.  

We LOVED her TED Talk.  In it, she reminds us that "comfort is overrated" and shares more about why she made it her mission to speak truth to power.
