As the world economy transitions to net-zero emissions, the economics of climate change offer important insights into key policy choices: How should we ensure this transition is efficient? How do we distribute its costs within society? How do we incentivize technological progress in climate adaptation and mitigation? What are the challenges for the transition created by geo-strategic fragmentation?

How can we tell stories that engage people on climate change in ways that other communications strategies do not?

The Yale Center for Environmental Communication invites you an event exploring how climate organizations are currently using storytelling in their work, the impacts of these stories, and lessons learned from other movements.

The discussion will be moderated by Sara Peach, Editor-in-Chief of Yale Climate Connections, with Antonieta Cadiz, Deputy Executive Director of Climate Power en Acción, Dominique Browning, co-founder and Director of Moms Clean Air Force, and Dr. Francesca Polletta, sociology professor at UC Irvine and author of It Was Like a Fever: Storytelling and Protest Politics.  [RSVP and learn more]

Miranda Mote – Botanical Autopsies: Plants and People
April 4 to May 2, 2024, with a public opening on April 11, Rome, Italy

Botanical Autopsies is a public exhibition of botanical prints by Miranda Mote, currently a 2024 Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, made with the plants of the Non-Catholic Cemetery for Foreigners in Rome. The prints will be displayed in the cemetery’s Autopsy Room.

This work in the exhibition contemplates aspects of the cemetery’s botanical and cultural history: eight plant species, the names of 1,895 people recorded in its burial records between 1716 and December 13, 1894, and the life of an African American woman buried in the cemetery.

Mote’s work with PPEH in 2021 supported her interest in addressing environmental injustice in Philadelphia and the establishment of Botanography, a nonprofit organization that directly serves students in schools of Philadelphia with arts-focused literacy and botany programming. [Learn more]

The next talk in the One Health series will feature Dipti Pitta (Mark Whittier and Lila Griswold Allam Associate Prof. of Nutrition) and Shelley Welton (Presidential Distinguished Prof. of Law and Energy Policy).

Each month, One Health presents talks and discussion with faculty from across Penn’s 12 Schools. Speakers present their work-in-progress on the theme of Climate and One Health. Faculty will each speak for 15 minutes followed by time for Q and A.

In fall 2024, students in the UPenn course "Environmental Humanities: Theory, Method, Practice" proposed a series of “Ecotopian Tools for the Academy.” Their ideas encompassed a variety of innovations aimed at building sustainable practices into the core operations of institutions of higher education.

UPenn Move-In Green Volunteer Proogram
Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis. Interested students are encouraged apply as soon as possible.
Move-In Green is one of the first opportunities for new students to learn about Penn Sustainability’s work and about how to recycle on campus.
