God calling someone's name twice in the Bible signifies that a significant moment is occurring, demanding the person’s full attention for a divine message, assignment or warning. Moses can definitely attest to this…
Moses was born to Israelite parents during a time when the Egyptian ruler had ordered all baby boys to be thrown into the Nile. Moses' mother hides him in a basket and he is found by Pharaoh's daughter.
He is raised in the palace, but knowing he is an Israelite, he has a heart of the mistreatment of his people. In an effort to defend an Israelite man, Moses killed an Egyptian and fled from Pharaoh’s punishment. Now he’s living as a shepherd for his father-in-law, out in the wilderness. One day, while tending the sheep, Moses sees a mysterious sight: a bush is on fire, yet not burning up. Then a voice calls out from the flames:
“Moses, Moses!”
Exodus 3:1-4 reads…Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush,“Moses! Moses!”And Moses said, “Here I am.”
It is the God of Moses’ ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And the Lord commissions Moses to lead the nation of Israel out of slavery. And we read in Exodus 3:1-10 just how God wants Moses to bring the nation of Israel out of slavery.
To God Be The Glory for Moses! While Moses was tending his flock, God called him from a burning bush to deliver the Israelites from Egypt!
