A Message from the Dean

Dear ,

Over the last few weeks I have been reflecting on 2 Corinthians 4:7-18, as I spoke about in our act of worship on Monday morning. As we anticipate a second National Lockdown coming into force tomorrow, this passage gives us a timely a reminder to "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." Paul shares an encouragement "do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day."

As a nation we are weary and fatigued. Our jars of clay are worn down, chipped and cracked. "But" Paul says, "we have this treasure within". The light that shines in the darkness dwells within us. The Power of Jesus Christ is sat in your chair. If we focus on the clay, it is easy to miss out on the glory contained within.

The Archbishops and Bishop of London, in a letter sent to clergy, have called for the Church of England to make this month of lockdown a month of prayer. To turn again to our faithful God whose steadfast love endures forever. Jesus is never more visible in us than when people can find no other reason for the hope we have.

I know that this second Lockdown will be harder than the first for many people for a number of reasons, but my prayer is that we can focus anew on the treasure, not the clay, and be beacons of light in a season of darkness.

Please see below for notices from the college, including an update and important information about the November residential weekend, teaching week and plans for Epiphany term teaching.

God Bless

Russell

I want to take this opportunity to thank the staff team who have been working incredibly hard as we continue to navigate the changing landscape in this season. As I'm sure many of you will be familiar with from your own contexts, they have made and re-made plans countless times over the last few months.  They have put together programmes for delivery and input only to have to start from scratch as new guidance is issued. We have been through multiple iterations of planning and detailed logistical arrangements for different scenarios to enable various forms of in-person gatherings. We are mindful of our moral and ethical duty to ensure the safety not only of staff and students but also our wider communities.

Be assured that we do not take decisions lightly and we will continue to work towards enabling in-person gatherings, locally and nationally, as soon as it is safe and feasible to do so. We are particularly keen that those students who have not yet had the opportunity to meet in person locally are able to do so as soon as is practically possible.

Residential Weekend

Friday 27 November - Sunday 29 November 2020

Since previous communication, the introduction of the government's three tier system and in recent days the National Lockdown 2.0 has meant a change in what we are able to deliver in person. The residential venues have had to cancel our booking  and therefore the November residential weekend will not go ahead for any students. This is hugely disappointing for all of us.

Teaching Week

Monday 30 November - Friday 4 December 2020

A reminder that all ordinands are required to attend teaching week input to access academic input which would have been delivered at residential weekends this term. (see this previously sent email for further information)

Timetables are now available on moodle in the Handbook under the Programme section.

Timetables have been published by teaching level as follows. Please ensure you select the correct timetable for your programme of study.

  • Level 4 - All Undergraduate Teaching
  • Level 5 - All Undergraduate Teaching
  • Level 6 -TMM Undergraduate Teaching
  • Level 6 - Youth Ministry Teaching
  • Level 7 - First Year TMM Postgraduate Teaching

Ordinands may engage with teaching either during the day or in the evening and may move between daytime and evening lectures depending on your schedule, however you must ensure you access all teaching relevant to your programme.

Epiphany Term Delivery Update

Following staff and student feedback and consultations, we have now finalised our plans for delivery of academic teaching in Epiphany (spring) term. As ever, all arrangements are subject to evolving guidelines. The criteria used to determine whether academic content may be delivered in-person are available on the Covid-19 FAQs section of the college website.

More detailed information about the planned delivery of Epiphany Term teaching is available on moodle in the handbook under Learning and Teaching or via the button below. Please read the document carefully Timetables will be available by mid-December.

Below is an overview of some of the headline decisions and actions.

  • Delivery mode for teaching: Whilst we will ensure online delivery of teaching is available throughout the term, we are setting the foundations for a return to face-to-face teaching when it is possible. This will likely vary by centre and depend on any regional or venue restrictions..
  • Lecture timings & Preparation: Teaching timetables are being amended to enable more time in lectures for discussion as well as time for a break from Zoom. Please read the document for these changes.
    • In order to do this, preparatory reading and preparatory work for lectures will be combined into one item of preparation. For full-time students, while there will be time set aside to review preparatory work after morning worship, this change will mean you will need to set aside time ahead of each of your teaching days to complete preparatory work for your lectures.
    • We will also be reintroducing Thursday evening teaching for Chelmsford centre students.
  • Residential Weekends: While it is not yet clear what will be possible for gathering at Residential Weekends in Epiphany term, we are asking all ordinands to protect the dates as scheduled. We hope we may be able to gather some students in person but this will be dependent on latest government guidance and restrictions.
    • 29-31 January 2021 - This weekend will have formational input only. An alternative online programme may be considered if we are unable to gather physically.
    • 5-7 March 2021 - this weekend includes required academic undergraduate teaching. Live teaching sessions will be delivered online if we are unable to gather physically. This means that ordinands will not be required to attend the spring undergraduate teaching week, with the exception of MA ordinands who will need  join the MA postgraduates on Monday 12th April 2021 for 7RR lectures in Teaching Week 2
    • As guidance is constantly evolving, we will communicate closer to the weekends regarding arrangements and any in-person or online provision. Please do not book any travel until instructed to do so.

Reporting Covid-19 Cases

As a higher education institution, we are required by the government to report the number of positive coronavirus cases within the college community on a regular basis.

If you receive a positive test result for Covid-19 please therefore inform tilly.bacon@stmellitus.ac.uk and copy your formation group tutor.

If your symptoms mean that you are unable to attend any college teaching or input, please also ensure you submit an absence request form (found on moodle) in the usual way.

The focus of the course is unpacking some of the big events in 2020 and exploring some of the theology behind it. It is only £20, 7-8pm, live on Zoom on the 5th, 12th, 19th November. International Ecumenical Placements 2021-22

As always at this time of year we invite applications from ordinands and TEIs for overseas ecumenical study placements for the 2021-22 academic year. These placements are important for the Church of England’s ecumenical relationships, as well as formative for the ordinands themselves. The deadline for applications in Friday 18th December (except for any applications for spending a semester at Bossey which need to come urgently now).

An ordinand currently undertaking one of these placements, at Les Dombes Institute in France, writes:

This placement offers a wonderful opportunity to live as part of a religious community and to enjoy the rich life of work, prayer and study that characterises the Chemin Neuf community specifically. The Community is highly international and the wide variety of the people who make it up is one of its beauties. The placement offers an opportunity to explore ecumenism (particularly in relation to Roman Catholicism), more recent expressions of monasticism, and mission (particularly to families and young people), alongside academic study. There is also space for peace and reflection. A warm welcome is guaranteed and pastoral and academic support is excellent. Everyone will work hard to make you feel at home, and you will quickly become a temporary sister or brother alongside those who make up the permanent Community.
