|
Welcome to the Summer 2022 edition of E-Síol. I hope you find the time to read it at this very busy time of the year. As always, it reflects the myriad of opportunities that are available to our students in Edmund Rice schools and the generosity of our teachers in giving their time to promote these activities.
It's heartening to read about the many activities that took place to mark the feast day of Blessed Edmund Rice. His spirit is very much alive in all our schools. As our Charter reminds us, ‘The hallmarks of an Edmund Rice school are care, especially for those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged in any way, and action for social and ecological justice.’
We wish our students who are sitting state examinations in June the very best of luck. School closures and illness have hampered preparations for the examinations, but school communities have displayed great determination and resilience and these qualities will help students to further success in the future.
Have a lovely Summer.

My Experiences in an Edmund Rice School |
|
|
|
Conor McNamara
My Name is Conor McNamara and I teach Religious Education, SPHE and CSPE at ArdScoil Ris Limerick.
This year, while taking part in the introduction program for new teachers in Edmund Rice Schools, I was inspired to share my experiences of education as a student and now as a teacher.
I was born in Romania in August 1989, alongside my twin brother Fergal to a Roma family in a small town about 40km west of the capital Bucharest. At the time Romania was a very different place from the country it is today. It was relatively poor and there was very little opportunity for the Roma population to advance in life or access education and gain employment.
In December 1989 Romanian revolutionists ended the Communist regime led by Nicolae Ceausescu. The world then became aware of the orphanages in Romania and the conditions that the children were living in.
I was adopted from an orphanage in 1990 alongside my twin brother, to my Irish parents, a Tipperary woman and a Limerick man.
We were very malnourished up until our adoption and had health issues but thrived in Ireland.
From an early age, my brother and I were immersed in traditional Irish culture, we both attended the local Gaelscoil, listened to Irish music and played Gaelic games, all of which have had a major impact on my life. When it came to choosing a Secondary School there was only ever one place I wanted to go to and that was the Abbey CBS in Tipperary Town. My father had attended Sexton Street CBS in Limerick as a boy, so attending a CBS was the obvious choice for my brother and me. My time at primary school was a happy one but I was not always confident in my academic abilities, it was not until I attended the Abbey school that I believe I truly blossomed and my talents were allowed to grow. My interest in the arts such as History, English and Religious Education was valued and fostered by my teachers and the school community as a whole. I did well academically and also represented my school in Hurling, Gaelic football and Rugby along with other school activities. While at school I was awarded the Tipperary Town Young Person of the Year award by the Lions Club for contributions in volunteering in the community. While at school we were always encouraged to engage in community projects, something that is a large aspect of the Edmund Rice Schools and its traditions
My physical appearance was different to my peers. My brother and I are dark in complexion and we have different features to the stereotypical Irish looking person.
From an early age, I was aware of the fact I was different but it was never a negative thing, in school my brother and I were never made to feel different or less Irish just because we were not born here. I always felt a great sense of belonging and place, at school, I was equal amongst my peer group. I could be myself and my individuality was respected and embraced. When you look different and have a different background to your peer group it can make you feel isolated but this was never the case for me at the Abbey. The school was a safe space for me to reach my full potential. In recent years I have made contact with my birth family and it has encouraged me to embrace my dual identity in modern Ireland.
Since the beginning of my teaching service at Ard Scoil Ris, I have seen all the attributes of an Edmund Rice School being carried out, values such as love, respect for one another and God are very much a part of the day to day running of the school. Ard Scoil Ris secondary school affords their students a place to develop academically, emotionally and spiritually and is a school that values a holistic approach to education in the tradition of Edmund Rice values. It is a place where all students are treated equally regardless of colour, race or creed. Each student is cared for and allowed to reach their full potential no matter their circumstance. In recognition of that fact, ArdScoil Ris along with other Edmund Rice schools is taking part in a multicultural week to highlight and acknowledge the diversity among the student population and staff as well as being part of a network of Global schools. I have been lucky to be involved in this project and it gives me great encouragement that Edmund Rice Schools are taking action in making students of all backgrounds feel welcome and valued.
When it came to choosing my career I always intended to become a teacher. I wanted to give back and share my joy for education with others. When I see young people of diverse backgrounds in front of me, I hope that when they see me they may aspire to be successful and even become a teacher. I feel it's important for all schools to have a diverse multicultural workforce as it stands as an example for students.
I can honestly say that my time in secondary school was some of the happiest days of my life and the fact it was an Edmund Rice school had a major part to play in that being the case, it most certainly was the reason I decided to take up teaching myself. School is where I feel most confident and inspired to be the best version of myself.
I would like to thank Leo Hogan, Billy Lynch and Eddie Burke, who encouraged me to share my story with the Edmund Rice Trust and its community. I would also like to thank my principal Tom Pendergast and senior management for allowing me to share my experiences teaching here at Ard Scoil Ris Limerick.

Retirement of Bill Doherty, DP
After 40 years of service and 6 years as a student in our school, our good friend and colleague Bill Doherty is retiring and bidding us a sad farewell. Bill was a student in the school from 1972 to 1978 and then returned as a teacher in 1982. He spent 30 years as a highly regarded teacher of History, English and C.S.P.E. and then the last 10 years of his career as Deputy Principal.
Thanks to his hard work, dedication and loyalty he is leaving us a thriving and vibrant school community providing an education which is based on the values of our founder Blessed Edmund Rice. He is also a very keen sportsman and has been very much involved in the promotion of hurling and athletics over the years in school.
He is a highly respected and regarded person among many generations of students and families in Waterford City and beyond. For Bill, working in Mount Sion C.B.S. was always a privilege as he faced each day with great passion, zest and enthusiasm for his job.
We will miss him dearly in our school. To quote from the fine immortal words of the Blasket Islands writer Tomás Ó Criomthain: “ Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís”.

Erasmus Trip to Brussels
Several of our senior students - accompanied by Ms. Leen, Ms. Heffernan and Mr. Foley - returned recently from a trip to Brussels funded by the Erasmus+ Programme. The boys met with our Spanish partner school and spent their time sightseeing in the city as well as visiting the European Parliament. They were also lucky enough to get to visit two further cities in Ghent and Bruges. They had an incredible time and thanks so much to the teachers for looking after them so well.

Retirement of Mr Paul Kelly, Deputy Principal
Paul Kelly has retired after 36 years of service in Midleton CBS. Paul joined the school staff in 1986 and taught History, Religion, Geography and English before being appointed as Deputy Principal in 2002. He has served the school in that capacity for the past 20 years including a period as Acting Principal.
Aside from his many official duties Paul has also worked tirelessly during his time in Midleton CBS to promote the ethos and values of the school through raising awareness and much needed funds to help people most in need. The most recent initiative in this regard is the CBS "Link with Lima" Immersion Project through which the school has funded the building of 5 new houses for poor families in Lima within the past year.
|
|
|
|
Paul has supported the India Immersion Programme and various Edmund Rice Outreach Projects including the Mary Rice and Ruben Centres in the slums of Nairobi. He also developed funding links through the Edmund Rice Development for Education project for centres in Cochabamba, Bolivia and in Lima, Peru.
He established the Midleton CBS Peace and Justice Group and supported their engagement with various advocacy, awareness and fundraising initiatives in partnership with the Edmund Rice Schools Trust, Edmund Rice International, Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders, Cork Penny Dinners, St Vincent de Paul, Cork Life Centre, The Simon Community and Trócaire.
|
|
|
|
For over 30 years he has organised the Cloyne Diocesan Youth Pilgrimage to Lourdes initiative within Midleton CBS. This supports students in their endeavours to raise the necessary funds and to act as Student Volunteer Helpers during the annual Cloyne Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes.
Paul is passionate about caring for those less fortunate in society and ensuring that Midleton CBS is a school with compassion and empathy among its core values. As a Sustainable Development Goals advocate Paul has also helped steer the school’s focus towards environmental awareness and concern and established the Midleton CBS Green Schools Committee. He has become involved in numerous initiatives to support environmental awareness and wellbeing within the school including the construction of the CBS Wellbeing Walkway in 2020.
Paul met his wife Máiréad in Midleton CBS and they have worked together throughout his career. Paul’s three sons, Declan, Michael and Andrew have all been educated in Midleton CBS and his daughter Róisín studies in St Mary’s High School.
Paul is a highly regarded and much respected member of our staff and everyone in the school would like to wish Paul the very best in his well deserved retirement.

Blessed Edmund Rice Day
To commemorate this very special day a prayer service was held to honour such an inspirational man and remember the work that he did during his lifetime. In our Religion classes, we looked back on the life and work of the Blessed Edmund Rice. We remember the massive contributions he made to education and the less fortunate. Celebrating this Feast Day allows our school community to reflect on our value of education and helps us to continue his mission by being faithful to Christ and following his example of inclusion and kindness.

‘Plant a Planet’ Project
An exciting ‘Plant a Planet’ project is underway at the Edmund Rice Secondary School with students from 1st, 2nd, and 5th year working together to source and sell young trees to plant to at least 10% of the school community. The Irish School Sustainability Network (ISSN), a group of schools who got together to do something constructive towards addressing climate change and environmental issues, initially founded this project. Students from the 4 schools involved in this project meet online once a month and students Kyle Dowley, (5thyear) and Zach O’Keeffe (2nd Year) represent Edmund Rice Secondary School in Carrick-on-Suir. The students are liaising with a local nursery, Orchardstown Nursery in Kilmeaden, who supply different species of trees to suit most gardens at a cost of 2 - 5 euro each and who will deliver batches of the saplings to the school on demand. Parents can order trees online or students can buy them at designated times on Wednesday and Friday mornings in the school. The trees can also be bought and donated to the school and will be then planted in the grounds. This ‘Plant a Planet’ project has been hugely successful and the Greenschools Committee students and teachers involved in promoting and organizing it are delighted with the response saying they have already exceeded the 10% target base.
|
|
|
|
The team is united and driven to raise awareness of the precious and essential role of trees in the protection and sustainability of the global environment to include oxygen production, carbon storing, reducing water run off preventing flash flooding and soil erosion, their provision of shade in hot climates, acting as windbreaks and indeed providing shelter and food for many wildlife species. The students at ERSS in Carrick-on-Suir have a wonderful insight into the effects and causes of climate change in the world today and are acutely aware of the devastating knock on effects globally caused by the widespread deforestation of the Amazon. In their efforts to promote the planting of trees locally they have printed out a list of trees for sale with photos which include Amelanchier, Spindle, Hazel, Birch, Alder, Crab Apple and Rowan/Mountain Ash, the height they will grow to, the size of gardens they are suited to and details of their value for wildlife. TY students have also made a video available on the school website, on how to plant and sustain the trees. Posters have been designed and painted by several students in art classes and they have been put up around the school and in local retail outlets promoting the sale of the trees and raising awareness of what they contribute to our environment. Students Zach and Kyle have also been aired on WLRFM talking about the project and the benefits of trees. The group plans to submit the ‘Plant a Planet’ project to the Young Environmentalist Award and will be organizing a Green Day and a bake sale in the school shortly with all funds raised going towards the green school project.

Edmund Rice Sensory Garden
As part of the Foróige leadership for life programme, students are encouraged to become actively involved in their communities and become inspiring leaders. With that in mind, our Transition Year Foróige group decided to make a sensory garden in the Edmund rice courtyard in our school.
It is being designed with all students in mind but particular thought and care has been invested into ensuring our students with sensory issues have a quiet and engaging space to spend time in and escape from all the chaos.
We have also put great effort into honouring Donal Walsh and his message of Live Life with this garden and this can be seen through our use of bright colours and some of his inspirational quotes painted on the walls. We hope that his words will allow students to appreciate creation through nature and deepen their faith.
This garden, when completed, will be a much needed and welcome addition to our school and we hope to see students use it as a place of peace and tranquillity as a way of honouring Donal Walsh and his message.

Achievements in the Gaisce President’s Award - Cian Heaslip.
Cian's Gaisce Journey
Cian Heaslip, is a third-year student here at CBS The Green. He began his Gaisce journey last September and is due to receive his Gaisce award before he leaves for the summer holidays! We are immensely proud of his commitment to the programme and very much look forward to presenting him with his award medal and certificate from the President of Ireland before the summer holidays commence!
Cian has a passion for baking and cooking; pizza. Homemade fish and chips and homemade chicken goujons; are up there among his favourite dishes to prepare. Every Thursday morning since September, the aroma of freshly cooked food has wafted along the corridors of the 1973 building. Cian chose to improve his cooking skills as his personal skill challenge for the award programme and boy are we glad! He fed many a third-year student over the course of the year, not to mention some hungry staff who always knew when the right time to ‘pop in’ and say hello was!!
Cian joined the workforce in a voluntary capacity also this year to fulfil the community involvement aspect of the award programme. Every Wednesday, accompanied by Ger Sheehy, he walked to the Down Syndrome Kerry Shop, to work in a voluntary capacity, helping on the shop floor.
The physical recreation side of the award programme was also well attended to as Cian chose to go to the Complex in his own time to use the pool and gym facilities. The final part of the award programme is completing an adventure journey which Cian is very excited about! He will accompany the second-year students on their trip to Ballyhas adventure centre on May 30th and then he will be awarded his medal to celebrate the fact that he has dreamt big and realised his potential.
So, what next……………….?
Cian will sign up for the silver Gaisce award programme in June and complete it over the summer months, as well as next year while a TY student. The word ‘gaisce’ means great achievement and I think you will agree his journey has been just that!
As his President’s Award leader, all I can say is this….. it has been such a pleasure to work with the funniest boy in The Green!

Student Enterprise
Enterprise is a vital part of our Transition Year programme and involves students working either individually or in groups as they come together to develop their own unique product or service.
This year we had great success in the Kerry Student Enterprise Competition with 'MJ Swaps' run by Kyle Clifford, Samuel Barrero, Gearoid O'Shea & Thomas Derege receiving the 'Green Environmental Award' at the County Final on the 25th March in the IT Tralee, Co. Kerry.
Their highly successful business idea centred on swapping, buying and selling sports jerseys in order to reduce prices for consumers, promote sustainability and reduce fast fashion.
Well done to all students who took part in the Student Enterprise Competition this year - we look forward to following your future entrepreneurial ventures !! |

Highlights from our celebrations of Edmund Rice feast day, 5th May 2022
After spending time reminding ourselves of the life of Edmund Rice, students were invited to reflect on the hope Edmund Rice brought to many people who were facing struggles in their lives. A small competition was offered to students to think of people who struggle in our world, then write a piece of prose or poetry to inspire hope in their lives. There were many great entries, and the prize went to Aaron Carberry, a 2nd Year student, who wrote a letter of hope to Ukrainian people who have arrived in Ireland after fleeing their country where war is raging.

Our Religion department prepared a sunflower with a reflection for each staff member as a little gift on the feast day of Edmund Rice. This gesture was intended to recognize how each colleague works towards supporting all aspects of our ERST charter, which focuses our individual efforts in the same direction to create a cohesive school community.
We are looking forward to seeing progress with our sunflowers in the coming months and hopefully share photos and stories of these when our academic year begins again in late August.

Mauro Martinez Perez is a Spanish student who joined St. Mary’s Academy CBS in September 2021 and is currently in 2nd
Year. He is very much enjoying his secondary school experience in Carlow. As we celebrated the feast day of Edmund Rice on 5th May by looking at his life and his legacy, we thought we would ask Mauro about his opinion of this Irish man of great faith. The following is what Mauro wrote:
I recently learned of Edmund Rice in Religion class, as well as in my school assembly. I listened to the words spoken about him, and researched a great deal about him, too. I understood the importance that Edmund Rice had in Carlow. I was pleased when I learned that people in his order opened a school for boys in Carlow. The characteristics Edmund Rice held are visible in my school, St. Mary’s Academy CBS. I see this daily. I am impressed at how Edmund Rice improved education in Ireland for boys by creating free schools for everyone to go to. I am keen to learn more about his life and I am inspired to live mine as he lived his, in a good way with good values. For me, he is an admirable Irish man.

Pat Meaney Award Winner: Patrick Walshe
The Pat Meaney award is chosen by the Third-Year cohort to recognise a peer who best embodies the intangible qualities that garner the respect and admiration of the group and what it means to be a CBS student. This year’s winner is exactly the type of student and young man who represents those qualities on a consistent basis. Pat Meaney Award winner for 2022 is Patrick Walshe, pictured below with Principal, Ms Lennon and Deputy Principal, Mr Kealy.

Darkness into Light
Darkness into Light is an annual event and fundraiser held, primarily, across the island of Ireland. Participants meet before dawn (4:15am) in May and walk, or run, 5km to meet the sunrise. The organisers of Darkness into Light aim to raise funds for Pieta, the suicide prevention charity.
This year, as a school community, we came together with our wider community in Carlow, to donate and participate in the walk.
We are proud to show our support to those in need of hope and connection, and we will continue to endeavour to bring darkness into light.

HELLO Campaign
The Mental Health Ireland “HELLO, How R U?” campaign aims to tackle the lack of connection or belonging that people experience by inspiring individuals to ask how others are feeling. This opens up a conversation to allow people to listen and encourage action by signposting to local supports and services. Paddy Walsh gave the following impression of participating in this campaign as a member of our Peace and Justice Committee in St. Mary’s Academy, CBS.
As I was handing out awareness bands, I felt a huge sense of pride in being a member of Peace and Justice and being chosen to do a job on behalf of Mental Health Ireland. I enjoyed wearing the yellow t-shirt in support of the HELLO campaign and handing out the leaflets and booklets to my classmates. It was also fun to have the opportunity to interact with other year groups, all while promoting awareness of minding your mental health. I was a bit more nervous visiting senior students’ classes during the day, but working together with another member of Peace and Justice gave me the confidence to do so. For me, personally, the 2nd Year and 6th Year students were more open to receiving awareness leaflets. It was interesting to see such different age groups take a keen interest in the matter of mental health. The teachers were really enthusiastic in raising awareness, too. This was especially good to see as they play a vital role in guiding and helping us during our time in school. It is comforting to know our school community support us and there will always be a listening ear if we ever need one.

Daffodil Day
In St. Mary’s Academy, CBS, the students and teachers work extremely hard to celebrate Daffodil Day with passion and care. It is an annual event celebrated on March 25th. Funds raised on the day go towards the development of life-changing cancer research as well as providing vital cancer support services to patients and their families, ensuring nobody must go through cancer alone.
This year, students in CBS Carlow’s advocacy group, Peace and Justice, held a phenomenally successful bake sale. Members were also given different jobs on the day, such as selling Daffodil Day pins, face painting and managing the bake sale. Both students and teachers collectively baked buns, cakes, and cookies to aid the event. Held during small break, members of the Peace and Justice committee worked hard through the hustle and bustle of the hungry students, managing to sell all their wares and satisfy every sweet tooth!
The school community raised €650 for the Irish Cancer Society during the bake sale, which we see as a remarkable success.

Creative Clusters
St Mary’s Academy, CBS, supported by the Schools Excellence Fund, is a proud participant in the 2022 Creative Clusters initiative to provide students with the opportunity to engage with arts, culture, and creativity in new ways. This programme aims to inspire and transform people, places, and communities through creativity.
Our Creative Cluster, in partnership with St. Leo’s College and Borris Vocational School, has begun its collaboration on the design and implementation of an innovative arts and creative learning project. A school-wide survey of students’ interests was conducted, with the areas of photography, LEGO construction, creative writing and micro-scale modeling emerging as expressive opportunities the students wish to pursue.
In April, all three schools launched their interschools Irish Poetry and English Creative Writing competition. The theme for this collaborative effort was “Together”. We look forward to reading the entries and enjoying the shared creativity of our students.

Golf Classic
In late April, thirty-two teams teed off to participate in St. Mary’s Academy, CBS Carlow’s long-awaited inaugural Golf Classic. This event was the first of its kind in our efforts to generate funds for a new Astroturf pitch, which will supplement the school’s upcoming new build.
Teams were comprised of students and staff members from past and present, as well as members of the wider community. The conditions on the day were perfect, as players enjoyed the wonderful course and facilities available at Carlow Golf Club. It was heartening to see the support extended to our school by our local community, and also to see grandparents of current students get involved alongside their grandsons to take part in the day. There were some fantastic displays of golf, mixed in with many loud shouts of ‘fore’, as teams hunted down some of the marvellous sponsored prizes on offer. The day was a momentous success, and we are already eagerly awaiting next year’s event!

School Retreats
The annual Fourth Year and Fifth Year Retreats were recommenced this year in March, after the Covid Pandemic of 2020 and 2021. Students from both year groups travelled to Redemptorist House, Blackrock for a full day of discussion, reflection, meditation, group activities and fun led by The SCALA (Redemptorist) Youth Ministry. The students were accompanied by members of The R.E Department. The opportunity to escape the pressured school environment and socialize in the unique and beautiful environs of Redemptorist House was greatly appreciated by all.
Blessed Edmund Rice Feast Day
Fr. Ben Hegarty O.P. and the R.E. Department celebrated Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Lower Glanmire Road, with our one hundred and fifty First Years, their class teachers, Deputy Principal Ms. A. Long and Principal Mr. D. Lordon. The Mass honoured the life of Blessed Edmund. Fr. Ben gave a very interesting and erudite sermon about Blessed Edmund and the Christian Brothers. He also spoke of the need for the CBC school community to live the values embodied by Blessed Edmund. Later in the day a reflection was delivered by the School Chaplain to the school community.

Annual Sports Day
On Thursday 5th May CBC held its first Sports Day in three years at the Mardyke Arena. This was organised capably by Mr. T. Crowe and The P.E. Department. A wonderful day of athletics, soccer and rugby was enjoyed in the glorious summer sunshine by the students. Contestants competed in several track and field events, including sprints, middle distance races, relays, long jump, high jump, and shotput. A provisional Tuck Shop run by Mr. Tony Wall and other teachers sold refreshments throughout the day. A sum of eleven hundred euro was raised and donated to ‘The Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation’. The day’s climax arrived at 4 p.m. with the annual Teachers v Sixth Year Students Soccer Match. The teachers won three goals to one, reminding the Sixth Years they still have much to learn!

First Year Poetry Competition
Our recent Poetry Competition inspired great interest from our first years. The final results were: winner -James Costello, second – Eoghan O Brien, third – Cathal Lyons. The winning entries were as follows:
SPRINGTIME 2022 by James Costello
When I went to Easter Sunday Mass in Clonakilty,
A Ukrainian child cried out for her Papa for the
Entire service.
Calves are separated from their mothers, children
Are separated from their fathers.
Grass shoots through the soil, bullets shoot through
The sky.
Buds burst from sleeping trees, explosions erupt in
The night’s sky, like fireworks.
Woodland flowers carpet the paths of hostile Russian
Soldiers. Apple blossom falls beneath the force of
Missile strikes.
A Lamb is born to be a symbol of hope, a child a sacrifice of war.
LOST IN NATURE by Cathal Lyons
Go with the flow as nature predicts
Living in harmony amongst the young animals
In the wild that exists.
Birds singing in the trees as wild blossoms sway,
In the wind the little darlings play away.
Searching, searching, searching for food, seeing the
Light of God’s way bringing light heartedness moods.
Fly, fly, fly away getting lost in Nature
As we all know this is God’s way.
THE SUN by Eoghan O Brien
When the sun goes down, where does it go?
Does it go to the theatre to see a great show?
Or does it take advantage of the quiet at night
for grocery shopping with no one in sight?
Or does it stay home and put up its feet,
After a long day of working, providing us heat?
After thinking this through, the only answer I see
the sun goes to shine a long way from me.

Speech made by TY Student
Dear principal, teachers, staff, our honoured guests and young colleagues. I would like to thank you all sincerely for gathering today to celebrate our past achievements when reflecting upon the incredible work conducted this Transition Year.
We, students, indeed have a lot to look back to; each group dedicating hour after hour to carefully plan how to effectively express and communicate the themes of history, inspired by Edmund Rice, social justice, leadership and, at last, action.
Gathering different ideas from diverging perspectives across our class, we have researched thoroughly each subject offering a fresh insight into the problems lying at the very core of our society, putting it all together into an inspirational project:
an action project, developed from the values promoted by the Edmund Rice Trust network, devised in line with the United Nations global sustainability framework, working towards a better tomorrow.
Our project does just this, through emphasising the importance of “0 Hunger '' sustainable development goal, resurfacing the importance of the 25h Article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights promoting equal access to “Good Health and Well Being”. Where the root problem behind poverty lies in discrimination and prejudice on both personal and systemic front, our project fights for social justice.
Our advocacy campaign, drafted with confidence, set to give a rise to an equitable world reflects the very words of Edmund Rice himself “Each Brother is an open letter from Christ, a message written not with ink but in the Spirit of the living God”.
And through cooking and delivering Christmas meals to those in greatest need, I am certain that this year’s holidays were very different for students, who cherishing all they have learned about moral responsibility, justice and leadership, applied the power they hold in their hands every day in their own communities. The power of love that we sometimes inhibit. The power of compassion that we all can embrace.
And so, with the greatest thanks to Cork Penny Dinners and Coláiste Éamann Rís, without which none of this could have been realised, I present you our project.

Celebrating the Feastday of Blessed Edmund Rice
School principal, Ciara Harte, initiated the idea of a sports day for Edmund Rice primary schools in Dublin. It hasn't taken place for the past two years but it resumed again on the Feast Day of Blessed Edmund Rice, 5th May.
Staff member, Oisín Breathnach, was the chief organiser and did a wonderful job.
Mickey McHugh from O'Connell Primary put together a video to capture some of the memories from the day. This can be seen in the news from 'O'Connell CBS Primary' later in this magazine. He also related a story about a Ukrainian pupil in his school who spotted two children from his village, who are pupils in St Laurence O'Toole's, at the sports day. He had no idea these children were in Dublin and all three had a very special day. Edmund Rice, no doubt, played a big part in bringing joy to these students.
The Sports Day was an outstanding success and the pupils and their teachers are grateful to Scoil Chiaráin for hosting the event.
The video below also shows pupils in Scoil Chiaráin celebrating Blessed Edmund's feast day. Well done to all involved in this very clever production.

Scoil Íosagáin Parent Book Club
Our Parents’ book club members have been reading a variety of books this year. There was a particular focus on the Irish crime novelist, Liz Nugent. All members thoroughly enjoyed her books ‘Lying in Wait’ and ‘Unravelling Oliver’ but they are definitely not for the faint of heart! We were lucky enough to have the author herself in with us in Scoil Íosagáin on 23rd March this year. There were plenty of questions, debates and discussions. She was so kind to sign some of our books and gave us insights to how she creates characters and develops her plots - very gripping reads! We thank Liz for giving her time to us and delving into her writing process, it was a fantastic meeting! The book club are now reading ‘The Maid’ by Nita Prose who has also sent us a video message that will feature on the school’s Instagram page. We look forward to more fantastic books next year!

Green Schools
We are delighted to say that Scoil Íosagáin has earned their sixth Green Flag for Global Citizenship Litter and Waste. All boys and staff worked tirelessly throughout the last two years to keep up with all our current flags and to learn about global goals and Fair Trade. For our day of action, the boys took part in National Clean Up Day. We went out in groups around the community collecting rubbish and recycling. Our motto for this flag was – “Do your part to make the world green. You only have one chance to keep it clean.” We also compiled a world map to where all our students are connected to. We couldn’t believe that we are connected to over 17 countries within our school community. |

The Return of Sports to the CBS
After an absence of two long years, regular sporting activities finally returned. It was clear over the past two years how important extra-curricular sporting activities are to the whole school. The days away from the classroom provide the perfect opportunity for both teachers and students to forge relationships and identities beyond the classroom.
It is these occasions that are so important to everyday school life. As always, the sporting year to date has brought with it the normal highs and lows. On the field of play success was achieved in the Under-14 A County Football Championship where the boys came out on top in a thrilling final against St Declan’s, Kilmacthomas. Unfortunately, our senior footballers were overcome in the Munster Senior C Football final by an extremely skilled CBS Ennistymon team. For many of our 6TH Year students this was their final game in a CBS jersey, but as always, they gave their all.
On the athletics front, the past weeks have seen CBS athletes to the fore with numerous County and Munster championships being picked up. The school looks forward to continued sporting activity in the forthcoming year and hopefully success will smile on our teams in 2022/2023.

Dungarvan CBS Award the Lift Flag
Dungarvan CBS was one of first 10 schools in the country to receive recognition from LIFT Ireland by being presented with a LIFT Flag for leadership. The LIFT programme supports students to develop their leadership values on an ongoing basis. The LIFT Flag is awarded to schools who have been working with LIFT to raise awareness of leadership values among their students.
Each student is a leader, whether that is within their family, schoolyard, sports’ teams, or with their friends. The flag recognises the school shares LIFT’s Vision, that by developing our personal leadership values, we can make Ireland a more equal, caring and positive society, now and in the future.
LIFT’s school leadership programme is delivered through regular round-table sessions, led by a student facilitator. Each session focuses on one of eight key leadership values, such as honesty, resilience, innovation, empathy, respect, and positive attitude. The programme supports participants to develop these leadership attributes on an ongoing basis. By giving young people these leadership skills early in life, they will take these values and practices with them as they move through life and through their careers.

SNIP Literacy Programme
Current studies are showing that Covid 19 is having an adverse influence on Literacy levels of students in Primary & Post Primary schools. To this end here in CBS Dungarvan SENCOs Ms Flannery & Ms Whelan implement a Literacy Programme with our first-year students with the support of the PE & Wellbeing Teachers Ms Corcoran & Mr Barry.
All first-year students were screened and assessed using the CAT4 and WRAT5 assessments. All students then completed the SNIP 1 Literacy Programme in conjunction with a TY mentoring programme & a paired reading initiative in conjunction with the Waterford Area Partnership & Waterford Libraries. All students were then assessed following this initiative and the literacy level scores in Word Reading, Spelling and Reading Comprehension increased for all students.
The hope then is to continue this success with incoming 1st years and the implementation of the SNIP 2 programme with 2nd years. |

6th
Year SOAR Workshop and Activity Day
In April, 6th year students took a well-deserved break from the books and took part in a SOAR Workshop and Team bonding activity day. The SOAR programme creates and delivers early intervention-preventative, wellness workshops for young people aged 12 to 18 years. The workshops empower young people to thrive, believe in themselves and fulfil their true potential. Within a safe and supportive environment, they are given the opportunity to be themselves and explore any challenges that hold them back from doing so.
The goal of the SOAR programme is to increase emotional well-being, strengthened resilience, improved levels of self-confidence, awareness, and self-belief, recognise their own unique strengths, an increased awareness of how to express their feelings, enhanced emotional and social skills and a greater awareness of what other young people are going through.
After this, the 6th Year students were treated to a day of fun and enjoyment where they took part in a sports day with a focus on having fun and working together. Points were awarded for lots of various aspects, e.g., coming 1st, teamwork, work rate, communication, encouragement, good team spirit.
It is well proven that physical activity positively contributes to positive mental health and wellbeing, and this tied in with the theme of the day. The students took part in activities such as potato and spoon race, long puck, piggyback races, tug of war and tag rugby. The students also were rewarded with a well-deserved ice cream. |

Dungarvan CBS Student Council 2021/2022
We were thrilled to have Billy Lynch from ERST visit the school to reinvigorate the Student Council. Billy offered great insights and encouragement to the students, and they were delighted to have made a connection with ERST that they can foster into the future. Student Council representatives were delighted to be involved in the various parent Meet and Greet nights as Dungarvan CBS opened its doors to the school community following Covid-19 restrictions.
The most wonderful success that the Student Council had this academic year was undoubtedly creating and running a Games Club in the school during lunch time. The Games Club started out as a one room club aimed at 1st Years but soon turned into a club for all year groups that has led to the concept expanding to two classrooms. The Games Club also allowed students to play teachers and gain some bragging rights. The Student Council has created a wonderful sense of community through this club and aims to develop and foster this moving forward.

Gaisce Bronze Award Adventure Trip
In May, our Dungarvan CBS TY Gaisce students headed to Clonmel to complete the “Adventure Journey”, part of their Bronze Gaisce Award. It was fantastic to have the assistance of Jake O’Donnell’s grandfather, Frank, who kindly transported the bikes using Garvan Cummins' Greenway Man Bike trailer.
The boys cycled along the River Suir from Clonmel to Carrick on Suir passing many historical monuments and wildlife. They kept their energy levels up through Dylan Joyce who had prepared delicious chocolate brownies which were devoured during a break in Kilsheelan. Following our break, we visited Ormond Castle in Carrick on Suir where we were treated to a fascinating tour of the 1565 Elizabethan Manor House.
Following lunch in Carrick on Suir, the group cycled back to Clonmel where they did a small grocery shop before travelling onto to Ballymacarbry hostel where the 12 TY Gaisce students stayed the night. Dinner was prepared by Eoin Power and Cormac Deevy who made a tasty spaghetti bolognese for all 14 people on the trip.
The following morning the culinary delights continued with Adam Daly, Jamie Mulcahy and Daniel Morrissey cooking delicious pancakes for everyone before the group returned to school to complete their Adventure Trip. |

Student Awards
The Dungarvan CBS school community was delighted to welcome back past pupil Dr. David King as the guest speaker at our recent Student Awards Ceremony. Dr. King completed his Leaving Certificate in 1997 and has since gone on to become a leading figure in the development of second level science subject specifications.
He currently works as Education Officer at the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. Dr. King has also come to national and international prominence as a children's author, with his book " A Hug for You", winning the Junior Children's Irish Book Award in 2021.
On the night David gave an inspirational address to the students on the possibilities that life offers, despite the challenges one may encounter. David also spoke fondly of his time in the CBS and acknowledged the various teachers that helped shape his future.
David concluded his speech with a very special request that students seize every opportunity afforded to them. He urged them to be the very best they can be, while advising that learning is a lifelong journey which provides many opportunities.

Creative Engagement
Saint Mary's CBS transformed their Courtyard area this year with a fantastic Mural which captures all aspects of school life.
The theme of the mural is Inclusion in our school community.
The school was successful in securing funding from Creative engagement Ireland and this allowed Waterford Walls to come and hold skills workshops with some of the Art students, who then helped in the creation of the mural.
We are delighted with this fabulous addition to our school.

Under-19 Soccer
Our U19 Soccer team had a very successful season this year winning the Dr. Tony O'Neill Senior Cup against Templeogue College becoming only the second Wexford team in 53 years to win the Competition.
They then progressed onto the All-Ireland semi-final against De La Salle Waterford as a result. Sadly, after a hard fought and passionate display after a penalty shootout they narrowly missed out on a place in the All-Ireland Final.
However they are looking forward to completing a league and Cup double in the coming weeks against their local rivals Wexford CBS.

World Water Day
World Water Day on March 22nd is an annual United Nations Observance, started in 1993, that celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2 billion people currently living without access to safe water. A core focus of World Water Day is to inspire action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
This year, the Green-Schools Committee at Saint Mary's CBS Enniscorthy have been working on the theme of Water and decided to organise a "Walk for Water" along the promenade in Enniscorthy on the day to raise funds. They managed to raise €440 with which they hope to sponsor a well to be fixed in South Sudan, through Trocaire. Many students wore blue to school for the occasion.
Some members of the Green-Schools Committee also took part in a national "Walk for Water" event in Glendalough National Park on Wednesday 23rd March, as organised by Green-Schools Ireland. Students walked 6 kilometres carrying water in their backpacks as a show of support for the millions of children around the world who must walk these distances each day to get the water they need to survive.
The 2021-22 school year marked a wonderful year for the committee who are eager to engage in environmental issues and take action by implementing more sustainable practices in their school community.

New Home
At Edmund Rice College exciting changes are happening. We are reaching the end of our time at Mill Road. A place that has provided lasting memories for all in our school community. Come September, we will have a new home. The new building and facilities situated near the Phoenix park are due to be ready in our next school year and there is unanimous excitement amongst everyone involved. We hope that this new home will provide us an opportunity to grow and create more fantastic memories for all our students and staff.
The last 5 years has been an eventful journey. Like you see in the picture above, our journey can be likened to the growth of a plant or tree. We are constantly growing and in our eyes, improving. Our time at Mill Road will be finished but the roots we have established in these 5 years is pivotal for the foreseeable growth and success that lies ahead.
Over the past few years we have prided ourselves in developing a closeness with one another. This has always been complimented with the private nature of the surroundings that Mill road gave us. It was an excellent place to nurture students in carrying out the foundations of our mission statement which is to foster a culture of Generosity and acceptance where each person has both the Faith and Courage to speak and act with Compassion. The roots founded here will stay with us for years to come.
‘Without the rain, nothing grows’
Like every school, there has been huge challenges in the last few years. It has been nothing different for us at Edmund Rice College and at Mill Road. Despite this, we have learned to become extremely adaptable against any challenges or setbacks faced. With reference to the quote above, we have certainly had our fair share of rain but without this, we wouldn’t have grown. No doubt we will continue to grow as we move forward in our school journey.
Ultimately , the next step is an extremely exciting one for our school. We will be sad to leave Mill Road but can’t wait to begin the next step. We would sincerely like to thank everyone for making Mill Road a huge part of our story. From the enthusiastic students to the hard working staff , to our supportive parents and wider community. You have all helped make Edmund Rice College a prosperous place.
One Journey's end is another beginning

Students from St. Joseph's, Fairview completed their internship all together in IBM in the six weeks before the Easter break. This internship experience was part of their work in the P-Tech pilot that is now finishing its fourth year since introduction. |
|
|
|
54 students from our school attended IBM each day over the term, all working on developing skills in computing, teamwork, project management, technology and enterprise. The culmination of this work was on the final day in which there was a Project Showcase in the IBM campus. Representatives of the Department of Education, government, and business partners were all in attendance; including a message from An Taoiseach Mícheál Martin. The commitment and work of IBM and the P-Tech community was instrumental in this enormous achievement for the students. They will now continue into 5th year of Leaving Certificate with the option of continuing P-Tech as a subject, culminating in a QQI Level 6 qualification.
We would like to thank Deirdre Kennedy and Yvonne Conaty of IBM for the effort and commitment they showed to our students over the 6 weeks. We would also like to welcome fellow ERST school O'Connell's to the P-Tech community as they begin with their first cohort from next year.

Our Children’s Unsung Heroes
CBS James Street secondary school was established in 1820 and is located in the vicinity of Dublin 8. It was traditionally an all-boys school but changed status to coeducation in 2016.
The school's mission is “to provide Catholic education in the Edmund Rice Tradition” and their vision is “In here we learn, in here we grow, from here we succeed”.
The school places as much emphasis on the pastoral side of the education provision as the academics. As such, students are actively encouraged to be part of the community by joining a sport team, arts and drama club or any relevant extra-curricular activities.

Niamh Kearney has been in the school since 2006, working as a Business and Maths teacher, but in 2009 she qualified as a Guidance Counsellor.
Students avail of Niamh's expertise through counselling and guidance in relation to college and career choices.
Covid created a lot of extra pressure on students and Guidance Counsellors, as well as other teachers, deserve great credit for the roles they have played in helping young people. We are very appreciative of the work they do.

Mentoring Programme
The 6th Year students have not only been studying consistently but looking forward to the world of business and work. They have had a very successful year with their Mentoring Programme partners Gifts Direct.ie and had their final session with a visit to their offices. As part of their Junior Achievement Ireland Programme and follow on from interview skills workshop, they had mock interviews in the Deloitte HQ and took part in an international video conferencing. Thanks to Business in the Community, additional skills are learned for future careers and studies.

The Student Council of CBS James's Street have been enjoying making their mark this year, especially when living out the context of the Charter. They chose to highlight the issues around Cystic Fibrosis after a very successful Disability Awareness week and Well Being Week. On Friday 8th April, the whole school participated in a 5km fun run and walk around Dublin 8. |
|
|
|
Many teachers and students chose to race the distance while others enjoyed the scenery at their own pace. Lots of fun was had by all, and it ended with a whole school Easter celebration in the lunchroom, along with prizes from the Home School Raffle. The student council would like to thank Principal Ms Queally, Deputy Ms Burke and Link Teacher Ms Hill, The Parent's Council, and all the students who helped raise €700 for Cystic Fibrosis.

Europe Day Celebrations
Bunscoil
McAuley Rice welcomed Minister Malcolm Noonan and Austrian Ambassador to
Ireland Dr. Thomas Nader as part of its Europe Day celebrations on Monday 9th
May.
Traditionally, Europe
Day is celebrated on 9th May each year to celebrate peace and unity throughout
the continent. In welcoming Ukrainian families into our community, it is more
important than ever to stress the importance of living and working together
peacefully.

It was
a most excellent visit that tied in with a project we are working on called the
Blue Star Programme. The Blue Star Programme
teaches primary school children about European cultures and the EU through
creative activities and projects that complement their national primary
curriculum. This month, all classes have been learning about European countries
in advance of Europe Day. VIP visits are a long-established tradition of the
Blue Star Programme where government representatives and ambassadors come to
schools and speak to students about their respective areas of expertise. Having
VIP visitors is a great way to showcase the pupils' work and knowledge and to
get them to learn about the EU in a practical, personal way.
In our school, we are
thrilled to be able to celebrate these special occasions once again.

Fundraising Soccer Blitz
A fundraising 5-a-side soccer blitz was held in March. A group of Transition Year students organised, planned, promoted and ran the event themselves and it was a great success.
In total, 13 teams took part and each team played a minimum of 7 matches. Each game was refereed by a TY student while Matthew White did a great job updating the scores and fixtures.
The winning team of the main Cup comprised Cian Merriman, Cillian Murphy, Jack Andrews, Niall Rian Doyle, Cillian Gamble and Christopher Harold. Their team won a dramatic final 3-2, with the winner coming from a Golden Goal from Chris, sparking jubilant scenes of celebrations in the Sports Hall.
The event raised 200e for Dogs Trust, Ireland’s largest dog welfare charity.

Seachtain na Gaeilge
Bhí a lán imeachtaí agus gníomhaíochtaí éagsúla ar siúl ar fud na scoile chun Seachtain na Gaeilge a cheilúradh i gColáiste Phádraig. Bhí comórtais postaeir, tráth na gceist, cluichí biongó, toraíocht taisce, searáidí, gearrscánnáin, drámaíocht, ról-imirt, díospóireachtaí agus amhráin Gaeilge ar siúl ins na ranganna Gaeilge agus bhí spraoi ag gach duine a ghlac páirt sna h-imeachtaí. Tráth na gCeist
Our 3rd yr quiz team took part in the virtual National Final (Craobh) of the Tráth na gCeist Boird Feachtas on Tuesday 8th March. The four students, Cillian Lawlor, Eoin McGarty (who were at this stage for the 3rd time), Tom Doran and Alex D’Alba, had qualified for the Craobh by finishing 2nd in the Dublin Regional Round that was held in October. This year saw the final once again streamed live on the Feachtas Utube channel to each of the 20 teams participating from schools throughout the country. Coláiste Phádraig had the youngest team taking part in the final with the majority of teams containing senior students from Irish medium schools, all competing for the prestigious Micheál Mac Gréil Perpetual Trophy.

BT Young Scientist
Well done to one of our 3rd yrs, Taha Farooqi, who was part of the team that won “Best Overall Group” at the BT Young Scientist Business Bootcamp held in UCD in March. The Bootcamp was established in 2010 by BT to give students the commercialisation skills they need to develop their BT Young Scientist and Technology project ideas into viable business ventures.
Taha was selected to take part in the four-day event from the pool of prize winners shortlisted for special awards, category winners and the top four award winners from this year’s Exhibition, held virtually in January. Taha worked on a project, selected by the BT YSE judges, with four other Bootcamp students and they worked collaboratively to develop the idea further, based on the workshops they took part in throughout the week.
On the final day, the group presented their ideas to an expert panel of judges, one of which was Shay Walsh, the Head of BT in Ireland. The judges evaluated the presentation from the point of view of “Headrite Sports” and they were clearly impressed as they won the award for “Best Overall Group”.
Congratulations Taha.

A GAA Cultural Day for all 1st and 2nd yr students was held in the school and it was a great success.
The students got to practice and improve the basic skills in numerous different sports and it was great to see good improvement throughout the day in these key skills. The huge participation levels in both Year Groups in every activity was fantastic to see.
The 1st

Open Evening
An Open evening was held in Coláiste Phádraig in May for the school’s incoming 1st Years and their parents/guardians. These students were denied the opportunity to see the school in recent years due to Covid regulations so this was the perfect chance for our soon-to-be new cohort of 1st yrs to familiarise themselves with the school, meet the staff and teachers, visit the classrooms and check out the fantastic array of modern, state-of-the-art facilities that they will soon get to enjoy.
|
|
|
|
It was great to see so many current students in attendance and they proved to be excellent ambassadors for the school as they spent time engaging the primary school students in the different subject areas and made sure they felt welcomed and valued. They answered a lot of questions about the school from parents and their children in a mature, positive and informed manner and helped them navigate the corridors and different classrooms on view.
Everyone at Coláiste Phádraig looks forward to welcoming the next cohort of 1st yr students into the school in September.

Thomas Meagher Foundation
Coláiste Phádraig participated in The Thomas Meagher Foundation Flag Day on Wednesday 16th March.
Four Transition Year students raised the Tricolour flag in front of the main entrance to the school whilst singing Amhrán na bhFiann with passion and pride.
The Foundation was set up to promote pride in and respect for the Irish flag and to educate people about its symbolism and meaning.
The main message the Foundation tries to promote is that the Tricolour flag symbolises peace and inclusivity

Soccer
Coláiste Phádraig’s 1st yr soccer team won the Leinster Shield after defeating Coláiste Chill Mhantáin 5-1 in the Final held on May 26th. The match was played on the immaculate, pristine grass pitch of Wayside Celtic in Kilternan with great views of the sea and the Dublin Mountains in the background and it was a fitting venue for Lucan’s best performance of the season.
Four goals from Ben Lawless and a stunning 30yrd strike from Alex Kennedy gave Lucan a deserved victory as they ran out emphatic winners on the day. It was a remarkable display of finishing from Ben who finished the campaign with 16 goals in just 8 games so he certainly justified the Sports Star of the Year Award that he won just three days earlier!

Athletics
2nd yr Alex Leonard produced one of the highlights of the school year by winning the gold medal in the 200m at the Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships held at Morton Stadium, Santry in May. Alex had qualified for the Leinster Final by winning the West Leinster title in tremendous style the previous month. Despite still recovering from a sprained ankle, Alex made a fast start and led at the 100m mark. He was overtaken briefly in the final straight but finished very strongly to regain the lead and power home to claim the gold medal and a place at the National Track and Field Championships held over the summer.
Alex is a tremendous athlete and actually missed his Sports Star of the Year award ceremony as he was away playing hurling for the Dublin u17 team so he is undoubtedly an exceptionally talented young sportsman with a bright future ahead of him

Graduation News
Our 107 6th
yr students celebrated their graduation on Thursday 26th May. The students first attended a mass in St. Mary’s Church, Lucan said by Fr. Curran before returning to the school where the Sports Hall filled up with over 400 people as parents, guardians, family, friends and staff gathered together one final time to bid farewell and wish good luck to the class of 2022.
6th
yrs Conor McDonagh and Alex Jaji gave moving Valedictory speeches as they both reminisced on their journey as a group through the school. Conor Devlin then made a presentation of wine and flowers to Ms. O’ Neill from the 6th
yrs in appreciation of her support, guidance, advice and kindness in her role as Year Head of the group.
The students were then called onto the stage with each graduate receiving a graduation cert, Yearbook, 6th yr photo as well as a set of cufflinks as mementoes of their time in Coláiste Phádraig.
As usual at these bittersweet occasions, there were mixed emotions for the students as they celebrated the end of their secondary education in the school. There was a sense of joy and celebration of their time in Coláiste Phádraig, tinged with a little sadness that is common to graduation ceremonies, as the realisation dawned on the students that they would soon be leaving behind a lot of friendships and happy memories as they prepared to complete their exams and move onto the next stage of their lives.
We wish them all the best for the future and assure them of a warm welcome whenever they feel like taking a trip down memory lane in Coláiste Phádraig.

Transition Year
The TY Graduation was held in the Sports Hall on Wednesday 25th May. It was wonderful to once again have a full in-person graduation ceremony for the students and their families and friends and it was brilliant evening of nostalgia, laughs, memories and celebration of a hugely successful and enjoyable Transition Year Programme.
TY co-ordinator Mr. Dunne opened the ceremony by listing the huge amount of activities and trips the students took part in throughout the year and praised them for taking ownership of some of the most successful school activities of the year such as the GAA Cultural Day, the Talent Show as well as numerous soccer blitzes.
The return to normal school activities this year was especially welcomed by the TY students and the initiative, leadership and team-work, key skills fostered by effective TY Programmes, that they displayed throughout the year greatly impressed staff and management alike. The ways the students developed and matured through self-directed learning activities and team-building exercises throughout the year was extremely uplifting. The students got to discover their own (sometimes hidden) talents, aptitudes and abilities whilst developing life-long interpersonal skills and competencies. They developed impressive personal qualities such as organisation, application, initiative, planning and fundraising skills as well as the ability to work in a team and relate well with each other.
Well done to the students on so fully embracing the spirit of Transition Year.

Visit to UCC
6th class visited UCC recently. They had a fantastic time exploring the campus and setting themselves on a path to university. By becoming more familiar with the college it makes progression to third level education less daunting, and more attainable. The visit coincided with the completion of the Professor Fluffy programme, which raises awareness of how third level education can positively improve career and life opportunities.

Hurling
Due to the pandemic the school hadn’t competed in any hurling, or football, competitions since 2019. To celebrate our first home game, the lads had a brand new set of jerseys. They got two wins and put in a solid showing in their other games. It was great to continue the school’s hurling tradition, and give a new generation of students the memory of donning the blue and white jersey.
|
|
|
|
On a warm and sunny 13th of May, the school competed in a 7 a side hurling competition. The competition was in remembrance of former pupil Paul O’Connor and took place on our home pitch. The competition was open to mostly 5th class pupils, but some 4th class boys made up the panel as well. There were over twenty teams from a host of local schools, and the Mon got to the final where they lost out to Gaelscoil Uí Ríordáin’s A team. The boys were very strong in all six of their games, but the last game was a step too far. A gallant effort by the boys, who should be very proud of themselves.
The school was also very proud of another former pupil, Patrick Horgan, who became the all time hurling championship record scorer in Cork’s win over Waterford.

Feast Day of Blessed Edmund
We celebrated the feast of Blessed Edmund Rice across the school and our first year students recited the blessed Edmund Rice prayer while attending a special assembly to celebrate the feast. They also learned about the ground breaking work of Edmund Rice, and the impact this has had on the lives of so many. The students then wrote their gratitude notes and these were placed in a gratitude box. The first years then went on a trip to Airtastic to continue celebrating the feast day.

Coffee Morning
We held a parent coffee morning to welcome the newest members to our school community and it gave the opportunity for the families of our newest students from the Ukraine to meet the various members of our school community: students, staff, and parents. Our LCA 1 students presented their Ukrainian peers with One for All vouchers which they had fundraised for as part of their enterprise task. It was a very welcome event and highlighted the school’s commitment to promoting partnership while displaying Christian spirituality and Gospel based values which are evident throughout our school.

210th Anniversary
This school year we celebrated our 210th Anniversary. In the spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice and following the principles of the Edmund Rice Charter of promoting partnership, excelling in teaching and learning, creating a caring community and inspiring transformational leadership, a number of our teachers secured a grant from the Department of Education & Science as part of the School Excellence Fund. The project being led by our school involves collaboration with two of our feeder schools, North Monastery Primary School and Blarney Street CBS, by sharing numeracy methodologies, to improve student attitudes towards maths and prepare them for Junior Cycle. It will be run over three years. A substantial grant from the Department of Education was approved to enable the three schools to invest in maths equipment and chrome books. North Monastery teacher, Christine Coleman, one of the drivers of the project said that “We are all DEIS schools which means delivering equality of opportunity in schools. We want the best for our students. It is exciting. The aim of the project is to bridge the gap between primary and secondary maths in preparation for the Junior Cycle”.

In keeping with the values of Blessed Edmund Rice, our school community joined forces with the Polish school community to collect items for people in the Ukraine. The appeal for donations received a huge response from both the local community and the Polish community.

We are very proud of all the students involved in this multi-day event. Many of the competitors are in junior cycle, so we hope to see many more years of success ahead of us with this winning team.

Musical
March saw one of the most anticipated dates in the Oatlands College school calendar - the Transition Year musical. This year, we collaborated with local girls' school, Rockford Manor, and made an outstanding comeback to an in-person performance after the previous years' online performances. The production was Grease and ran for four nights in March, to packed theatres.
The performances were incredible from every student who participated. We saw skilled acting, unbelievable singing including some memorable solo performances, plenty of comedic moments and the students showed us some moves that we never knew they had.
The musical has contributed greatly to the development of students in Transition Year, building their self-confidence and self-belief. Who knows where this may lead for some of the students?
Huge thanks must be given to the tireless efforts of the staff who put so much work into the musical. In particular, great credit is due to David Enright, Deon Kelly, Alison Cosgrave, Emily Hogarty, Adam McDonagh and Grainne Kennedy. |

Celebrating Edmund Rice Feast Day
We celebrated Edmund Rice Feast Day in honour of our founder Blessed Edmund Rice. All students learned about the life of Blessed Edmund Rice in Religious Education class. Students learned how passionate Edmund Rice was about education and his vision for education and young people.

|
|
The 6th year students held a meaningful ceremony to commemorate Edmund Rices' life. The sixth year students brought in a globe to represent the Brothers of Edmund Rice who are working in 30 countries across five continents. The date 1802 represents the first school that Edmund Rice opened in Waterford 1802. The chain links represent Edmund Rice's apprenticeship in 1779 as a Ship Chandler providing supplies and equipment for ships across the Atlantic. The Bible represents his love for religion. The Love sign represents his love for education and educating youth. The ornament of the man and woman represents his love for his family and wife Mary who died tragically. In addition to this ceremony, the religion department decorated the corridors with information about our founder Blessed Edmund Rice. Every year we celebrate the Edmund Rice Feast Day on May 5th. |

Waterpark’s Got Talent
Well done to the 11 finalists who competed in the College Talent competition held in our P.E.hall. The stage looked super and students from 1st
– 4th years were entertained by a fabulous line-up that included everything from the diverse talents of Eoin Fitzgerald and his keepie uppies to contemporary ballet by Leah Dunphy. There were jazzy performances from the Mernin Brothers, Caoimhe Keohane was one of the three pianists, Henry Avery and Grace Kelliher, who took the light fantastic.
Emily Flynn impressed many with her version of Ring of Fire and was accompanied on guitar by her close friend Hannah Kelly. Caoimhe Power and Lana Dowling sang a moving duet called Dancing On My Own. Caoimhe O’ Shea and Ella O’ Keeffe donned their hard shoes for a powerful performance while Conor Butler treated us to a lovely piece on his guitar.
Aidan O’ Halloran, Eoin Bailey and Mac Mbu performed their own composition called “G24 Interlude” on guitar , mandolin and cajon (a type of drum box).
There is no overall winner in the Talent Show which means it’s a show that is run in a lovely spirit of sharing the talents! Well done to Ms. Corcoran and Ms. Beglin who got this up and going and have left us with so many fabulous memories.

TY’S visit Barcelona written by the 4.4’s
A group of 74 Waterpark TY’s enjoyed 4 days away in Barcelona, just after Easter. The itinerary was action packed with a variety of activities to suit all tastes.
Following a heavy first day’s travelling, the tour group was glad to touch down in Catalunya. Xavi, a local tour guide and nice guy met the Waterparkers and spoke about the city and its history. They travelled around the city, seeing what Barcelona was all about and taking in Gaudi’s infamous Sagrada Familia.
Next up was a trip to Camp Nou, home to F.C. Barca which is such a popular tourist destination and students made the most of the club shop. Later that evening, the group checked into their hotel in the coastal town of Salou.
Day 2 was an early start to explore the coastline of Salou by bike. This was followed by a very competitive game of beach football, which was won by “The Skins”, followed by some well-deserved ice cold callipos! The tour continued its merry way to the Picasso Museum, which was a glimpse into some of the artist’s work. The REAL highlight of the night was the Real Madrid V Man City match which they watched in the company of some local fans.
Port Aventura was where Day 3 was spent. This is the biggest theme park in Europe where many brave Waterpark souls challenged rides like Red Force (the Ferrari Rollercoaster), Shambala which is about 264 ft. and the formidable Dragon Khan. The day’s end was spent poolside, and many enjoyed the games room at the hotel.
The final day was an early start for all as the day ahead was hectic. Up first was a trip to the Cosmo Caixa Science Museum. Some of the best parts were the Terrarium which was an impressive Aquarium/Jungle exhibition. The nonstop tour whizzed on for a cable car trip up Mont Juic which was a super way to take in the last stunning vistas of the city. This allowed just enough time for the final shopping trip near the Port of Barcelona for last minute souvenirs and keepsakes. The group said “adéu” to the city and flew home.
Thanks to Mr. Quillinan, TY Year Head for making these great memories for us and the accompanying teachers, Ms. Corcoran, Mr. O’ Brien, Ms. Dennehy, Mr. Kavanagh, Ms. O’ Brien and Ms. Fanning.
We wish you all a great Summer and look forward to getting back together next year.

Multicultural Week 2022
In March we had a wonderful week of celebrating the different cultures within our school. The School of Sanctuary committee and the Edmund Rice Advocacy group joined forces to organise a number of displays and guest speakers to help our school continue to be inclusive. We celebrated the 27 different nationalities and some 14 languages within our school community. We had the pleasure of welcoming Homayoon Shirzad of School of Sanctuary Ireland to speak to our first years via zoom. He spoke about his experience of leaving Afghanistan and what other refugees experience. We had wonderful displays all week by the students on Language, Clothing, Religion and a special display for international women’s day. Well done to all involved for an amazing week.

U14 Football Rockwell County Blitz
Our U14 footballers enjoyed a great day out at the county blitz on May 18th. It was a really well organised day by Tipperary GAA in Rockwell college. The school entered 3 teams into the competition. The A team qualified for the final against a strong Thurles CBS side. They battled really well but lost out to a great Thurles team. The B team made the final also with a last gasp win in their final group game. They faced Comeragh College in the final who were too strong in the end. It was a fantastic achievement to reach both finals. The C team performed well throughout the day and were unlucky not to reach the final. It was great to have over 40 students involved on the day.

The Spring and Summer months bring a wonderfully positive atmosphere to our school, especially in a very pressurised year, where we are now finally back to relative 'normality' in Ireland, with the relaxation of the covid rules. We are now able to do many more interactive events together, and classes and pods can now do tasks together too. We thank God for these blessings.

We reflect, during this time, on those less fortunate, and our prayers are continually with the people of the Ukraine. We have been busy both with our Ocean themed Aistear topic, and with sports day preparation. Keeping in Touch with Nature
Is there anything more wholesome than interacting with nature, especially in Spring/Summer when seeds are planted and begin to grow?
Our pupils love planting, watering and maintaining our garden. Mr Benson and our wonderful caretaker, Geoff, have been overseeing our work with the raised beds.
We raise awareness about the climate crisis and the need for biodivversity as well as learning the basics of gardening.
We all need to live more sustainable lives.

Abbey Inside Out Community Crime and Disability Awareness Project 2022
Our school first became involved with “Inside Out” during the inaugural phase of the programme in 2020-2021. Four of our current 5th Year students together with students from St. Anne's and St. Ailbe's worked with Anne Bradsahaw (HSE Disability Services) and Inspector Des Bell (An Garda Síochána) primarily on learning about how crime affects people with disabilities in our community. They worked on developing the publication "Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover". Such was the success of their work; they were nominated for a Garda Youth Award in Tipperary which progressed to being awarded at National Level. We were privileged to work on and develop the legacy which they left us in further promoting awareness around crime and disability in our community. We educated ourselves on the area firstly before sharing this knowledge with our peers in school. We learned so much from Anne, Des, Fr Beaty (School Chaplain) and more recently Katie (McCormack, Bedford Row Family Project, Limerick) when she visited our school in March. Katie invited us to Limerick on May 16th to present our research and findings and to essentially train members of her team on what we did. We aim to hand our project over to TY 2022-2023 students in our school and train them up on how to keep this great crime and disability awareness project running and even augment it in the year ahead. Coincidentally one of the team from the Bedford Row Family Project has a son who attends another Edmund Rice School and would like for him and his peers to become involved next year. She is currently collaborating with the school on this. Our goal is to expand our research and share with other schools to improve this project and strengthen awareness. Any school who may be interested in getting involved should contact our school link teacher, Mr. Conor Hayes on conor.hayes@abbeyschool.ie

Gairdín
Tá gairdín álainn síochánta tógtha ag an ngarraíodóir Paul Flynn do Choláiste Íosagáin agus do Choláiste Eoin mar chuid de chomóradh 50 bliain Choláiste Íosagáin. Tá dearadh spéisiúil ag baint leis an ngairdín – is dearadh ciorclach é a bhfuil ceithre chuid ann, a léiríonn na ceithre shéasúr. Tá siombalachas tábhachtach ag baint leis seo. Beidh bláthanna agus plandaí difriúla faoi bhláth i rith na ceithre shéasúr. Cuimhneachán síoraí a bheidh sa ghairdín. Spreagfaidh sé muid i rith na bliana chun smaoineamh ar na daoine atá imithe ar shlí na fírinne, go háirithe dóibh siúd a raibh baint acu le Coláiste Íosagáin agus le Coláiste Eoin. An aidhm atá againn ná go mbeidh an gairdín mar áit chiúin shíochánta go bhféadfadh daltaí agus múinteoirí dul ann agus a bheith ag cuimhneamh ar na daoine seo atá imithe romhainn. Is comhartha ómóis é an gairdín dóibh siúd.

Obair charthanachta
Mar scoil Chaitliceach, déanaimid iarracht luachanna an tSoiscéil a chur chun cinn i gcónaí. Nuair a bhris an scéal go raibh ionsaí déanta ag an Rúis ar an Úcráin, bhí uafás orainn i gColáiste Íosagáin, mar aon leis an domhan ar fad. Agus muid ag smaoineamh ar luachanna an tSoiscéil, ach go háirithe cabhair a thabhairt dóibh siúd atá leochaileach agus in am a ngátair, bheartaíomar a bheith gníomhach agus ár gcuid a dhéanamh. Bhí ár ndaltaí scoile an-ghnóthach ag eagrú agus ag pacáil earraí riachtanacha le cúnamh a thabhairt do mhuintir na hÚcráine agus le tacaíocht a thabhairt dár gcomhghleacaí, Yevhen, arbh as an Úcráin dó. Smaoinímid agus guímid ar son mhuintir na hÚcráine go laethúil agus tá súil againn go dtiocfaidh deireadh leis an gcogadh uafásach seo go luath.

Chuireamar tús le Seachtain na Folláine ar scoil i dtreo dheireadh na scoilbhliana. An aidhm a bhain leis seo ná scileanna a mhúineadh do scoláirí le strus agus brú an tsaoil a laghdú agus tábhacht na folláine a chur chun cinn. Chuireamar tús le Seachtain na Folláine le ceolchoirm scoile idir Coláiste Íosagáin agus Coláiste Eoin. ‘An Picnic Leictreach’ a bhí air agus ghlac daltaí ó bhliainghrúpaí éagsúla páirt sa cheolchoirm iontach seo. Is bealach maith é an ceol le strus a laghdú agus folláine a chur chun cinn. Chomh maith leis sin, eagraíodh céilí le daltaí 2-5 agus b’éacht den scoth a bhí i gceist leis seo. Bhain na daltaí an-taitneamh as damhsaí nua a fhoghlaim agus cairdeas a fhorbairt leis na bliainghrúpaí éagsúla. Is bealach iontach í an aclaíocht le strus a laghdú agus folláine a chur chun cinn. Le deireadh a chur le Seachtain na Folláine, tháinig Bl. & 6 le chéile (mar chairde speisialta) agus ghlac siad páirt i gcluichí biongó. Bhí an-spraoi agus spórt acu agus is bealach iontach é teacht le chéile le cairde, strus a laghdú agus folláine a chur chun cinn. Tá súil againn go gcuireann na daltaí an scil seo i bhfeidhm amach anseo agus iad ag tabhairt aire dá bhfolláine.

Transformational Leadership in Nagle Rice Secondary School
TY students in Nagle Rice Secondary School, Doneraile, Co Cork, inspired by the ERST charter have compiled a list of songs and instrumentals resulting in a beautifully produced C.D. Cross-curricular subjects such as Art, Creative Writing and Music were essential throughout this creative journey. All music can be heard by purchasing this CD at a cost of €5 with all proceeds going towards the worthy cause that is Focus Ireland.
Students have worked in partnership with their teachers, staff, parents and Focus Ireland throughout this enlightening process and have excelled in both teaching and learning throughout this experience. They have shone light on a pressing issue prevalent in our society and have promoted a caring school environment as a result. Students have inspired our wider school community in their fundraising activities and their leadership is truly transformational.
|
|
|
|
Simultaneously, students created a music video that is available to view on our social media pages. It serves to portray the life and isolation of homelessness whilst providing relevant information on how we can help this worthy cause and furthermore access their services if and when required.
Well done to our TY students & their teachers who continue to show the ‘good seed growing in their hearts’. As a school community we celebrated the Feast of Blessed Edmund Rice and used this opportunity to share this TY project across our school in order to raise awareness of social justice and human rights. Inspired by Pope Francis’ words “You are called to care for creation”, we have no doubt that Nagle Rice is committed to answering this call.

The students from the four schools came together in collective action to address climate change and the loss of nature. Their aim, which they achieved, was to get 10% of staff and students in our schools to plant a tree in their own garden. They wanted students to get active in their own homes and reimagine their own garden spaces and have climate and nature conversations with their own families.
They taught students in their schools how to plant a tree and provided information on what native trees are good to plant in small, medium and large gardens. They raised awareness in their schools and wider community that planting a tree is good for addressing climate change, improving biodiversity, helping with improving soil and alleviating flooding, as well as improving our own wellbeing.
They also ran a school-wide information campaign involving posters, public address announcements, workshops, lessons, parent emails and surveys. They wrote articles in local newspapers, ran a climate and nature conversation series on a local radio station and connected with local businesses and community groups.
This was a great achievement and it is wonderful to see friendships forming between students in different schools.
Well done to Ardscoil na Mara and ERSS Carrick on Suir. We hope more schools will join ISSN in the coming year. |

Microsoft Office Specialist
Congratulations to Transition Year student, Kristers Melnis, on reaching the Microsoft Office Specialist UK and Ireland Championship.
Kristers was one of just 25 students chosen across Ireland and the UK based on his Microsoft Office testing scores. He scored 86% in his exam on the day. What an excellent result at such a high standard!
Kristers is pictured here with Billie Breen, the Irish manager of Prodigy Learning and Dr. Kevin Marshall, Head of Microsoft Education Ireland. He had a fantastic day, working with Minecraft and Microbit Workshops as well as receiving a tour of Microsoft One Headquarters Ireland.
Congratulations Kristers on this achievement.
