Elverhøj is honoring Solvang's founding in 1911 and its 110th anniversary using the theme “Skål Solvang – Celebrating 110 Years of History & Culture.” Today we reflect back on a highlight of the town's 2011 centennial.

Solvang Welcomes Danish Royalty

June 11, 2011

Over the decades, Solvang has enthusiastically welcomed visits by Danish dignitaries and members of the Royal Family. A highlight of the 2011 Solvang Centennial took place on June 11 when Henrik, His Royal Highness The Prince Consort of Denmark was the guest of honor at a celebration marking the town's 100th anniversary.

Residents and visitors alike welcomed HRH and the Danish dignitaries gathered for a day of celebration and festivities.

The visit marked the city’s Centennial and re-affirmed the historic, cultural, and business ties between Denmark and Solvang, the “Danish Capital of America.”

Accompanying His Royal Highness was Peter Taksoe-Jensen, Denmark's Ambassador to the United States; Torsten Jansen, Minister Counselor Culture and Public Diplomacy at the Royal Danish Embassy; and an entourage of officials from both the Palace in Denmark and the Royal Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C.

A royal birthday cake was served to the Prince in honor of his birthday which was the day as his visit.

An large crowd greeted HRH, Prince Henrik upon his arrival at Solvang Park. A walking tour of downtown was followed by a small, private reception at Elverhøj.

The Prince cut the ribbon at a dedication ceremony opening the newly constructed Centennial Plaza on Alisal Road.

The Plaza is a little-known public space at the edge of the parking lot. Next time you visit, see if you can spot the brick paver honoring this occasion.

The day of festivities ended with a Royal Dinner Celebration under a clear canopy in a local vineyard on land that was part of the original acreage purchased by the town's founders in 1911. There was toasting, singing, speeches and a birthday gift for HRH  a new handcrafted cowboy hat.

Solvang Welcomes Danish Royalty Over the Decades

Past royal visits have been marked by community celebration and enthusiasm.

In 1939 Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Ingrid (later King Frederik IX of Denmark and Queen Ingrid, 1947-1972) came to Solvang. In 1960, Princess Margrethe visited Solvang. She attended a reception at Palacio del Rio and later toured downtown Solvang. In 1976, she returned as Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, accompanied by her husband HRH Prince Consort Henrik.
