Newsletter: October 2020

"Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells..

To Autumn by John Keats

 'John Keats Selected Poems'.

We are finally into the last quarter of 2020, and hurtling at pace towards the Christmas season. As we venture from Autumn into Winter, we thought it would be a good opportunity to remind you that we have a great news articles section of our website, where we endeavour to keep you up-to-date with new books and events of interest, and that will hopefully point you in the direction of some great reading material as the nights draw in.

Over the past few weeks we have featured an interview with Alan Pickering, a former government pensions advisor and a Calibre member, and a book review of Mill on The Floss by another member, and author, Lynne Reid Banks. The Alan Pickering Interview is also available as a podcast.

Both National Poetry Day and Banned Books Week fell in the first week of this month, and we have featured articles on both subjects, with some recommendations for books to read if you enjoy poetry or reading books deemed controversial in some parts of the world! And of course here at Calibre we are pleased to support Black History Month so keep your eye out for a forthcoming article that will reference some amazing books in our library by BAME authors.

Calibre Member Survey

As we briefly mentioned last month, we now have a member survey live on our website. The aim is to help us understand how well we're doing, and where improvements can be made. If you could spare 10 minutes to help us we would really appreciate it. All questions are optional and any feedback you give will be very welcome.

Fundraising News

We are pleased to announce a new Fundraising News section on our website. Here you will find details of any fundraising activities we are running and ways you can help us raise money. With Christmas on the horizon, we have a few ways you can help us fundraise as you go about your normal Christmas preparations:

Christmas Cards: Please get in touch early if you would like to buy some as we expect to run out. You can see what’s available on our website shop.

Online shopping: If you usually shop on Amazon, please consider using which is their charitable website and where you can choose Calibre as your favourite charity. Amazon will donate to us as you shop at no additional cost to you.  You can also sign up to Easy Fundraising, where you can do your online shopping as normal and if your retailer is one of over 4,000 who are in the scheme, the retailer will make a small donation to your chosen charity as a thank you.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge – your donation will make double the impact!

If you do wish to make a gift to us at Christmas, the Big Give Christmas Challenge is the perfect opportunity and we are delighted to be one of the charities chosen to take part. The Challenge runs from 1-8 December and is open to online donations through the Big Give website only. We have already partnered with several organisations who have agreed to match donations. More details can be found here and please keep an eye out on our website for further details as we near December.
