An attempted robbery has been reported aboard a Cargo Vessel while anchored at Luanda anchorage, Angola on 19th April 2023, at 01:30 UTC.
One robber gained access to the vessel by climbing the anchor chain and through the hawse pipe while another waited on a small boat. The duty watchman noticed the perpetrator and mustered the crew. Upon seeing the alerted crew, the robber jumped into the water and escaped in the small boat with their accomplice. The Master has confirmed that all crew are safe, and nothing has been reported as stolen.
ANALYSIS: This is the second incident in Angolan ports this year, with the first reported incident in Soyo, Angola, in March. In 2022, 7 reported incidents out of 43 in the region took place in Angola, all at anchorage, between either Soyo or Luanda Anchorage.
The form of robbery between all of these incidents remains the same, wherein robbers attempt to access through anchor chains or by boarding smaller crew/OSV/tug/barge vessels, steal ship properties, then depart on small vessels.
However, attacks within the region this year have increased from Winter, with most being robberies at anchorage and reported incidents at sea being suspicious approaches, hijacking, or attacks.
