Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Moses and Miriam Praise God”
Aim: Explore
why
and how Moses and Miriam praised God;
Reflect
on
actions of God that are celebrated through music, dance, and words;
and Celebrate
God’s
faithfulness with joy.
Background: Exodus
14:1 – 15:1-21
Bible Lesson:
Exodus
15:11-21
Memory
Verses:
“Who
[is] like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who [is] like thee,
glorious in holiness, fearful [in] praises, doing wonders?” Exodus
15:11 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
Moses
was
famously chosen by God to lead the Hebrew people out of Egypt after
more than 400 years of bondage. Miriam is the sister of Aaron and
Moses. She is the loving watchful older sister who encouraged
Pharaoh’s
daughter to allow
her mother to
serve
as nursemaid for
her
own son, Moses. This providential
event occurred
after baby Moses was taken from a little water
tight basket
floating in the Nile
River
where he was being hidden from the annihilation of the Hebrew boys
as ordered by
Pharaoh.
-
Our
study passage
has the backdrop of the Hebrew people being freed from Egyptian
bondage after more than 400 years. This freedom was brought about
after
ten terrible plagues were
suffered
by the Egyptians with the last plague being the visit of the Death
Angel to every household who did not have blood on the doorpost as
commanded by God. After their
Exodus
from Egypt, the Hebrew people crossed the Red Sea on dry land
provided by God as the Egyptian army hotly pursued them. They
watched the Egyptian army drown in the same Red Sea that they had
crossed earlier on dry ground.
-
Because
of God’s
fore
mentioned mighty works, in Exodus Chapter 15, Moses along with
Miriam, his sister and the Hebrew people
lifted
their
voices in a song of praise to the Lord. Our passage under
consideration,
begins in verse 11 which asks the question of who can be compared
with the God of the Hebrew people, the one and
only
true living God. He is majestic in His holiness, awesome in His
Glory, and performs many works
of wonders.
God
intervened
in time to rescue the Hebrew people from the pursuing Egyptian army
and drowned them in the Red Sea. Not only did He rescued them or as
the text states redeemed them, but God lovingly led and guided
them with mighty works to a Promised Land that He had
prepared for them.
-
The
people of the nations on the route
to the Promised Land heard
of the mighty acts that God had
performed enabling
the
Exodus and travels of the Hebrew people. The reports caused fear and
trembling in
the hearts of
the Palestinians who resided in the land adjacent to Canaan.
Likewise south
of Canaan, the
Edomites (modern day southern Jordan) descendants of
Esau,
Jacob’s brother were terrified. Also
to the north of Canaan, the Moabites (modern day central Jordan)
descendants of Moab, Lot’s son were disturbed by the reports of
God’s mighty works on behalf of the Hebrew people. In other words,
the entire region was well aware that The
God of the Hebrew people
was
mighty and was moving on their behalf. Just as God parted the Red
Sea, He would remove all
those who would attempt to block passage of the Hebrew people on
their journey to Canaan. God’s plan for the Hebrew people would be
fulfilled as promised to Abram. The
Lord reigns for ever and ever.
-
In
Exodus 15:19-21, the description of God’s deliverance of the
Hebrew people at the Red Sea is rehearsed in more detail. Pharaoh's
horses, chariots, and horsemen followed the Hebrew people into the
Red Sea in hot pursuit expecting to overtake them; however, God
brought the water back over them and they drowned in the same area
where the Hebrew people crossed on dry ground. Miriam and all the
women with tambourines sang and danced celebrating this great
deliverance. They
repeated
the reframe of Exodus 15:1 “Sing to the Lord, for he is highly
exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea.” It
should be no surprise that the Hebrew people would express exuberant
praise and gratitude for their God’s provision and protection as
exhibited in their release from Egyptian bondage and the parting of
the Red Sea to deliver them from the mighty Egyptian army, who were
swallowed up in the waters.
Take
Aways:
-
Our God is worthy to be
praised for He has miraculously delivered us from a path to a
burning Hell to those who
accept His Son, Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
-
If we look back over our
lives, we can witness that God has parted some Red Seas (brought us
through some situations which seemed impossible, but God …)
-
Music is a form of worship
that allows us to raise our voices to God in praise and thanksgiving
for His Goodness and Mercy!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“And
when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of
Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and
praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had
seen; Saying, Blessed [be] the King that cometh in the name of the
Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. And some of the
Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy
disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if
these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”
Luke 19:37-40 KJV
“Sing
unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance
of his holiness. Psalms 30:4 KJV
“Praise
ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for [he is] good: for his
mercy [endureth] for ever.” Psalms
106:1 KJV
“Know
ye that the LORD he [is] God: [it is] he [that] hath made us, and not
we ourselves; [we are] his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, [and] into his courts with
praise: be thankful unto him, [and] bless his name. For the LORD [is]
good; his mercy [is] everlasting; and his truth [endureth] to all
generations.” Psalms
100:3-5 KJV
“I
will bless the LORD at all times: his praise [shall] continually [be]
in my mouth.” Psalms
34:1 KJV]
“And
he hath put a new song in my mouth, [even] praise unto our God: many
shall see [it], and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.” Psalms
40:3 KJV
