Danish Days Memories

A source of pride since Solvang’s earliest days, folk dancing and musical entertainment have long been a part of the town’s culture and are always highlights of the  Danish Days festivities

This is the fourth and final installment in a 3-day series of Danish Days memories marking what was to have been the 84th annual Danish Days. Today we celebrate the Solvang traditions of folk dancing and music with history, photographs and video.

Traditional Danish folk dancing was incredibly popular in Solvang’s early years and was a way of defining Danish culture and identity. Danish folk dancing incorporates spirit and humor, and takes practice. Atterdag College students and instructors participated in public folk dance demonstrations throughout Southern California, wearing a mix of traditional Danish folk dress and Danish-American lace-up costumes.

In Solvang, the love of dance and music helps to keep alive a proud Danish heritage in the hearts of many second and third generation Danish-Americans.

In the 1960s, Danish Days included performances by the Danish Choir, a popular group of talented local singers and musicians.
