Highlights from the Clusters meet Regions event in Lyon, France (12-13 October 2023)
The theme of industry of the future took center stage in Lyon, highlighting the transformative power of clusters. With over 60 participants from various countries and sectors, the event became a crucible for innovative ideas.
🌟 Key takeaways: ✅ Deep insights into the innovative process of the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. ✅ Engaging pitching sessions as part of the renowned Pollutec International exhibition. ✅Concrete demonstrations of how clusters, SMEs and public/regional governments can collaborate successfully.

A new call for applications to host upcoming 'Clusters meet Regions' events in 2024 will open soon! It will be addressed to local & regional authorities, innovation agencies, cluster organisations, business network organisations and other small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) intermediaries. Highlights from the EU-South Africa Matchmaking Event (24-26 October 2023)
🌟 Key facts and figures:
✅ This was the first time that the European Commission has organised such an event in Sub-Saharan Africa.
✅ We managed to facilitate 88 bilateral meetings, not including those held at the trade fair Manufacturing Indaba.
✅ The delegation was composed of 14 Clusters and 4 SMEs from Bulgaria, Romania, Portugal, France, Serbia, Poland, Hungary and Finland, plus 17 South African organisations.

Strengthening the sustainability of agriculture is essential for remaining competitive. It has significant implications for social and economic development. To this end, this C2Lab, organised in Vilnius, Lithuania on 14-15 November, is strongly driven by the challenges of the agri-food ecosystem.

Highlights from C2Lab event in Ljubljana/Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia (25-26 October 2023)
This event had a special focus on the Danube Region, its innovation potential and the funding mechanisms available to EU public and private stakeholders. Our participants gathered in working groups to discuss and frame their project ideas. They built on their expertise and interests to determine joint objectives and actions on sustainable plastics, recycling, materials, skills and construction.

The recent EU Clusters Talk, organised as part of this year’s European Week of Regions and Cities on 12 October 2023, delved into Europe's green & digital transition and explored the vital role of clusters in regional transformation.
🌟Key takeaways:
✅ Wolfgang Münch, Head of Unit Italy & Malta (DG REGIO), focused on EU funding opportunities. He particularly highlighted the Smart Specialisation Strategies, allocated €34.5bn until 2027.
✅ Marek Przeor, Team Leader at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW), discussed collaboration in the EU economy, noting that clusters, with over 1,500 organisations registered on the European Cluster Collaboration Platform, are pivotal in leading the green shift.
✅ Riikka Tanskanen, Project Manager at Regional Council of Lapland, showcased the crucial role clusters have played in Finland's innovation approach since 2019, emphasising a collaborative over an individualistic approach.
✅ Kristina Šermukšnytė-Alešiūnienė, Cluster Manager, AgriFood Lithuania, underscored the versatility of clusters as hubs, accelerators and connectors for various stakeholders. Overall, she highlighted their essential role in regional development.

📊 Did you know that Lithuania has more registered clusters on the ECCP than Latvia and Estonia combined?
Check out the other 56 country factsheets that the ECCP has developed, covering Europe & third-priority countries' cluster programmes and policies. The country factsheets are created via desk research on the national level (mainly using the national language) and are then validated by the national authorities. Check them out here.

TECHTERA, a cluster in the South-east/central region of France, has been called the ‘leader of the textile ecosystem’. With its flexible management style, TECHTERA has made itself integral to the textile industry by linking universities, industries, and government to ensure effective progress. Over the past 17 years, this cluster has been facilitating the green & digital transition in the textiles industry and building resilience within the sector. Its ever-increasing membership base drives research & innovation projects, helping to strengthen industrial & technological sovereignty in the region. You can find various good practices from all over Europe in the Cluster Solutions Library, where clusters have played an active role in regional economies and the 14 industrial ecosystems (as indicated in the updated EU industrial strategy). They are drivers for economic transition, in line with the EU industrial strategy of green & digital transition and resilience building.
