Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Philip
and the Ethiopian Eunuch”
Aim:
Explain the
connection between Philip’s sharing of the Gospel and
its universal availability;
Reflect
on our
openness to people who differ from us;
and Develop
strategies
to make our churches more open and inclusive.
Background:
Acts 8:26-39
Bible
Lesson:
Acts
8:26-39
“And
as they went on [their] way, they came unto a certain water: and the
eunuch said, See, [here is] water; what doth hinder me to be
baptized?” Acts
8:36 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Book of Acts is the second New Testament Book (the Gospel According
to Luke being the first) authored by the physician Luke under the
inspiration of God. Its title is sometimes referred to as the “Acts
of the Holy Spirit.” Acts recounts how early followers of Jesus
Christ led by the Holy Spirit spread the Gospel far beyond the
confines of Jewish life to the whole world. In Acts Chapter 6, Luke
describes the rapid growth of Christianity. As with most growth
there are growing pains, here the diversity of believers spanned
Jews who spoke Aramaic and those who spoke Hebrew. The early saints
shared their resources with each others. The widows were a group
that was specifically cared for. The Greek speaking saints
complained that their widows were neglected in favor of the Hebrew
speaking widows. There is not proof of this disparity presented,
but never the less the complaint is made. The apostles assembled
the saints to address the matter. Their solution was to have those
assembled to select seven men of a good reputation, full of the Holy
Spirit who exhibited wisdom and to assign them the responsibility of
distributing food and other resources to the widows. Meanwhile, the
apostles would devote their time and efforts in prayer and teaching
God’s Word. This solution was embraced by all and seven men were
selected. (“Everyone liked this idea, and they chose
the following: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit),
Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch
(an earlier convert to the Jewish faith Act 6:5 NLT).
The apostles set these men, who were of the Greek speaking Jews,
apart with prayer and by the laying on of hands and appointed them
to their task of service; however, only
two of the seven are mentioned further in scripture, Stephen and
Philip. Our lesson today again
highlights the evangelistic
efforts of Philip as he is
sensitive and obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
-
Acts
8:26-29,
Philip
Obeys the Spirit:
After
much success in sharing the Gospel in Samaria, an angel of the Lord
bid Philip to leave Jerusalem and to travel south toward Gaza, which
was a desert area. Philip did not offer excuses or question the
directions,
he just obeyed
the command and
started
on his way. We
next see that on the same road a man of Ethiopia, a man of color had
come to Jerusalem to worship. This man
was
a eunuch who had
the resonsibility
of managing the finances of the Queen
of Ethiopia, Candace. This Ethiopian eunuch had stopped his chariot
by the side of the road and was reading aloud a passage written by
the prophet Isaiah. The Spirit of the Lord directed Philip to go
close to the Ethiopian’s chariot and to join him. Again Philip
did not offer any resistance to the Spirit’s urging to approach a
man of another nationality. He faithfully
obeyed
the leading of the Spirit.
- Acts
8:29-
35,
Philip
Witnesses in the Spirit:
Philip
did not just walk over to the chariot. He ran. Philip heard the
eunuch reading from the prophet Isaiah and asked whether he
understood what he was reading. The Ethiopian eunuch responded
honestly with “How can I understand
unless someone provides
guidance or assistance. He
invited Philip to join him in the chariot. This invitation was an
opportunity for Philip to share the Gospel.
The scripture being read was Isaiah
53:7-8
“He
was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he
is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her
shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from
prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for
he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression
of my people was he stricken.” The
eunuch asked Philip of whom was Isaiah speaking in this passage.
Philip began with that very scripture to explain that the prophet
was speaking of Jesus and further shared more of the gospel with
him. In other words, with the aid of the Holy Spirit, Philip
witnessed to the eunuch the goodness of the Lord and the need for
salvation.
-
Acts
8:36-
39,
The
Ethiopian Confesses Christ:
As
Philip and the eunuch road along in the chariot while Philip
preached
the gospel, they came to a body of water. Evidently, Philip’s
sharing included the essence of Romans
10:9 KJV “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord
Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him
from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” and
of
Matthew 28:19 KJV “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Ghost:” The
eunuch pointed out
that
here is some
water,
and
asked “what
hinders me from being baptized?” Philip asked do you believe what
I have
being
sharing with you with all
your
heart. The eunuch answered that he believed that Jesus Christ is the
Son of God. With the eunuch’s answer, the chariot was stopped and
Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water and Philip
baptized him.
Upon coming up
out
of the water, the Spirit translated Philip out of the presence of
the eunuch. The
eunuch
continued on his journey rejoicing in the God of his salvation. He
was now a citizen of the Kingdom of God. I am sure that Philip’s
prayer was that the eunuch would share the Gospel with others that
he encountered on his way!
Take
Aways:
-
Christians
must continually and prayerfully listen for and be obedient to
the
leading of the Holy Spirit.
-
Christians
must always be
prepared to share the Gospel with all that we encounter in our daily
lives.
-
Christians
must be inclusive in our demonstration of love for our fellow man.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“The
steps of a [good] man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in
his way.” Psalm
37:23 KJV
“But
sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and [be] ready always to [give]
an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is
in you with meekness and fear:” 1 Peter
3:15 KJV
“But
now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy,
filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another,
seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put
on the new [man], which is renewed in knowledge after the image of
him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew,
circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond [nor]
free: but Christ [is] all, and in all.” Colossians
3:8-11 KJV
“[There
is] one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of
your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father
of all, who [is] above all, and through all, and in you all.”
Ephesians
4:4-6 KJV
“Go
ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am
with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew
28:19-20
KJV
