I came across this advice column in Inc. about an admin who is "bad at this job" and the advice was so surface-level I couldn't let it slide.
The "workplace and management" expert's advice just didn't go deep enough. In our latest blog, Missing the Mark: Why Your Admin Hire Failed and What to Do Instead I break down what everyone was missing.
The real issues nobody addressed:
- They never understood what they were actually hiring for
- Completely overlooked the sophisticated skills required to handle the role (cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence, strategic thinking)
- Hired for "personality" instead of capabilities
- Missed the business impact of administrative professionals entirely
- Underestimating the role and skills required to perform it
This situation was totally preventable, and fixable, when people understand what admins and assistants actually do and why it matters strategically.
I walked through how this should have been handled from job descriptions to proper training.
