Recipes by Melissa Blease
4 Salad Dressings
Classic Vinaigrette
Shake 6 tbsp peppery, extra virgin olive oil with 2 tbsp red or white wine vinegar, 2 tsp Dijon mustard, 1 small garlic clove (peeled and grated) and a pinch of caster sugar in a large, clean jam jar. Season to taste and serve with all classic salad combinations, drizzled over warm griddled leeks or asparagus, or use as a base for quick dips, mixed with plain yoghurt, soured cream or cottage cheese. Store sealed and refrigerated for up to 4 weeks.
Blue Cheese Dressing |
In a small tub, mash 2 heaped tbsp strongly-flavoured soft blue cheese (eg. Roquefort or Gorgonzola) with 2 tbsp mayonnaise (low fat is fine) and 2 tbsp thick, Greek-style natural yoghurt. Add a squeeze of lemon juice and serve with robust salad leaves such as endive or chicory, celery sticks, sliced apples and/or pears and walnuts... or with fried chicken for a classic American combo. Store sealed and refrigerated for up to 1 week.

Balsamic Dressing |

Shake 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil with 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar, a pinch of salt and a smattering of freshly ground black pepper in a large, clean jam jar. Add dried basil or/and dried oregano to taste and drizzle liberally over Italian-style salads or roasted Mediterranean vegetables, or serve with warm Focaccia or Ciabatta, for dipping. Store sealed and refrigerated for up to 4 weeks.

Creamy Tahini |
In a small tub, loosen 3 tbsp tahini with 1 tbsp low-fat, natural yoghurt, the juice of half a lemon and a splash of water. Season to taste (a sprinkling of Sumac or Za'atar is good here, if you happen to have any to hand) and serve with hearty pulse/grain-based salads, griddled halloumi and/or griddled roast vegetables, or as a side to accompany middle eastern dishes such as koftas, falafel or griddled aubergines. FAMILY FUN | A VOYAGE OF TASTE
SS Great Britain: Dishes of Discovery, 23 July – 4 September |
Embark on a global voyage of taste without leaving Bristol this summer at Brunel’s SS Great Britain with ‘Dishes of Discovery’.
Brunel’s SS Great Britain is inviting visitors to ‘Taste the World’ this summer, as it offers the chance to sample delicacies inspired by Victorian voyages to destinations visited by the ship in the 18th century.
Visitors will taste historic recipes from Mumbai, Cape Town and Crimea – discovering how the world’s first great ocean liner connected people and places around the world.
The dishes have been created by Bristol-based social enterprise, Travelling Kitchen, whose team worked with the ship’s archivists to explore historic recipes from around the globe. They include a zingy melon and ginger jam from Cape Town, traditional Borsch from Crimea and a tropical green coriander and coconut chutney from Mumbai – and are typical of those that passengers would have encountered as they disembarked in the faraway destinations.
Tickets to the culinary experience are available at the SS Great Britain website: ssgreatbritain.org. For further updates, Follow the SS Great Britain at @ssgreatbritain on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

TALK | A LITTLE-KNOWN LEADER
'BRLSI: Roman Britain's Pirate King (and Somerset connection)', 25 July
An upcoming talk from the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution examines the dramatic story of a little-known leader in mid-3rd century AD Britain who challenged the might of Rome and established a new North Sea kingdom.
In 2010, a huge hoard of Roman coins was unearthed in a field near Frome, Somerset. More than 750 turned out to have been minted during the reign of the ruler in question: Marcus Aurelius Carausius.
In this talk, author and historian Simon Elliott describes the spectacular rise and bloody fall of this fascinating late-Roman figure and shows how his legacy can still be acknowledged today.
This hybrid event will take place on Monday 25 July, 7.30pm-9pm at 16 Queen Square, Bath BA1 2HN – as well as online.
Visit brlsi.org/whatson for more information and to book your tickets.

LOOKING BACK | TREE-LINED AVENUES
Words by Andrew Swift |
Great Pulteney Street |
Anyone walking along Great Pulteney Street earlier this week, as the sun was beating down, might have been forgiven, despite the monumentality of its architecture, for wishing that a few trees had been planted to cast a bit of shade – and do their bit for our climate emergency. As the first of this week’s archive photos shows, trees did once line the street, while the walls of many of its houses were covered with creeper. Both trees and creeper have long gone, restoring the street to its original condition, some idea of which is given by the second photograph, taken in 1870s before the trees were planted. You’ll also notice that the spot in the middle of Laura Place, now graced by a fountain, is empty – but that’s another story, which will feature in next week’s newsletter.

PODCAST | A MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE
New podcast: 'Investigating the Post Office Scandal' |
Following on from the publication of The Great Post Office Trial, Nick Wallis has launched the Investigating the Post Office Scandal podcast alongside Rebecca Thomson: the journalist who broke the story in 2009.
The podcast will investigate unanswered questions about the scandal, which saw over 700 former sub-postmasters and postal workers prosecuted for theft and false accounting using faulty IT evidence from the Horizon accounting system between 2000 and 2014. Over 70 convictions have been overturned so far, with the scandal described as the greatest miscarriage of justice in UK history.
The pair will also cover the ongoing public inquiry once hearings resume in September, with the goal of charting developments and speaking to those involved. "There are so many questions still to be answered, and we hope to cover the inquiry regularly and speak to those who know the story inside out," says Thomson. "We want to explore the potential long-term implications, talk about new angles to the story, and ensure each stage of the inquiry process is talked about as widely as possible."
Nick Wallis has covered the story since 2011 and published The Great Post Office Trial in 2021. Rebecca Thomson broke the story while a reporter at Computer Weekly in 2009. Listen to the Podcast on podcasts.apple.com and buy The Great Post Office Trial from bathpublishing.com
