Bristol to mark Remembrance Day this weekend
Sunday 10 November will see military personnel and civic dignitaries take part in Bristol’s annual day of remembrance.
Members of the public are welcome to watch and attend both the service and parade, which will be led by 39 Signal Regiment. The parade will feature military units, cadet contingents, veterans and related groups, who will assemble on college green, and march to the cenotaph at approximately 10.20am.
The service will begin at 11am with a two-minute silence, which will be marked and concluded by gun fire, and will be followed by the placing of wreaths in a short service and the national anthem.
"We hope that the residents of Bristol will join us to remember the sacrifices of those in world wars, and other conflict," says Councillor Andrew Varney, Lord Mayor of Bristol. "It is important that Bristol always unites as a city and pays respects to those we’ve lost."

The latest edition of The Bristol Magazine has embraced some of the city's rebellious spirit...
Bristolians are known to some as rebels with big hearts who choose to speak up, act out and aren't afraid to live a little differently. And we've fully embraced this approach to life in our November issue, including an exclusive chat with Carol Vorderman about her new book on politics, and a visit to Rockaway Park where a community of artists, punks and those seeking an alternative way of life are hard at work trying to improve the world for other people too.
But even rebels need a safe place to unwind, and we've got just the thing in our interiors feature, which shows you how to create the cosiest nooks at home in which to see out the winter months. Plus all our regular, luxurious lifestyle features and plenty more!
15,000 copies are delivered door to door, and you can pick up a copy at many places around town – including our stands at Waitrose, John Lewis and Harvey Nichols.

Speedy Spicy Bean Hotpot
Recipe by Melissa Blease
You know those cold, murky evenings when you’ve got no idea what to have for supper and you can’t face a trip to the shops? This is the moment when tinned sweetcorn, tinned beans, frozen jacket wedges and mature Cheddar cheese are your best friends. Turn the oven on, raid the freezer and storecupboard and prepare for a feast!
If you haven’t got mixed beans in chilli sauce to hand, use kidney, cannellini or even baked beans instead, and add a good pinch of smoked paprika (or dried chilli flakes) to the frozen peppers.
Ingredients (serves 4) 375g pack frozen mixed peppers 1 x 325g tin sweetcorn, drained 2 x 420g tins mixed beans in mild chilli sauce 400g frozen jacket wedges (the lightly spiced kind work really well here) 100g mature Cheddar cheese, grated
Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180c/gas mark 6. Stir-fry the peppers in a little vegetable oil over a medium heat for 1-2 minutes, add the mixed beans and drained sweetcorn and cook, stirring occasionally, for 4-5 minutes until heated through.
2. Tip the bean mixture into a large baking dish, top with a layer of frozen wedges and scatter with cheese.
3. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the wedges are crisp and the cheese has melted, and serve with coleslaw or a well-dressed mixed salad.

NEW RESTAURANT | CREAM OF THE CROP

The Newt’s newest eatery officially opens
Though the latest dining destination from the team behind The Newt in Somerset has been serving food since the summer, The Creamery – located alongside the Castle Cary rail station platform – officially opened last week (1 Nov) with the unveiling of a plaque by Lord Hendy, Minister of State for UK Rail.
The Creamery is a working dairy with restaurant and farm shop, located less than 10 minutes’ drive from The Newt, housed in Castle Cary’s original milk factory – where in 1912 local farmers would deliver churns of milk to be made into cheese, ready for transport to London via the railway line.
The historic building, which has been lovingly restored over four years by The Newt to celebrate the Golden Age of railway travel, now acts as a community hub, serving travellers boarding or alighting trains from London Paddington and the West Country. Visitors can expect hearty dishes, grab-and-go snacks, and a range of traditional soft cheese and yoghurt using fresh milk from the estate’s herd of water buffalo.
"We are delighted to have officially launched The Creamery at Castle Cary railway station today, and in such special way – joined by the HM Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Mr Mohammed Saddiq and Lord Hendy [pictured below]," says Andrew Foulkes, CEO of Hospitality at The Newt in Somerset. "The opening signifies much more than a restaurant and farm shop but our committed supporting the community and we’re thrilled to create a space where both locals and visitors can come to enjoy the best of what our region has to offer".
The Creamery is around an hour’s drive from Bristol, and is also served by direct trains from Bristol Temple Meads station.

MAGAZINE KIOSK | MAGALLERIA

Curated by Daniel McCabe
HEIST-OUT is a new wristwatch magazine from Geneva-based watch fanatics Maxime Couturier and Lorenzo Maillard. The magazine’s name borrows from the term ‘Iced Out’ (a reference to watches or jewellery fully set with diamonds) and ‘Heist’ in the sense that the venture is intended as a break out from the current framework of watch industry, which they argue is now stale in its presentation, overly-homogenised to the point of being just ‘a smooth surface’. The magazine aims to create a community around watch aficionados with the same convictions and tastes, where heritage is blended with the cutting-edge to foster an alternative watchmaking scene. | £20

Exclusive chat with musician Elles Bailey
Singer-songwriter Elles Bailey is Bristol born and bred, and is currently touring the UK and Europe. She sat down with The Bristol Magazine to reflect on Bristol’s music scene as we approach a major music event on 14 November.
The event is being hosted by PPL – the company which pays royalties to musicians and performers when their music is played on radio, TV and in public spaces. In 2024, for the first time Bristol hosts its Annual Performer Meeting, which gives a voice to the thousands of artists and musicians who are members of PPL. Elles adds hers to the perspectives being shared by musicians on how to build a music career in Bristol. She talks about the reality of being a musician outside of the mainstream, why Bristol is a true music city that must continue to thrive, and what advice she would give to local independent artists looking to pursue a career in the music business.
