This week's issue is slightly truncated with fewer of the regular features you find in Take Five. My apologies for the silence last week - it does feel as though I have been gone a lot longer than that. My husband decided that Memorial Day would be a fun time to start a ten-day hospital stay. He was wrong, you know, but sometimes you have to actually try something in order to learn.

He is safely ensconced in rehab up in Altoona now, regaining his strength, and I am working my way to the top of the pile of goodies. If you are awaiting your requested tick cards, rest assured they are on my to-do list!

Rosemarie Rotenberger paid a visit to very popular Ricketts Glen and the beautiful quiet green of the masthead shot proves you can find serenity anywhere. Even in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood as a matter of fact. I had some lovely morning walks there, including this morning where this lovely scene at Phipps Conservatory begged me to sit for a spell.

NEWS OF NOTE

The summer issue of our newsletter, Penn's Stewards, has been delayed at the printer but it has been sent to email subscribers and posted to the Publications page of our website. Apologies to the many members who receive theirs by mail. It IS on the way.

Congratulations to the Friends of White Clay Creek, who completed their long-running project to replace the bridge on the Penndel Trail, closing a much needed gap in a very popular trail. Lots of smiles down there in the southeast corner of the Commonwealth!

Thanks to The 'Burg zine for its piece centered on our 2022 theme of "clean water and forested ecosystems" with their piece on May 31: Stem to Stream: if you want cleaner river water, you need good tree cover."

Ditto the PA Township News, whose May issue features an article by PPFF writer Jessica Aiello, "The Value of Trees."

Tomorrow is National Get Outdoors Day and various parks are hosting events geared to the theme.

Head on up to Locust Lake State Park this afternoon to celebrate the park's 50th anniversary.

As you will see from a click to the pic, the Friends of {Tuscarora and} Locust Lake have a lot going on!

PPFF board member (and former state representative) Kate Harper authored an important op-ed that appeared last week in The Intelligencer of Bucks and Montgomery County and yesterday on Harrisburg's PennLive. She and we continue to urge you to visit the Take Action Center of the website and voice support for American Rescue Plan funding of parks and forests maintenance.

Hmmm. There are nearly 50 million state park users - how wonderful would it be to have 50 million emails sent!

IN CLOSING

Jessa Marie and her five-year old paid a visit to Hyner Run State Park and among the photos she posted is this one of the swimming pool at the park. What a peaceful setting. The sentiment strikes a resonant chord:

"Sometimes I'm so busy thinking about exploring new places, that I forget about our local gems. [We] went camping at Hyner Run State Park for the first time. It's a beautiful little park. Our campsite was right along the creek, they had a very nice swimming pool and play area for the kids, and of course we ventured up to [Hyner View State Park]. It never feels less amazing no matter how many times we go up. Ready for many more summer adventures..."

I hope "Fridays" will be back to normal next week! In the meantime, remember to enjoy the beauty in the outdoors all around you.
