As the Florida Legislature attempts to rein in “runaway litigation” against property insurers, proposals within the proposed legislation will negatively impact residents of Monroe County.
Monroe County Legislative Director Lisa Tennyson is hoping to have HB 305 amended to carve Monroe County out of Citizens increased rate caps. The County legislative team is working with Rep. Mooney on this. They are also working on the companion bill on the Senate side (SB 76), and have reached out the Senate bill sponsor on a carve-out amendment. Outcomes are yet to be determined. FEMA floodmap appeals
The 90-day appeal process is underway and both the City of Key West and Monroe County, including Marathon, Islamorada and Key Colony Beach, will be filing appeals. Monroe County's Floodplain Management Department is ready to help homeowners work through the process of applying for a FEMA grant for flood mitigation, including elevation. On a positive note, a resolution has passed the Florida House and Senate chambers that will, if approved by voters, amend the state constitution to prevent home improvements for flood mitigation from impacting the value of the property for tax purposes. If approved by voters in the 2022 election, then this bill would take effect Jan. 1, 2023. Read more...
