Teaching Maths for Mastery

AAMT is pleased to offer a series of 2 webinars in Teaching Maths for Mastery (November 12 and 19).  The webinars are given by Mathematics Education Innovation (MEI) and the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) in the UK.  The first webinar will look at the impact on maths education in England as a result of the widespread promotion and adoption of mastery teaching and learning practices. The second will focus on the detail of the structure and delivery of a mastery maths lesson in multiplicative reasoning at primary level.  See here for further information.

AAMT New Online Maths Shop

AAMT (in partnership with the Mathematical Association of Western Australia) has launched a new online store for books and other maths education products. The new store can be visited at https://mathsstore.org.au

We continue to sell your favourite maths books and also have a few new titles (including a series on Teaching for Mastery by Marshall Cavendish in Singapore to coincide with the Mastery webinars).

UK Maths Teaching Resources

Maths Education Innovation (MEI) in the UK is running an online maths competition for teams of senior students.  They would very much like to invite Australian schools to participate.  Questions are released every week between now and December. For further information, see Ritangle.

Australian Maths Trust: Problemo

The Australian Maths Trust (AMT) has launched an online maths problem solving resource designed to help teachers engage students and encourage mathematical thinking and creative problem-solving. 

Called Problemo, the platform has a library of more than 400 maths problems for years 3-10 and the problems are prepared by the same mathematicians and teachers that design the highly-regarded Australian Mathematics Competition. 

“For more than 40 years, we’ve been finding creative ways to get young Australians solving problems through our maths competitions and programs. Now Problemo builds on this expertise and allows us to share our maths problems across Australia and New Zealand in a new way,” said Nathan Ford, CEO of AMT.

National Mathematics Summer School

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Norman Do as the new Director of the National Mathematics Summer School.

Norm is a lecturer in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Monash University with research interests in Geometry and Topology. He has been a long-term advocate for the NMSS and has been intimately involved both as a student and lecturer.  Norm is also Chair of the Australian Mathematical Olympiad Committee. We are very lucky to have Norm as the new NMSS Director.
