North Carolina Project
by Karen (Zukowski) Dash, HR '87
Living in NYC from 1987-97, I was well aware of what a conman and fraud Donald Trump was. Still, his bleatings were background noise in the cacophony of the City. As he gained a national audience, energizing a long-dormant part of the electorate by fanning the flames of racism and sexism and lowering expectations of decency, patriotism, and public discourse, my volunteer work for the Democratic Party felt more urgent.
Volunteering with the CGB NC Election Deniers project has been a perfect opportunity for me to support this goal while working on my own time and at my own pace. We independently research the internet and social media for any Election Deniers/Stolen 2020 believers among Board of Elections officials in 100 North Carolina counties.
For example, I found election officials who are fans of Speakup4America, which sells pro-guns, pro-conspiracy theories, and Trump 2024 ("Let's Beat Them for the 3rd Time") apparel. We are also doing a mini-project looking at the Republican County Chairs who appointed the Republican election officials, including one who is a big fan of Newsmax and nutty local conspiracists. Our research will be used by the nonprofit Protect Our Election to focus on those potential election denier counties and bring political, social, or legal pressure on them to certify all election results – not only those in which Republicans win. CGB colleagues have been very helpful and supportive throughout the effort, and it has been energizing to work with a group of engaged and amazing alums.
