Thank you for signing up to this newsletter. It will provide key updates on the Moonrakers junction improvement scheme and details of any road closures which may affect you, your staff or your customers. If you'd like any more information, you can find this on our website or by contacting the team.
The £2.8m scheme will see the double roundabout replaced with a traffic light controlled junction, which will improve traffic flow, reduce journey times and make the junction more accessible for buses, cyclists and pedestrians.
Update from site
Utilities have finished on site
This month, our contractors have been assisting another utility provider to cross underneath Cricklade Road and have been helping them to install additional equipment underneath the road surface to meet future needs.
SSE and BT have also completed their final work on the west side of Cricklade Road - marking a significant milestone in the scheme. We do not expect that any further major utility work will need to take place at the junction as part of the Moonrakers improvement scheme.
Continuing with the installation of kerbs and drainage works
Our contractors, Alun Griffiths Ltd, are continuing to install kerbs and construct the drainage network along Cricklade Road and into Whitworth Road.
Kerbs are also being installed going north past the Moonrakers pub towards Penhill Drive.
The footpath outside the Moonrakers pub is being reconstructed following the completion of utility diversions on this section of the junction.
We have started to construct traffic islands at the mouth of Whitworth Road and on Cricklade Road.
We are also preparing to remove damaged road surface on some areas of Whitworth Road and Cricklade Road.
Whitworth Road closure
We continue to assess how and when we will reopen the small section of Whitworth Road that is currently closed off to motorists. We will only reopen the road when we are confident motorists and the operatives working on site will be safe.
What's coming up?
Installing new drainage connections
We are going to be installing new drainage connections between the Penhill Drive junction and the Moonrakers junction to improve water run-off between the two areas.
In order to do this, next week our contractor will be temporarily switching off the permanent traffic lights on Penhill Drive and installing temporary traffic lights in their place. Further traffic management measures will be implemented between Penhill Drive junction and the Moonrakers junction and will be in place for a three week period.
Our contractor will monitor these temporary traffic measures once implemented and make any alterations if necessary.
Widening Cricklade Road
In March, our contractors will be finishing work to widen Cricklade Road northbound.
Work on Beechcroft Road
Once we have completed the construction of traffic islands on Whitworth Road and Cricklade Road, we will be moving on to build the largest traffic island on Beechcroft Road.
Next month work will also ramp-up to construct the dedicated left turn from Cricklade Road onto Beechcroft Road when approaching from the north. This new lane will help to reduce the number of vehicles using the junction.
