A Summer of Promoting Enterprise


The summer is beginning, but that doesn’t mean that Promoting Enterprise is slowing down or not bringing you any news!

In this edition of the newsletter you can have a look through what has been going on, upcoming activities, the ongoing events calendar and how you can get involved with Promoting Enterprise.

Deadline approaching

The SME Week Youth Essay Competition, organised by the European Commission Directorate General for Single Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, is in its fourth year and is looking for answers to the following:

“Write the speech that you would give as the new Commissioner for SMEs and entrepreneurship to Europe’s entrepreneurs”

If you are between the ages of 18-25 the European Commission wants to hear what you would say as the new Commissioner, and is looking for your innovative ideas and thoughts. The Youth Essay Competition is a chance to share your thoughts and opinions with key policymakers and entrepreneurs on a European platform within the domains of enterprise, entrepreneurship and SMEs.

The submission deadline is 16 August 2019.

Youth Essay Competition 2019 – What can you expect from the SME Assembly?

The SME Week Youth Essay Competition is an opportunity to make your voice heard in front of the people that matter for entrepreneurship and industry. Once a year, entrepreneurs, policy makers, innovators and other SME stakeholders, gather at the prestigious SME Assembly, to tackle issues facing industry, gather new ideas and share experiences to help create a more robust, innovative and SME friendly European ecosystem.

But what is it like to attend? What can you expect from the SME Assembly as a Youth Essay Competition finalist? We asked the finalists from last year’s edition what they thought of the SME Assembly 2018 to give you a sneak peek of what it is like to attend!

    EEPA 2019 European deadline – Top national projects selected

    The European Enterprise promotion Awards (EEPA) have received all of the 2019 entries for this year’s European level of the competition. On 3 July 2019, the EEPA Secretariat received contributions from across Europe for the prestigious EEPA 2019 jury to consider for the European shortlist.

    EEPA 2019 – Meet the Jury!

    The European EEPA 2019 deadline has passed, and the jury are reviewing all of the national applications ahead of their jury meeting in September. But who are the EEPA 2019 jury? Who will be judging this year’s EEPA competition? It is time to meet the EEPA 2019 jury!

    Every year the EEPA jury has some experienced faces that return to help and judge the new set of applicants. We are proud to welcome back Prof. Thomas M. Cooney (Professor in Entrepreneurship, Dublin Institute of Technology), Thomas Wobben (Committee of the Regions), and Kristin Schreiber (DG for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs) to once again sit on the EEPA jury.

    In addition to our returning members, we also have several new faces that will be joining the jury this year and lending their experience and expertise to the judging process. In 2019 we are pleased to welcome Mr Darius Vodă (Romanian SME Envoy), Mr Petri Peltonen (Finnish SME Envoy), Ms Agnes Mathis (Director of Co-operatives Europe), Ms Anke Wiegand (Head of Unit Innovation Funding Financing at the Enterprise Europe Network Berlin Partner for Business and Technology) and Mads Váczy Kragh (CEO of Erhvervshus Sjælland, ‘Lean Landing’ Grand Jury Prize Winner 2018).

    European Startup Monitor 2019

    Calling all startup founders across Europe! Want to help shape EU policy? Looking for an opportunity to share your valuable insight as a founder? This is the opportunity for you!

    The European Startup Network is conducting the 2019 European Startup Monitor, and they need the expert insight of startup founders from all across Europe. As such, you are invited to share your insights in a 10 minute survey.

    Why participate?

    Participating in this survey will help EU policy makers to better understand the startup ecosystem and to meet your needs. Your voices will be reflected in the policy recommendations given to the European Commission in the final 2019 European Startup Monitor Report. The data from each country should be as representative and comprehensive as possible, so that policy makers can really gain the correct insights into the European start-up ecosystem and work to boost its potential. So the more participants – the better!

    Furthermore, as a startup you will be able to directly compare some of your answers regarding employment, financing, and international growth with the answers from of hundreds of startups from the 2018 survey. You may also win a ticket to the SLUSH event from November 21-22, 2019 in Helsinki!
