How to Handle Vegetation Growth on Bottomland

Do you want to clear or treat vegetation on the bottomlands in front of your property? It's up to the individual property owners to ensure they have the authority to conduct any type of project that is on bottomlands owned by someone else. Property owners should contact FLTF to receive assistance and address any issues regarding permission from the bottomland owner before clearing or treating vegetation and when applying for any Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) permits.

FLTF is working with landowners, EGLE, Weed Assessment Districts and Lake Improvement Boards to develop an overall plan for bottomland management by Spring 2021.

FAQs
Special Assessment District

Can we have a public vote on the Special Assessment District?

The Special Assessment District was legally established by circuit court order in May 2019 and therefore gives FLTF the authority to assess property owners under Part 307.  We will survey residents in January/February 2021 about the assessment and conduct public hearings in 2021 to get property owner input.

What happens to the property assessment if I sell my property?

The assessment will appear on the property taxes so the new owner will simply continue to pay the annual assessment. Property owners are not required to pay off the assessment if they sell their property.

Is FLTF using the same factors (headwater, amount of frontage, adjoining properties, etc.) to determine what each parcel's assessment will be?

We are still working out the details of the assessment and have not yet determined the factors that will impact the amount of assessment at this time.
