Our Canadian readers are celebrating a long weekend of getting-ready-for-summer chores – docks, decks, boats, screen windows, etc. To prove that everything is better in France, there are two long weekends in a row, with Ascension Day on May 26th and Whit Monday on June 6th.
So, what would you do with all that time to explore? Start with the A-list:
In her article below, photographer Renata Haidle explains why she returned to Avignon after a long break from travel. Personally, I have a soft spot for Aix-en-Provence, the sophisticated city with its daily markets and noteworthy sights. Then again, there is Arles with its Roman foundations, photography exposition, and gleaming LUMA Arles creative campus.
At the crossroads of the Luberon is tiny Ansouis with a castle, charming pedestrian-only streets, and a Michelin star restaurant. In the Alpilles, Aureille is a village that oozes authenticity, and residents will tell you that the best thing is the lack of tourist traffic. Finally, Antibes sits on the Cote d’Azur between ritzy Cannes and Nice on the coast. Old Antibes is an easily walkable treasure trove of pedestrian-friendly streets and plazas filled with restaurant tables shaded by oversized umbrellas.
