News from St. Andrew's - July 29, 2020

Dear St. Andrew's Congregation:

New COVID guidelines were recently issued, which includes a mandate for the wearing of masks inside of buildings.  As you may know, these arise out of the new evidence that droplets/particles can linger for several hours in a room, which was not the belief earlier.  Our Health Advisory Task Force met Tuesday to discuss the new directive and how to apply it to our operations.  We will be issuing the new protocols, but here's some highlights:

  • We will put a sign on the doors that everyone who enters needs to wear a mask before entering.  We have a supply on site so if someone does not bring one they will be given one to use when they come in.
  • Everyone in the office should wear masks while there.  We are working on the details of various routine activities that take place and how to best comply with the new order.
  • Windows should routinely be opened in rooms where anyone is present.
  • Suzanne is revising our protocols for outdoor meetings and we will share that when it is completed.
  • We will be discussing with Pablo and the Llamada Final group how they might be able to have smaller outdoor gatherings using the latest procedures.

In terms of worship, I had originally planned to be on vacation and out of town this week, but the rise in COVID concerns led us to cancel those plans.  Before we made that decision, I had been in conversation with our sister church in Summerland about "lending" us one of their recent sermons to use in my absence.  Associate Pastor David Mosgofian Koeker then sent us a sermon he recently gave on the experience of the Holy Spirit.  So I decided we can still welcome David to our digital gathering even though I'm in town.  I will offer the opening words and Disciple Dog will share a thought on David's theme.  It's a communion Sunday, and Janet Ewart will join me in leading the liturgy.  Chris and Erin will once again share their musical gifts.  As we know this is a time of creative adaptation, and I am grateful for David's contribution.

Adult Education This Sunday:  Explore the mysterious, beautiful and alluring Song of Songs, at times referred to as Song of Solomon, in a study led by Rev. Dr. Lisa Wolfe, Professor of Hebrew Bible at Oklahoma City University and an ordained minister in the UCC.  Combining deep scholarship with a charming enthusiasm for the text, Dr. Wolfe navigates this intricate and sometimes puzzling book.  Who Wrote it?  What sort of people are the main characters?  Is it based in history, mythology … or both?  As you enter into the world of the lovers Ra’yati and Dodi, you will have plenty of opportunities to laugh and even blush, right along with Dr. Wolfe.  We invite you into the adventure of re-reading and re-imagining this powerful and intriguing work of poetry and literature in our Zoom Adult Education Class on Sunday August 2nd at 11:00 AM.

The syllabus for the class is available HERE.

The Adult Education Committee will begin this series on July 12, 2020. Please join us on Zoom at 11 AM on Sundays!
