John
Baxter Taylor Jr. (
1882–
1908)
was an American track
and field athlete,
believed
to be
the first African
American to
win an Olympic
gold medal. He
was
born in Washington D.C. to former slaves. His
family
settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he attended public
schools and graduated from Central High School in
1902.Taylor was a member of the gold medal-winning men's medley
relay team at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London.
He ran the third leg, performing the 400 meters.
Moses
“Fleet” Fleetwood Walker
(1857-1924)
born in Mount Pleasant, Ohio, and raised in Steubenville near the
Ohio-West Virginia border, Walker played catcher during the 1884
season for the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American
Association, which competed with the National League. Although Jackie
Robinson is
widely recognized as the first African-American to play in the Major
Leagues, Walker is acknowledged by historians at the National
Baseball Hall of Fame to actually be the first, six decades before
Robinson suited up for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947.
Kenneth
Stanley Washington (1918
– 1971) was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the
city's Lincoln Heights neighborhood. He
was
an American professional football player who was the
first African-American to sign a contract with a National
Football League (NFL) team in the modern (post-World War II)
era. He played college football for the UCLA Bruins.
Earl
Francis Lloyd (1928
– 2015) born in Alexandria, Virginia, was the first African
American player to play a game in the National Basketball
Association (NBA). He
was an
All–American player at West Virginia State University, Lloyd
helped lead West Virginia State to an undefeated season in 1948. As a
professional, Lloyd helped lead the Syracuse Nationals to
the 1955 NBA Championship. Lloyd was inducted into the Naismith
Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
Jack
Johnson
(1878–1946) defeated Canadian Tommy Burns to become the first
African American world heavyweight boxing champion. Johnson
was born in Galveston, TX. He won 72 or his 95 fights, 38 were wins
by knock outs.
Charles
Luther Sifford (1922
– 2015) born in Charlotte, North Carolina, became the
first African American golfer to earn a PGA Tour card. He won the
1967 Greater Hartford Open Invitational and 1969 Los Angeles Open. He
had 22 professional golf tournament wins.
