Welcome to the last edition of Current Moves for 2022.

In this edition we have an invitation to review the "Cochrane Systematic Review of Dance Movement Therapy for Dementia" along with a 'call for papers' for a very special issue of "Eco psychotherapy, environmental movement and the imperative of embodied practice with the earth in mind". HEMF is also calling for all applications for Research Grants for 2023.

Cochrane Systematic Review of Dance Movement Therapy for Dementia.

This article compiles all the evidence available for the efficacy of Dance Movement Therapy in the treatment and support of Dementia.

Why is this review important?

Dementia currently affects approximately 35.6 million people worldwide and there is an expectation that, as people are growing older,there will be a substantial increase inthenumber of people affected. Dementia literature argues for the need to address the complexity of the symptoms and work with the person as a whole. It is possible that dance movement therapy, an embodied psychological intervention that uses movement and dance to express and explore emotions, may be useful for people with dementia. However, its effectiveness remains unclear. This is the ﬁrst review of the effectiveness of dance movement therapy for dementia and will add to the evidence base regarding available non-pharmacological interventions for dementia.

The Journal of Body, Movement and Dance in Psychotherapy is delighted to announce a Call for Papers for a Special Issue on:

Eco psychotherapy, environmental movement and the imperative of embodied practice with the earth in mind

This special issue will celebrate research and practice that brings moving bodies to the foreground and combines this with a commitment to environmental justice. As the climate emergency quickens and becomes more visible, so does the realisation that the wellbeing of individuals and the health of the planet are mutually implicated. As mental health problems increase and environmental degradation escalates, now, more than ever, there is a need for embodied, empathic compassion for ourselves each other and the earth that is our home. This belongs to a wider landscape of social, political and environmental justice.

The journal invites practice-led research papers, case studies, clinical reflections, and theoretical essays from the prosaic to the poetic that locate mental health and wellbeing in the primacy of the moving body, in relation to a wider ecological context.

The editors welcome contributions from interdisciplinary perspectives, such as environmental movement, dance movement psychotherapy, eco-psychotherapy, body psychotherapy, new materialism and posthumanism.

NAT11068 Graduate Diploma in Somatics and Dance Movement Therapy

Clinical training in Dance Movement therapy is essential to the field.

This course is a postgraduate course for Allied Health Professionals wanting to develop their professional capability to work in a Somatic and Dance Movement Therapy manner with their clients.

Entry into the course requires a qualification in movement/dance/bodywork or other Allied Health disciplines and graduates will be eligible for entry to the DTAA at Provisional Professional member level.

The therapeutic use of movement assists us to change within and in relationship to others.

As we change our mode of action, our image of ourselves also changes. - Who am I? - How do I move? - Which parts of me work to express myself? - Where does my movement initiate? - Does my mind lead or follow? - Do I trust my body?

Most of human interaction is non-verbal and therapy is lacking if we don’t utilise this information, therefore we must enhance our skills in observing the non-verbal; generally presented to us in movement, gesture, posture, and expression.

In this course we introduce students to a framework and vocabulary for grasping this non-verbal data equipping graduates with the skills to work as a Dance Movement Therapist with a range of clinical populations.

There are 5 scheduled contact Modules associated with this course and regular virtual online tutorials throughout the program. Each Module consists of individual units of competency. The introductory modules can be studied as independent short courses for Professional Development and available both face to face and via live streaming.

This training program is registered under Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations as Psychotherapist.

This course is intended to provide students with the following general education outcomes:

Movement and anatomical terminology
Body-oriented, somatic and dance/movement approaches in working with survivors of trauma
Nervous system function through movement
Movement Analysis using Laban Movement Analysis
Theoretical frameworks for delivering Dance Movement Therapy to a broad range of populations
Psychotherapy and counselling techniques appropriate for use in Somatics and Dance Movement Therapy

If you're not sure about enrolling in the full program at this stage, then the Fundamentals course is a great option.

The Somatics and Dance Movement Therapy Fundamentals course comprises of the following introductory units of competency and is delivered over a three day period with additional tutorials and assessment requirements:

NAT11068001 - Facilitate a Somatics and Dance Movement Therapy session

NAT11068002 - Apply Laban Movement Analysis in Dance Movement Therapy

NAT11068003 - Assess Developmental Movement in Dance Movement Therapy

Graduates of other industry-based courses are welcome to apply to have their experience formally recognised to achieve this Government Accredited Graduate Diploma (11068NAT) by Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Opportunity to Receive a Research Grant

The Hanny Exiner Memorial Foundation annual grant round is open between Mid November 2022 and Mid January 2023 for research studies/projects conducted in Australasia which contribute to the knowledge base on the healing power of dance. Practitioners in dance movement therapy, therapeutic dance or dance for wellbeing* are invited to apply under one of three streams:

Stream 1: Research study in Dance Movement Therapy (DMT)

Stream 2: Research study in Dance Movement Therapy or Therapeutic Dance or Dance for Wellbeing.

Two components:
a) A mentoring component to assist in development of research idea; leading to
b) implementing research study.

Stream 3: Projects contributing to the knowledge base of DMT, Therapeutic Dance or Dance for Wellbeing. This category may include creation of educational support materials, film, peer review journal article.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

Looking for DMT with interest in working on a Video Project

Paid Work for A professional Member:

The Hanny Exiner Memorial Foundation (HEMF) is seeking expressions of interest from professional members of the DTAA, who have experience in teaching the principles of dance movement therapy practice and knowledge/experience of dmt in the disability field, to edit already existing video footage of a dance therapy group with people with a disability. HEMF will fund this work.

Specifically, the person will be asked to draw out the educational aspects of the video footage and, on the basis of that, work with a video editor to produce a final edited version which will provide an educational resource for dmt teachers, students and practitioners.

Once the successful applicant is selected, the first task will be to develop the full scope of the project in consultation with HEMF.

The work can be done through online contact, so geographical constraints do not apply.
