“In Times Like These”
Happy New Year! We start 2026 off reflecting on familiar church songs and the biblical inspiration behind their creation. Although they were written years ago, their impact continues to soothe our souls through words of faith and hope.
Songwriter Ruth Caye Jones wrote these words back in 1943…
“In times like these we need a Savior; In times like these we need an anchor. Be very sure, be very sure. Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!”
A pastor’s wife in Pennsylvania and the mother of five, she was distressed by the headlines of her Pittsburgh newspaper which also published the World War II casualty lists. The times were incredibly challenging. Supplies were rationed at home, and everyone was living under grueling strain.
Ruth shared that she drew inspiration from 2 Timothy 3, pondering the opening words, “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come.”
A song began composing itself in her mind. She jotted some lyrics on a small pad in her apron pocket. A series of notes also played in her mind. Soon the notes and music congealed to become one of the most beloved Gospel songs of the 1940s and 1950s, “In Times Like These.”
The lyrics go on to say, “This Rock is Jesus, yes, He’s the One. This Rock is Jesus, the only One! Be very sure, be very sure. Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock.”
Hebrews 6:19 was also a source of Ruth’s inspiration, which says: “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast….”
To God Be The Glory for the Bible, our incredible source of uncompromising truth and strength. As we begin this brand new year of 2026, may the lyrics of this song continue to resonate.
“In Times Like These” let us all be very sure “our anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!”
