    Food for Thought

    Being right

Have you ever noticed that if you disagree with someone about something, you'll never get them to see your point of view in a positive light, if you insist they are wrong?

No one likes to be told they are wrong. If you wish to make another see your point of view, don't accuse them of being wrong / stupid. Try discussion instead. Show you understand where they come from, find good in their motives as well. And then through discussion point out what made you think the way you do. When they see you are not point blank condemning them, they are more likely to listen. Also this little habit broadens your own views as well, when you actively try to understandthe other person.

Now, of course there are subjects that are so totally against your values you cannot find good in the other one's opinion. Then it is best to agree to disagree. And take the experience as a lesson - it showed you clearly what you do not believe in and like, and also the other side of the coin; your own core values.

And you know what: you don't need to express an opinion about everything. There are people who try to get everyone else to argue with them (so that they may convince themselves that they are right). You know the type... They can be pretty aggressive. Don't fall into their trap. Just don't take part in that discussion. Walk away, pretend you are busy - whatever it takes.

If you feel strongly about issues, you can express your opinions by living according to your values peacefully. Others will notice, and know your values because of your everyday behaviour.

Don't talk in ways that insult other people, don't tell racist jokes, do your best to protect the environment, be kind and considerate towards other people and animals... Your everyday choices are the best way to show what you believe in.

    Happiness Journal / Oranges

I like freshly squeezed orange juice in the mornings so there are plenty of oranges around in our kitchen. We also have this wine rack and I put the oranges there for a photograph. It looked so pretty we keep our oranges in it these days.

    Finger on the steak

"Why are you carrying that plate so that your finger in on my steak?"

"I want to make sure it doesn't fall to the floor again."

Do you have a funny story you would like to see published in this letter? An event, what someone said? If so, send me your funny story in an email

    Today's Happiness

    Enjoying summer

It has been amazingly warm here in Finland. We are so used to having cold temperatures during midsummer we can hardly believe it is almost hot! (It is a tradition here - no matter how beautiful the weather is in the early summer, there is a saying there are two days when the weather is always alike; Christmas and Midsummer. Only there may be more snow in Midsummer... And after it has passed, the warm weather returns.)

We walked near the old Turku Cathderal with Hubby yesterday and decided to sit at a restaurant terrace for a few moments.

What made you happy today? Send a note and tell, if you wish to share your little happy moment with others.

    Daily Quote

“He who establishes his argument by noise and command, shows that his reason is weak.”

    ― Michel de Montaigne

Quote from Creature Wars 1 / The Death of a Vampire

The three vampires standing out of reach of the pool of light cast by the reading lamp said nothing, even though an age seemed to have passed and still their companion feasted.

Finally, he straightened himself, his eyes closed in enjoyment, his mouth slightly open so the tips of his fangs were showing. He licked the last drop of blood from his lower lip.

“An exquisite aroma…” he said, still savouring the taste.

She lay on her back, her head turned to the side so that her neck was exposed and the fresh bitemarks were clearly visible. She continued to sleep heavily. They had ensured that she would. The other side of her bed was covered in books – one was open, with her right hand over it. The face of an ancient Egyptian statue stared at them from between her fingers. She had fallen asleep in the middle of her reading.

“Is she the one you were looking for?” one of the vampires in the shadows asked.

The vampire opened his eyes. The blackness was already receding, revealing the blue. He smiled – a leisurely, sated smile.

“She is, Tomas, she is. A Reader and a Writer, just as I suspected. What luck that I followed her to that bar. Not only will she be of immense use to me, but look at how beautiful she is! She will be an asset; and I’m about to make sure no one else will approach her.”

He dug into his pockets and pulled out a ring. The vampires glanced at each other.

"Aaron... is that what I think it is ... a ring? You can't possibly be thinking of a betrothal... What would your father – our father…"

"I have always appreciated your loyalty, Tomas. But for now – stay out of my business."

I sell my books directly too. The ebooks are cheap to buy and the big e-stores don't share much of the price with the authors. That is why I have downloaded my books to Payhip - they don't take a commission and I get more to pay my editor, proofreader and cover designer. All of whom are one-woman businesses themselves.

If you prefer to write a short happy note each day, I have created planners for this effect. You can write your daily happiness in the squares of the weekly spread - and plan future happiness using the monthly pages. There are even happy (repositionable) stickers included in the planner.
