Veterans Day
Veterans Day honors all of those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or alive — although it's largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices. Veterans Day has its origins at the end of World War I when at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the fighting ended with the signing of an armistice. U.S. Soldiers celebrate the armistice that ended World War I, November 11, 1918. A year later, President Woodrow Wilson celebrated what was originally known as Armistice Day for the first time. In 1954, after lobbying efforts by veterans' service organizations, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the 1938 act that had made Armistice Day a holiday, striking the word “Armistice” in favor of “Veterans.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation on June 1, 1954.

Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Paul
Sails
for Rome”
Aim:
Know how
Paul’s
faith
in God enabled him to remain calm in the midst of a storm;
Appreciate
how
our relationship with God helps us cope in a crisis;
and Witness
to
others about relying on God’s strength when facing crises.
Background:
Acts 27
Bible
Lesson:
Acts
27:1-2,
33-44
“And
the rest, some on boards, and some on [broken pieces] of the ship.
And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.” Acts
27:44 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Book of Acts is the second New Testament Book (the Gospel According
to Luke being the first) authored by the physician Luke under the
inspiration of God. Its title is sometimes referred to as the “Acts
of the Holy Spirit.” Acts recounts how early followers of Jesus
Christ led by the Holy Spirit spread the Gospel far beyond the
confines of Jewish life to the whole world. In
last week’s lesson, Paul appeared before Festus, governor of
Judea, and King Agrippa and Bernice. In this week’s lesson, Paul
begins a voyage to Rome to appear before Caesar. In route, his ship
experiences a fierce storm and the crew, the soldiers, Paul and the
other prisoners become shipwreck on an island. Throughout this scary
ordeal, Paul remains calm as he completely places his trust in the
God of his salvation.
-
Acts
27:1-2,
Calm
before the Storm:
The
Roman officials
grant
Paul’s request which
is afforded to all Roman citizens to
appeal his case to Caesar. Paul along with other prisoners were
delivered to Julius, who
is an
officer responsible for an
elite
military group of one hundred soldiers. Julius
and his men are
to transport the prisoners
to Italy by sea. As
they set sail, they found the winds to be contrary and the sea to be
rough. Paul warns Julius that he perceives that the voyage will
result in damage to the ship, loss of the cargo, and risk of their
lives.
The owner of the ship and the ship’s skipper disagreed with Paul’s
warning and they set sail. The ship experienced strong winds and
rough seas that prevented
them from
successfully
navigating
their intended
route.
Eventually, the decision was made to let the ship drift along,
driven by the wind. After
a time of dark skies in a storm, fear of the ship being destroyed
and the loss of life overshadowed the crew; however, Paul comforted
the crew by declaring that in a vision from God, he
was assured
that there would be no loss of life.
- Acts
27:33-38,
Calm
in the Storm:
Paul
encouraged the crew and the passengers, while in the storm to eat to
provide the energy needed to face the upcoming ordeal of their
voyage at sea. Paul’s faith in God’s promised of deliverance
never wavered even in the midst of the fierce storm. Finally,
the crew was forced to throw the cargo overboard and release the
life boats to avoid the
ship being
sunk by the storm. Even the anchors were jettisoned because the
waves were so fierce.
-
Acts
27:39-44,
Shipwrecked,
But Saved:
As
the ship drifted in the rough waters, it was feared that rocks would
damage the hull of the ship. The ship runs aground and the back of
the ship was damaged by the angry waves. As the ship began to
breakup, the soldiers were in favor of killing the prisoners to
prevent them from escaping. Julius, the leader of the elite
detachment of soldiers, ordered that
the
lives
of
the prisoners be spared. Those who could swim were ordered to swim
to shore and the others were ordered to grab a hold of
a piece of the broken ship and make their way to shore. Just
as Paul had foretold from
his heavenly vision, no
lives were lost and all made it to the shore of a nearby island.
Take
Aways:
-
God
is able to keep us even when we encounter the many
storms
of life which come in many different forms.
-
When
Christians
exhibit
a
calm demeanor while
experiencing
crises in life, we
are provided opportunities
to share
our
faith
in
God
with others.
-
Each
of life’s challenges provides opportunities for our faith in God
to grow.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“And
we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.” Romans
8:28 KJV
“Ye
are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater
is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John
4:4 KJV
“Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abednego replied, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need
to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing
furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us
from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn't, we want to
make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your
gods or worship the gold statue you have set up."” Daniel
3:16-18 NLT
“Wait
on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart:
wait, I say, on the LORD.” Psalms
27:14 KJV
“Even
the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly
fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew [their] strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be
weary; [and] they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah
40:30-31 KJV
