A TRIBUTE TO OUR 40 YEAR CHRISTIANS WHO ARE 80 and Over |
|
|
|
|
2022 has continued to be a year of trouble, struggles, a health
Pandemic, along with worldly issues of racism, political strife, and
the everyday stress of life. Due to a deadly virus called the
COVID-19, some sanctuaries remain closed or have limited services.
Many churches have gone to virtual and mainstreamed Live Sunday
Morning services. We continue to have zoom meetings and many on-line
meetings and continue the wearing of facial masks. Now in the middle
of 2022, many new variants have evolved, along with a new disease
called the Monkey-pox. After the introduction of many new
vaccinations and boosters. We remain puzzled about what is going
on!!!???
Many of our
oldest church members have lived through wars, the Spanish flu,
racial unrest as well social distresses of our nation. In spite of
it all, our church continues to be that beacon on the hill in the
community that has at its anchor –a group of very active Christians
called the 40 year Christians---those who have been Christians for at
least 40 years or more.
From that
group we wish to highlight at least 25 and possibly more—that are
80 and plus years of age! They can truly testify of the goodness and
grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This group of individuals
can also truly be a witness to Psalms 46:1 which reads “God is our
refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”

Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Stephen’s
Arrest and Speech”
Aim:
Discuss the
stand that Stephen took as a response to his faith;
Feel
motivated
to confront principalities and powers or our day;
and Seek
the
power and wisdom of Spirit
in
our efforts to speak truth.
Background:
Acts
6:8-7:53
Bible
Lesson:
Acts
6:8-7:2A
“And
Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles
among the people.” Acts
6:8
KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Book of Acts is the second New Testament Book (the
Gospel According to Luke being the first) authored
by the physician Luke under the inspiration of God. Its title is
sometimes referred to as the “Acts of the Apostles or the Acts of
the Holy Spirit.” Acts recounts how early followers of Jesus
Christ led by the Holy Spirit spread the Gospel far beyond the
confines of Jewish life to the whole world. In
Acts Chapter 6,
Luke describes the rapid growth of Christianity. As with most growth
there are growing pains, here the diversity of believers spanned
Jews who spoke Aramaic and those who spoke Hebrew. The early saints
shared their resources with each others. The widows were a group
that was specifically cared for. The Greek speaking saints
complained that their widows were neglected in favor of the Hebrew
speaking widows. There is not proof of this disparity presented,
but never the less the complaint is made. The apostles assembled
the saints to address the matter. Their solution was to have those
assembled to select seven men of a good reputation, full of the Holy
Spirit who exhibited wisdom and to assign them the responsibility of
distributing food and other
resources to the widows. Meanwhile, the apostles would devote their
time and efforts in prayer and teaching God’s Word. This solution
was embraced by all and seven men were selected. (“Everyone
liked this idea, and they chose the following: Stephen (a man full
of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon,
Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch (an earlier convert to the Jewish
faith Act 6:5 NLT). The
apostles set these men, who
were of the Greek speaking Jews,
apart with prayer and
by the laying on of hands and appointed them to their task of
service; however, only two
of the seven
are mentioned further in scripture, Stephen and Philip. Our lesson
today highlights the movements of Stephen.
- Acts
6:8-10,
Introduction
to Stephen:
Stephen,
whose name means wreath or crown, by the aid of the Holy Spirit
performed
many sign and wonders among the people. This implies that he was
very much involved in the spreading of the Gospel. Signs and wonders
gave evidence to his authorization by God to share the Good News for
the purpose of drawing unbelievers to Jesus Christ. Jews
from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and the province of Asia who were
associated with the Freedman’s synagogue debated Stephen and
opposed the Gospel. They were unable to withstand Stephen’s
wisdom and spirit in his expounding of the Gospel.
-
Acts
6:11-14,
Opposition
to Stephen:
These
non-believers of
the Freeman Synagogue resorted
to securing false witnesses to accuse Stephen of blasphemy of
Moses and even God. The elders and the teachers were so
alarmed
by the these accusations that
they
had Stephen arrested and
brought before the Sanhedrin Council, the highest Religious Body of
that time to face these serious charges of blasphemy. The false
witnesses claimed that Stephen continually speaking against the
Temple and the Laws delivered by Moses from God. They
further twisted a quote of Jesus regarding the destruction of
this
temple and building it
again
in three days to be the literal destruction the Holy Temple
(Speaking of his body not the temple:
“Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in
three days I will raise it up.” John 2:19 KJV),
their sacred place of worship and the dissolution of the Laws
delivered
by Moses from God.
-
Acts
6:15-7:2A,
Stephen’s
Effect on the Sanhedrin:
After
these false accusation, the entire Sanhedrin council membership
stared intently at Stephen’s face. Luke states that his face
appeared to
possess
the brightness
of an angel. The
high priest, the presiding official, asks Stephen whether the
accusations
are true. Stephen response with “Men, brethren, and fathers
listen very intently to what I am about to say. Our lesson ends
here with next Sunday’s lesson discussing Stephen’s speech to
the Sanhedrin Council. But just as a preview, Stephen recounts the
history of the people of Israel.
Take
Aways:
-
There
will be opposition to the Gospel, but Christians must boldly
continue to share the Good News whether it is heard or not.
-
Christians
do not share the Gospel with our own power but by the power given
by the Holy Spirit.
-
Opposition
to the Gospel sometimes comes from so called High Places from People
of Authority
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart,
all ye that hope in the LORD.” Psalm
31:24 KJV
“These
things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the
world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have
overcome the world.” John
16:33 KJV
“Wait
on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart:
wait, I say, on the LORD.” Psalm
27:14 KJV
“And
when he had called the people [unto him] with his disciples also, he
said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself,
and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his
life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and
the gospel's, the same shall save it.” Mark
8:34-35 KJV
“For
what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and
lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this
adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be
ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy
angels.” Mark
8:36-38 KJV
