From the Director
We’re in the homestretch of 2021! What a year this has been – it feels like our busiest year ever. As we enter the holiday season, we wish you all the joy and peace and love that this time of year promises us. Thank you all for a crazy, wonderful, busy, interesting year. We are lucky to have each other to connect and engage with. It’s also our Birthday, so please make a wish for us and one for you for good measure. We will be slowing down the last two weeks of December to catch our breath and recharge our batteries, as will a lot of our volunteers. If you know that you’ll need a volunteer for something, please let us know by December 17th.
Here’s to a healthy and happy 2022.

Celebrate & Learn about Chanukah -- 1st Night Candle Lighting
We invite everyone to join us to learn about and celebrate together the first night of Chanukah (Hanukkah) on Zoom. You don’t have to be Jewish to attend! Everyone is welcome to come and learn about the holiday, its history and traditions. NEXT Village member Edith Kaplan will light the first night candle to begin the eight day celebration. We welcome anyone who has a menorah to light theirs also and to share your traditions and stories about the holiday. We had such a special night last year and want to thank Edith for once again welcoming us to join her to learn and celebrate together.

After all, it's about coming together! We should have some entertainment, as well.

What is a Charitable Gift Annuity and is it Right for You?
A charitable gift annuity is a way you can make a gift to a favorite charity and receive fixed payments for life.
For retirees, gift annuities can sound like an attractive option for a tax deduction that provides the security of increased cash flow through fixed payments during your life. However like any investment option, there are many things to consider and the options can be confusing and daunting.
Fortunately we have an expert to help us understand the basics like what a charitable gift annuity is, types of annuities, how they work, some things to consider before deciding if one might be right for you, as well as questions to ask a charity.
Presenter: Phil Purcell, CFRE, MPA/JD; Consultant for Philanthropy, LLC; Adjunct Faculty, Indiana University Maurer School of Law and Lilly School of Philanthropy; President-elect of the American Council on Gift Annuities (ACGA), a nonprofit organization whose vision is to advance and promote responsible philanthropy.

SF Bay Holiday Boat Parade
This is not an organized NEXT Village event, but for those looking for more opportunities to have holiday fun, we’ve heard that Santa will be a part of the oldest and largest lighted holiday boat parade on SF Bay. The parade route goes from Crissy Field to Pier 39. No need to register with the NEXT Village for this public event, but if you do, we’ll send you updates if we receive any. We’ve heard some things in the works for the Marina area include a live blues band (Blind Lemon Pledge), a holiday train that gives rides around the Marina to adults and kids, and perhaps even ukuleles playing holiday tunes.

Meet AJ!
Though AJ lives by the motto, "Do small things with great love,” her contributions to NEXT Village have been anything but small! Since joining as a volunteer in September, AJ has developed a close connection with a member and enjoyed weekly walks with them.
AJ says, "Being a volunteer gives my life purpose and value, and allows me to spread kindness and joy and connect with my community." Her kindness and consistency certainly does not go unnoticed by the team at NEXT. Thank you AJ!
If you’d like to go on walks with your neighbors, sign up to be a NEXT Village volunteer like AJ. Call the Volunteer Coordinator at 415-301-3742 extension 0.

Studies look into LGBTQ+ suicide risk
by John Ferrannini, Assistant Editor. Tuesday Nov 16, 2021
Full Story: https://www.ebar.com/index.php...
A pair of studies released within the past week indicate that gay, lesbian, and bisexual adults have an elevated risk of suicidality in almost every age and racial category over their heterosexual peers, and that gay and bisexual men who move to a country more accepting of LGBTQ civil rights experience a lower risk of suicide and depression.
The first study, "Suicidality Among Sexual Minority Adults: Gender, Age, and Race/Ethnicity Differences," was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine November 8...The study states at the outset that while it has long been known that LGB adults have an increased risk of suicidality (defined as suicidal ideation, suicide plans, and suicide attempts), "there is little information available about how this risk may vary by gender, age, and race/ethnicity."
The study found no significant difference in suicidality among gay and bisexual men of different racial and ethnic groups. However, Black women who are lesbian or bisexual had lower risk of suicidal thoughts relative to white women who are lesbian or bisexual.
As the study was limited in scope to Europe and Asia, the U.S. was not one of the 48 countries included.
If you are having a crisis, San Francisco Suicide Prevention's 24-hour crisis line is (415) 781-0500. Its HIV Nightline is (415) 434-2437 or 1-800-273-2437. For the 24-hour crisis text line, text (415) 200-2920. For more information, click here.
