Dear USET/USET SPF Family,
USET’s Tribal Epidemiology Center (TEC) provides up to date information relevant to the transition out of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this alert is to update USET member Tribal Nations to the status of the national emergency enacted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ending of the COVID-19 national emergency is different from the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) and will not impact Health and Human Services (HHS) operations or the associated unwinding of the COVID-19 PHE scheduled for May 11, 2023. Secretary of HHS, Xavier Becerra, continues to issue fact sheets and other preparatory documents for the expiration of the PHE, including a recent fact sheet sent to Governors that can be accessed here.
On March 28th, the United States Senate passed House Joint Resolution 7 (H.J. Res. 7), legislation to end the national emergency declaration related to COVID-19 that has been in place for more than three years. President Joe Biden signed H.J. Res. 7 into law, officially ending the national emergency on April 10th. In a White House Press Briefing, United States Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre reassured reporters that the COVID-19 Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA) for testing, vaccines, and treatments would not be affected. These EUAs can only be terminated by the HHS Secretary.
USET TEC and USET SPF aim to support Tribal Nations during this transitional period and will deliver pertinent informational alerts highlighting changes and the impact in the coming weeks.
