An ever busy team, below are a few updates from the PRAM/CIET network.

Monthly Meeting

Fuzzy cognitive mapping in artificial intelligence and machine learning

The PRAM team unites monthly to provide project updates, present research protocols, practice dissertations defences, and more.

This month, the PRAM team welcomed Dr Samira Abbasgholizadeh-Rahimi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine. She is part of the Canadian Operational Research Society and the Director of Artificial Intelligence in Family Medicine (AIFM).

Dr Rahimi shared insights into the application of fuzzy cognitive mapping in artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) (learning algorithms and optimization). This was an excellent introduction to AI/ML, and we look forward to having Dr Rahimi join McGill's FMED 702 advanced seminar on fuzzy cognitive mapping this fall to share her work.

Intercultural dialogue between traditional midwives and Western physicians

On October 13, our colleague from CIETmexico, Dr Sergio Paredes-Solís, shared a presentation at the International Seminar on Political and Socio-economic Perspectives of Health during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He discussed the promotion of intercultural dialogue between Indigenous traditional midwives and Western doctors in the South of Mexico.

PROJECT UPDATE

Cellphilming in Bauchi State, Nigeria

Back in August, we shared about upcoming cellphilming training sessions in Bauchi of local facilitators who will later work with adolescent girls and boys and other community members to create cellphilms exploring their experiences on the topic of sexual and reproductive health.

As part of the training, a mini cellphilm festival was held in October to share everyone's incredible creations, with prizes and acknowledgments being awarded to participants for their contributions!

Over 40 people attended, including: government officers from the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SPHCDA), the Toro Local Government Authority, and the Ministry of Health; partners from FOMWAN (Federation of Muslim Women's Association in Nigeria); senior and junior project teams from FOMWAN-CIET who created the cellphilms; and the international team from CIET-PRAM who attended remotely.

It was certainly a night to remember, and we invite you to watch two of the winning videos! Congratulations to all involved!

Announcements

The PRAM team would like to congratulate Dr Mona Ghadirian for successfully defending her doctoral dissertation this month at McGill University - Macdonald Campus. Her project, entitled "Evaluating the effectiveness of a participatory video education intervention on critical nutrition literacy of adolescent girls in rural Ghana" was praised by the evaluation committee.

Congratulations Dr Ghadirian, and wishing you all the best in your future endeavours!

Katherine Wingert Pizarro, a PhD candidate in the Division of Social & Transcultural Psychiatry at McGill will be defending her thesis on November 7th. Her doctoral research evaluates a participatory intervention to promote psychosocial wellbeing in Indigenous communities in Guatemala.
