10 Apr: Good Friday walk to Pace Egg play from Todmorden to Heptonstall

Twice before, 3 Valley Vegans ended a great walk at the Pace Egg Play(s) in Heptonstall. We’re going to do it again this year and this time our walk will start in Todmorden. It will take us around 3 hours to walk the 9 km (5.5 miles) route to Heptonstall and, if we arrive on time, we will be able to watch the Calder High School version of the play at 3pm and the Heptonstall Players’ version at 4pm. (Final details TBC)

  • Time & date: Good Friday, 10th April 2020 before 11:30 am as we will leave promptly at that time.
  • Book your place so we know you are coming...

Vegan Black Forest Stout served from the cask

Have you heard of the independent, Yorkshire-based Brass Castle Brewery? They are based in Malton and have two vegan founders.

Brass Castle won gold and silver place for 'Beer of the Festival' at the Manchester Beer Festival 2019. They won another award at the Halifax beer festival - the stout was the most popular beer voted by the public.

Mini review on Film and talk night ‘Plant-basing the future: Your diet for our planet’

Last month we hosted a Veganuary film and talk night called Plant-basing the future: Your diet for our planet featuring a guest speaker from Extinction Rebellion (XR).

We explored the climate change and other environmental impacts of diets based on meat, fish and dairy. We also discussed and successfully challenged some claims that some forms of animal-based agriculture are still compatible with climate change mitigation.

Video: The UK in 100 seconds

"I don’t think anyone really has a clue what Britain actually looks like," says Dan Raven-Ellison, guerrilla geographer, National Geographic Explorer, filmmaker.

Watch his film "The UK in 100 seconds", narrated by Benjamin Zephaniah, as Dan goes on a walk across the United Kingdom to show the correct proportions of our landscape. Every 1 second of the film represents what 1% of the UK looks like from the air.

Origins of major human infectious diseases

Did you know.... Most and probably all infectious diseases have spread to humans from other animals because of farming and meat-eating. For example:

  • Bird Flu & Thyphoid (from chickens);
  • CJD, Small Pox & Measles (from cows);
  • TB (cows & goats);
  • Flu (ducks);
  • Common Cold (horses);
  • Whooping Cough, Trichinonsis & Hepatitis E (pigs);
  • AIDS, Ebola & Margburg disease (monkeys);
  • Anthrax (sheep);
  • SARS (from palm civets);
  • Leprosy (Water Buffaloes);
  • Malaria (pigs or chickens);
  • Bubonic Plague (cats not rats);
  • Helicobacter pullorum – common cause of diarrhoea (chickens)…

Tuberculosis is still mostly spread by milk-drinking! See e.g. Wolfe N. D. et al (2007)Origins of major human infectious diseases‘ Nature 447, 279-283
