WPN FEBRUARY 2023
The Planning Stages Issue
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
From Kathleen Kaiser, President
I spent several years in my twenties living and working in non-white countries and quickly realized that being "other" changed my perspective and helped me align my values with a more global view. We all have stories, many based on our life experiences. Many urban Americans would have trouble adjusting to rural American life and vis versa. (Isn't that a Hallmark Movie theme?)
But those differences give us strength, show us a broader view of the world, and can enlighten people about the many beauties and wonders that fill this tiny planet where we reside. If you are an underrepresented voice, we'd like to hear from you about your experiences.
In this issue, be sure to check out our extensive list of conferences and book festivals for you to attend.

From Sandra Murphy, Editor
This week brought the usual angst of potential bad weather. Do I fight the crowds at the grocery store, elbowing my way to milk, bread, and toilet paper (while masked, of course, but one of the few who are), or do I make a list of ideas to pitch to magazines? Work on fiction in (no) progress? Declare a Snow Day and see what movies I’m behind on? In the end, the 4 to 6 inches of predicted snow turned into a measly, wet, 1 to 2 inches and barely covered my car’s windshield. I’m glad I didn’t have to shovel my way out to a “real job” or lose power, but I missed that first look out the door that says, “I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to.” Weather excuses—they either spur you to work on something that’s been put aside far too long or give you permission to build a snowman without guilt. Or maybe have cookies for dinner.
I believe I could fit in one more Snow Day this season without griping about the weather, but just one.

Ask the Book Doctor: About Extensive Rewrites and Poetic Techniques by Bobbie Christmas
Q: A friend of mine is a male writer with a manuscript that has a female as the lead character in first person. He has repeatedly gotten rejections and comments that he has not developed her voice, and I concur that he hasn’t, although his plot structure seems good. Would a book doctor’s duties include rewriting all fifty of the chapters of the book to make the female character’s voice come to life?

As an author, you should never stop learning. You want to always be honing your craft, building your voice, learning the rules of grammar, and so much more. You can do this easily with online classes or YouTube videos, but one of the best ways to grow as a writer is by attending conferences.
These days, you can attend conferences both online and in person, and while it’s incredibly easy and still valuable to watch online, I always recommend visiting in person. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to network, learn new skills, gain exposure, and even make a few friends.
You should never walk into a conference empty-handed and without proper preparation, so here’s everything you need to know.

Update: Amazon Is Changing Its Ebook Return Policy in Major Breakthrough for Authors
January 19, 2023
Amazon reported they are in the final stages of making technical changes and will roll out the new policy in the U.S. before the end of January. The former policy allowed readers to return ebooks online within seven days of purchase, regardless of the amount read. Amazon changed its ebook return policy to restrict automatic returns to purchases where no more than 10 percent of the book has been read.
The Authors Guild was instrumental in making this change happen for authors and publishers.
