Milk is baby's first food and for good reason - it's designed to have the perfect balance of fat, protein and carbohydrates along with all of the other micronutrients the baby needs to thrive. However, this is based on breast milk, and once you switch the child to cow's milk, problems can start to happen for some.
The testimonial below is an edited excerpt of one mother's journey as her child was only having milk and it was causing a lot of problems. Many children are 'addicted' to milk not only because it gives them the comfort of that first food they remember, but also because it has compounds in it that can affect the brain, both in a stimulatory and sedative way. It all depends on the child's underlying health and what else they are eating but you will see below that if you are brave enough to take milk out of your child's diet, you may achieve remarkable results!
Please always work with a health professional before removing foods from your child's diet so that any gaps in nutrition can be addressed.
Freddie's Story
Before working with Brainstorm Health, Freddie was refusing almost all food and would only accept milk in his bottle. He couldn’t sleep, sometimes only getting two or three hours a night. Constipation was a big issue and he was so thin and unwell looking.
By his third birthday, Freddie seemed to regress and his symptoms became more severe including repetitive behaviours, sensory overload, self-harming and extreme anxiety. He also stopped all recognition of us and shut himself off from anything or anyone around him. I was of course very worried and sought medical help.
After many visits with doctors and paediatricians, I was dismissed every time, being told all these symptoms were because he was autistic and this was common. I couldn’t just leave it there, I had to help him and somehow knew there must be another way.
Literally a week after starting Brainstorm Health’s protocol Freddie slept through the whole night! Kirsty told us the importance of removing dairy, gluten, soya, and corn as these are the most common foods children react to and can cause a lot of health problems. I was so worried about taking him off his milk but once we did, he started eating three meals a day and his tolerance to new foods improved.
To go from watching my son refuse all food while looking so frail to then see him eat almost anything let alone every meal was the most amazing feeling. Within 8 weeks on the programme he had stopped hitting himself, his anxiety subsided, and he could cope with change and routine. This was more than I could have hoped for.
Lab tests showed he had a very high intolerance to dairy which was so sad to me because I had no idea a common food like this could be harmful for my son and he was literally living off just milk for so long.
We worked on a lot of other things besides just removing dairy, addressing nutrient deficiencies, parasites, KPU among other things, but what struck me the most was how much of an impact a food like milk can have on a child and that by removing it can give the opportunity for everything else to improve. Of course no doctor or paediatrician would have ever suggested this.
I’m continued to be amazed by my beautiful Freddie and his progress and would not have been able to do all this without Kirsty’s knowledge and support. I can't recommend Brainstorm Health enough!
