On this Resurrection Sunday we celebrate the fact that the tomb is empty! Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus lives!

Luke 23: 44-47 shows us how Jesus’ death ushered in darkness and then light. It reads, “It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. 

The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.”
But thanks be God, the story doesn’t end here.

The instant darkness following Jesus’ crucifixion shows us all the magnitude of His sacrifice and the impact of what His death meant for humanity. Shortly after, though, light shined through with the reality of the resurrection coming to fulfillment. The centurion clearly realized that something profound happened, as this verse shows.

Jesus was crucified, died for our sins, was buried and then was raised from the dead just as God promised. Jesus rose and transformed history forever!

Mark 16: 5-7 reads, “As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

To God Be The Glory, The resurrection is the most important event in human history. This Bible verse shows us what happened when the disciples went to Jesus’ tomb. They discovered it was empty -- that Jesus was raised from the dead. He fulfilled His promise to die, rise again and ensure salvation for His people. It’s a sacrifice and message that continues to change lives around the globe.

    "Resurrection Power!" Luke 24:1-12, 30-35
    
    Lesson Nugget:
    In Luke 24:1-12, 30-35, records the early morning travel of the women who loved Jesus going to the tomb where he was laid after his crucifixion to complete the burial rituals of the time.  To their surprise the stone that had sealed the tomb had been rolled away revealing an empty tomb. Angelic messengers announced to the women that Jesus had risen from the dead as he said he would and the women were directed to go tell his disciples this news.
    
    On this Resurrection Sunday, we still marvel at Jesus' resurrection and joyously celebrate Jesus keeping his word. Are we anxiously spreading the word of Jesus' resurrection with similar enthusiasm and urgency as the women did on that faithful morning?

Welcome to the 40 Year Christians' Cooking Corner! 

Here we will feature recipes from the 40 Year Christian Group. This week's recipe was submitted by Sister Alyce Emerson from Nutrition Education Program UK Cooperative Extension Service.

Lasagna Soup

Ingredients

• 1 pound lean ground beef
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
• 1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce
• 1 box (32 ounces) low-sodium chicken, vegetable, or beef broth
• 12 ounces water (fill half of the marinara jar)
• 6 sheets lasagna noodles, broken into bite-size pieces (NOT oven-ready noodles)
• 1 container (10 ounces) frozen, chopped spinach
  
  Optional toppings: a scoop of ricotta or cottage cheese, a sprinkle of parmesan or mozzarella cheese

Directions

1. Wash hands with soap and warm water, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.
2. Heat a large pot over medium-high heat. Add beef to pot and break into fine crumbles.
   Season with salt and pepper.
   Cook beef until it's no longer pink and it reaches 160 degrees F using a food thermometer. Drain any fat.
3. Add marinara sauce, broth, and water to the pot with beef. Increase heat to high, place lid on the pot and bring to a boil, about 6 minutes
4. Once boiling, add lasagna noodles and lower heat to medium-high. Stir occasionally so noodles do not stick to the bottom of the pot. Cook uncovered for about 6 minutes, or until noodles are close to being done.
5. Add frozen spinach. Cook until noodles have a bit of firmness left and until spinach is heated through, about 2 to 3 minutes.
   
6. Ladle into bowls and add desired toppings.
   
7. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.

Note: Any short-shaped pasta will work for this soup.

Career: I am a community advocate. I have had different job titles to walk out this career path which is also a calling. They have included assignments in Corrections, Juvenile Justice and supporting non-profits, including Within Our Father’s House, a non-profit I lead.

What do you want your church family to know about you?:
Within Our Father’s House has a track record of providing food programs for children. The number of children who go hungry in our community grieves my heart. I want to change that. When people see me pushing myself to serve the community, they sometimes ask me,” Why? It’s because of what my grandmother, Ms. Paulina taught me. She said, “When GOD asks you to do something, you do it! Do it or GOD will sit you down. Do the assignments (HE brings to you through others).”

I am an avid reader. I get that from my mother. I also enjoy studying GOD’s word. I thoroughly enjoyed attending seminary. I liked being in the classes. Being in the classroom is different from being online.

I get a similar joy when I’m teaching our Children’s Ministry. I enjoy seeing them “get it!” I also find joy in seeing our church’s family dynamics. It is inspiring to see families working together especially when they include their youth and children in serving GOD as a priority.

The children know that I want them to use scripture to affirm themselves, to know they matter and are important to GOD. I want us all to do that!

Is there anything special your church can do for you?
I have a desire to go back to seminary school. I’m interested in Christian counseling, particularly for youth. I want GOD to use me in the community, to use us (HPGMBC Family). Pray for my strength as I trust HIM to show me my assignment(s).

What do you want your church family to know about GOD?:
GOD is e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g! GOD provides! GOD supplies! GOD decides!

The month of April is celebrated as National Donate Life month. The network for Hope is a sponsor of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team and they have offices in Cincinnati, Lexington and surrounding Central Kentucky cities. Heart transplant recipient, Mr. Alejandro Arreola, was chosen to throw out the first pitch at the Reds vs Mariners baseball game which was played on Jackie Robinson Day, April 15th 2025. Alejandro is the heart recipient of Antonio Franklin's heart donation after death. Alejandro chose Ricardo Franklin to be the catcher for the ball that he pitched.  Antonio Franklin was the son of the late Sister Anita Franklin and grandson of Sister Nancy Holmes. Antonio was the brother of Ricardo Franklin and La Nisha Conner. The Network for Hope Office Staff was present at the event as well as members and friends of the Franklin, Rowe, and Holmes families. The group gathered on the baseball field for the first pitch and photo opportunities.

It was a wonderful day that was enjoyed by all. To God be the glory for all He has done!

Resilience When Stressed

To be resilient In stressful situations requires the ability to; Focus on self care, connect with others and practice mindfulness. Prioritize your physical wellbeing and engage in activities you enjoy. Build strong relationships, lean on your family and friends for emotional support and guidance. Connect with others who share your interests and seek professional and spiritual counseling when needed. Practice expressing gratitude for what you have and reflect on the positive aspects of your life. Find meaningful goals and work towards them to completion and learn from past experiences. Remember to avoid negative coping mechanisms and refrain from substances and engaging in behavior that threatens or worsens your mental health. Remember to take care of you!

FLU

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.

RSV

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.

COVID-19

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.

The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.
