Dear ,

November was eventful for us with the 2 fintech festivals in Hong Kong and Singapore spicing it all up. We got them all covered with all sorts of formats: keynote, forum, seminar, exhibition and bootcamp!

Highlighting a few of them to just share a taster: Charlie teamed up with r3 Corda specialists to roll out their first APAC Bootcamp teaching CorDapps which was well attended by 60 developers; Florian gave a keynote “Picasso for everyone” at the CUHK conference on Financial Technology, and joined by Seen Meng at the Pension forum hosted by Asia Asset Management discussing developments on digital asset management; Alex and team flew to Singapore and presented FinFabrik for the first time at the world’s largest Fintech Festival attended by close to 40,000 visitors. Alex also spoke at the FIX conference, Blockshow and the Asian Network Forum in Singpoare about his views on digital asset-backed securities DBAS as the next step revolutionising the capital markets. We will not forget about our collaboration with Campfire, that rallied an engaged audience to our panel of experts discussing some of the buzz and bubbles in the blockchain scene. On a final note, don’t miss out our case study with AWS that made us proud!

A letter in letter

Alex put together some words for the team before he left for a drizzling Christmas. We’d like to share this also with you, who are supportive to us in so many different ways.

Dear Team of Rockstars,

Ah! 2018…One year we are bound to remember as a company and as individuals too…Well, at least for some of us though Tanuj, I think you beat us all! It is critical to pause, take stock and get a flavour for what we have been through. My flavour is part bitter, part sweet. What’s yours? Bitter because it was a year so hard that I really don’t know how we have pulled through it.

Flo and I spent a lot of time on funding: first with a seed round from friends that was extremely close to our demise and then the seed extension with the “name-not-to-be-known-yet” that lasted for almost half year! Funding is a necessary evil but it consumes a lot of energy and time. The good thing is that we have learned a lot in the process and we have acquired the right contacts to get us to a sizeable series A when we’ll need it. Having our General Counsel Ben on the team has made us so much stronger in mind and material.

Only do we know now but we were ill-timed with CryptoFabrik, when the retail flows started to dry up. As we are not a supertanker and the question was not on the tech but more on the momentum (or lack of) we could react to the adversity and re-position ourselves as fast as possible.

We lost some teammates and friends which is inevitable in any human enterprise but we stay true to our motto of “not being assholes”: we keep in touch, help them in some cases to move on and the door is never closed.

A bitter taste never lasts beyond a nagging feeling of “I don’t want to have that thing ever again!” and overall it is a sweet picture.

We finally have a product and clients who will use it. It will be complete early 2019 (I keep it vague so as to not add any stress in this period of festivities!) Cryptos are not dead, it’s just that the flow is more institutionalised now and this evolution is set to continue. We are well placed to benefit on the tech side with CryptoFabrik as well as on business side with QuantFabrik. QF is in the sweet spot of providing to players in the market who need hedging and market-making strategies.

We are at the right time and place for witnessing and being part of an explosion of DLT applications and particularly in capital markets with the advent of DABS since the middle of the year. Big institutions have noticed us and are engaging to develop commercial and meaningful relationships. We have signed clients and have more than a healthy pipeline of prospects. We also have a healthy pipeline of partners particularly on the custody side. Our mix of solutions and businesses are coming together nicely and the first six months of 2019 are critical for us to move to the next stage.

Our aim is to become a platform of choice for issuing, listing, trading and market-making, it is for the humans and institutions to use our best-in-class solutions made with a lot of care.

Our mission is very simple:

Thank you for your contribution in 2018. I am looking forward to working closer with you in 2019 to write the next chapter of Capital Markets. It is going to be more focused, fast-paced, demanding but we have our future in our own hands which means if we do it right, we will all be rewarded.

I have two goals for 2019: bring us to free cashflow and close a significant series A.

Pause and look back to learn what went well and wrong but more importantly relax and celebrate as we will need some energy in the new year.

Loads of love

Before the holidays kicked in, we managed to spend some cosy time together. Wishing you all a merry christmas and a happy new year ❤

Tanuj: What’s in for CryptoFabrik 2019

2018 was quite a year for our product team. CryptoFabrik started the year as a simple design on a prototyping tool. Along the way some very talented developers and designers transformed it into one of the first integrated trading platforms for virtual assets. Our team was small, but our goals were ambitious. Over the year we integrated with over 15 different exchanges, added smart routing functionality, created trading screens for both retail and professional traders and finally, staying true to our B2B roots, developed middle office tools as well.

In a market as dynamic as this one, you can’t stop to breathe for even a second. That’s why our plans for next year are bigger and better. By utilising our aggregated order book and order splicing functionality in a virtual assets ecosystem that is fast evolving, we’re able to provide professional traders and institutions with the technology which will give them the differentiating edge they need. Not only are we providing the technology capable of sourcing and executing at the best price, but we will be providing additional sources of liquidity to institutions.

No longer will Institutions longer need to worry about going through account opening procedures at multiple exchanges, they can now simply transfer their fiat or virtual asset holdings to our company, and we will manage liquidity and security across exchanges.

Q: Who are you?

Of course, analysis can sometimes give more accurate results than intuition but usually it’s just a lot of work. I normally do what my intuition tells me to do. Most of the time spent thinking is just double-check.     - Magnus Carlsen-

I am Pati and I am a very smart and diligent project manager at FinFabrik. I do a lot of fun things as a project manager, my favourite part is meeting people, learning from my interactions with people and doing diagrams, charts and presentations to present them to people. Yes, you guessed right people are my thing! As a PM I also spend a lot of time reading and writing about regulations, first world problems (haha), blockchain and other technologies and how to fix the world problems using those technologies. Oh! and of course I also manage projects, the most interesting, challenging and coolest projects you could ever think of. I am a lucky project manager! When I am not on project management mode, I play rugby, teach chess to kids, read about space, watch stand-up comedy or I enjoy life with my three brothers (on WhatsApp), significant other : ) and/or friends.

Weaknesses: Not very good with words, struggle with precision when communicating ideas, don’t like Vietnamese food, need a lot of recognition from people I admire, very transparent/non-filtered, stubborn, could be more structured.

Strengths: Optimistic and a doer, chilled, reliable, loyal, committed, a great cook, very good at basketball (hahaha), enthusiastic, curious, thoughtful, like learning, consistent.

I have found FinFabrik a place where I can be myself, a place where I am surrounded by great people, very good at what they do but most importantly good humans or aliens who knows! (some of them are way too smart to be humans lol) a place where I am encouraged to learn, to share, to participate…

Q: What do you care about?

I care about things because they are part of my identity, I care about things because it makes me happy to care about those things and I care about things because it makes sense.

I care about chess, god and my family.

Why? A place to go when you feel disconnected, a place to go when things don’t make a lot of sense, a place to go when you need a reminder of what is important.

I care about work, loving people, staying connected to people, not becoming insensitive to what happens around me and staying curious.

Why? Structure, structure, structure, purpose and a healthy sense of belonging.

Make sense

I care about the research done at CERN, gravitational waves, blockchain, having a healthy lifestyle and keeping an open mind.

Why? It makes sense: )

Feliz Navidad!

On closing

Equanimity gives you access to different dimensions of the mind. Another important quality is that you need exuberance, both physiologically and internally. Only when your energies are exuberant do you have the ability to tide over obstacles in day-to-day life and move towards your success.

See you in 2019!

Blissfully yours,
