Changes to the 2020 Council of Delegates Meeting

With some sadness, we have to inform you that we have been discussing with NAFA (the North American Falconers' Association) the most likely direction for the IAF AGM/Council of Delegates Meeting this year, 2020.

Due to the complex logistics for international travel caused by visa restrictions, the reduced number of international flights, the lack of travel funds for most of the world’s citizens, quarantine issues and more, all as a result of the global COVID19 pandemic, we are now informing you that IAF will not travel and that we will hold our Annual Meeting by video-conference, most likely by Zoom, on the same dates, November 22nd - 24th, or during that week. Exact dates, times and agenda to be advised, and instructions for attending the virtual meetings will be sent to you by email.

Kearney is always an excellent location for the IAF AGM, the welcome is always warm and the hunting opportunities varied and excellent; NAFA members enjoy the international delegates and we all enjoy sharing the common bond of falconry. We sincerely hope that we may travel again to Kearney at the earliest opportunity available to us.

CAP has not halted decline of Biodiversity on European farmland

The European Court of Auditors published the Special Report Biodiversity on farmland: CAP contribution has not halted the decline.

In Europe, the number and variety of species on farmland – “farmland biodiversity” – has declined over many years. The EU Commission adopted a biodiversity strategy in 2011, to halt the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of ecosystems by 2020, and restoring them as far as possible. In particular, the Commission committed to increasing the contribution of agriculture and forestry to maintaining and enhancing biodiversity.

In this report, the auditors assess whether the Common Agricultural Policy helped to maintain and enhance biodiversity. It examines the EU’s efforts to achieve its 2020 biodiversity targets and provides recommendations. See document

Bayazira Association in Algeria participates in educational measures to prevent habitat destruction through forest fires

As part of the joint cooperation between Djelfa forest conservation and Djelfa hunters federation, the falconers of Bayazira Association participated in a clean-up and awareness campaign to prevent the danger of forest fires, in order to preserve the forest and animal wealth. Habitat loss is a key threat to raptors all over the world and the restoration and protection of such habitats is vital for a healthy ecosystem and for the raptors that live in them.

World Falconry Day: November 16th

A lot of meetings and projects have been cancelled this year because of the Covid-19, but now, with the slow opening-up in most of the affected countries, and with a little bit of imagination, some projects should be possible, specifically "World Falconry Day” on 16th November 2020! We are making a loud call to every one of you and your club members to organise something to celebrate it.

It can be a small hunting meeting, a visit to a school, a workshop to make some falconry gear, an exhibition in a museum or a fair, a photo or a drawing contest..... and so many others! Please make some pictures and send them to boukje@iaf.org, and give us your permission to use them. We use those photos for updating the UNESCO recognition, which must be done regularly.

Don’t forget the IAF rules for pictures! Here is a link to them. Preference is given to people with birds, birds and dogs, flying birds.

We count on you to share this email with as many falconers as you can, including those falconers who are not part of any club!

Disease Profiles Series #5 Parasites:

The IAF Welfare Working Group hereby releases the fifth instalment of its series of concise and clear information on common diseases that affect the birds of prey used in falconry. Eventually, it is hoped to bind them into a booklet and to promote them on our website and social media, as a reference for falconers and for those vets who may not be familiar with avian diseases, but may come across them; in many countries there are no avian veterinary specialists and these should encourage them to look deeper. The fifth in the series, “Parasites”, has been prepared by Andrea Villa and Dr. Dominik Fischer, DipECZM (WPH), University of Giessen, with input from the rest of the IAF Ethics and Welfare Working Group.
