Drip irrigation systems are recommended for flower beds, vegetable gardens, trees and shrubs, and container plants - basically plants and trees that are spaced apart. For lawns, spray sprinklers are still recommended because they provide more coverage (but be sure to install a Smart Sprinkler System to ensure you are using your water efficiently).
Another benefit to microirrigation is that it prevents weed growth because it doesn’t water the surrounding mulch or soil. It also prevents the need for pesticides because the plants are healthier and there is no “pool” of water around the plants.
After you make the change, it’s worth it to check with your local municipality and/or water agency to learn about any rebates they may offer by installing a drip irrigation system. Not only will the new system save you money over the years, but a nice rebate might be available to you now to help cover the costs.
There is so much work to do to heal our planet that it can feel overwhelming to determine where to start. That’s why 7th Generation Advisors launched the Personal Climate Action Center, a new initiative designed to encourage people to take individual action against climate change.
At 7th Generation Advisors we
are diligently working with scientists, policymakers, activists and
clean tech companies to create a clean energy economy for all, to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, and to protect all living things seven
generations into the future. We care about the future of our planet.
