Garfield 16 | Outdoor Ed
Things have been busy at Garfield 16! While there have been a lot of programs happening, there are two exciting programs to highlight. First, On January 16, Ari Philipson planned a Staff Meetup for Garfield 16 staff. They went snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at the County Line Trail on the Grand Mesa. The trip was made possible through a partnership with Grand Mesa Nordic Council. The Council maintains the public trails during the winter and allows Garfield 16 staff access to these trails, only asking for donations. Ari hauled the Generation Wild trailer full of gear provided for free for staff to use. There were about 17 participants.
The second, On January 24, Philipson visited CFL's first-grade classes to give an "animal adaptations" lesson. Students were able to look at pelts from several different animals. CFL first graders were able to touch the pelts, noting their texture, color, and how those characteristics match the environment where the animal lives. This lesson taught students how to connect ecosystems to animal characteristics.
As far as up-and-coming events, 4th graders from BUE will be heading up to the Grand Mesa where the local Kiwanis Club hosts their Winter Ecology Trips. The students are invited to join the Kiwanis Club on the Grand Mesa where they learn all about winter ecology.
