Escape Velocity: Building A Career Beyond Your Job Many of us wrap our identities in our jobs. But we should think a little bit differently to position ourselves for escape velocity. Remember that your job is a moment in time and a chapter in your life story.
Fill your bingo card - Build out a broad skillset. Don't fixate solely on mastery. Get some range. Deliver results while you grow.
Consider what you take with you - Answer the question, " What will we take with us when we go elsewhere?"
Don’t define yourself based on your job - If you anchor your identity in your job, your self-worth can fall like a stack of cards. People learn it the hard way during retrenchments, but don't wait till you're in that situation to decouple your identity. Define yourself by your skills and demonstrated impact
Know your reputation - Are you a positive-sum player? Do you create impact? What is your working style like? Your reputation precedes you.
Encourage your friends - Sometimes a little bit of affirmation can push someone to take a first step
Create generative social activities - Occasionally or frequently, create social events that spark new friendships and possibilities.
Do mentorship, either informally or formally - Provide one-on-one education in the skills you have, to the extent that you can
