Today's Bible Study Lesson
“The
Word Heals”
Aim:
Understand the definition of
faith and how Christ honors faithfulness;
Accept
that faith in Christ strengthens the relationship between Christ and
the believer; and Trust
Jesus, by faith and action, to what we cannot do.
Background:
John 4:46-54
Bible
Lesson:
John
4:46-54
“So
the father knew that it was at the same hour, in which Jesus said
unto him. Thy son liveth: and himself believed and his whole house.”
John 4:53 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Apostle John is the author of the Gospel According to John and the
New Testament Books of 1, 2, and 3 John. John was one of Jesus
twelve disciples and on many occasions he was referred to as “the
disciple that Jesus loved.” While dying on the cross for the sins
of humankind, Jesus assigned the care of His “earthly mother” to
John. John was a member of Jesus’ inner circle of disciples,
Peter, James, and John who were with Jesus at the Mount of
Transfiguration and in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Gospel
According to John differs from the Synoptic Gospels (According to
Matthew, to Mark, and to Luke), in that it deals in great detail
with many doctrinal matters and facts. Today’s lesson shows how
Jesus spoke the Word of healing and never came in physical contact
to effect physical healing. It also points out how our faith in God
can bring about a positive outcome in unexpected ways.
- John
4:46-47, Flawed believing Faith: As
Jesus was traveling through Galilee, he
arrived in Cana, where he
had performed his first miracle. There was a
wedding in Cana where
Jesus, his disciples
and Mary, Jesus’ earthly mother, were in attendance. When the wine
ran
out prematurely, Mary asked Jesus for assistance. Jesus gave
instructions for the servants to
fill some Jewish purification
jars with water. He
directed a servant to draw
out of a jar and to take
it to the feast host. When the
host tasted it, it
was no longer water but wine of
such quality that he complimented the bridegroom for saving the best
wine for last. Many
followed Jesus because of his teaching and his miraculous healing of
the sick. Word
traveled fast of Jesus’
whereabouts. A certain
unnamed government official sought out Jesus to come to Capernaum to
heal his terminally ill son. He found Jesus and begged him to come
with him to heal his son. The desperate father believed Jesus had to
come to his house to heal his son, so he
begged Jesus to come to his
house to aid his son.
- John
4:48, The Challenge of Faith: Jesus’
response to the father’s request was not just directed
to him, but to all who were
in earshot. Jesus questioned whether they would believe that he was
the Messiah without
his performance
of miracles
and wonders. Jesus’ miraculous acts gave
authenticity
to His Messiahship;
however, His mission was far greater. He
was to make known the
Father God and to repair
the broken relation between God and
humankind by atoning for
our
sins with his death and shed blood.
-
John
4:49-51, Dismantling Earthly Expectation: The
desperate father restated his request with added urgency that if
Jesus didn’t come to his home soon he feared that his son would
die.
Jesus
addressed the desperate father’s request by assuring him that his
son would recover from his illness and live. Jesus further directed
him to return home. With Jesus’ words, the father believed that
all would be well with his son and he obediently headed for home.
Before
he reached his home, several of his servants excitedly came to him
with the glad news that his son was alive and well.
-
John
4:52-54, The Healing Word of Jesus: Even
with
obvious
excitement and relief from the good news of his son’s recovery,
the father asked the servants when did his son’s recovery begin.
The time of his son’s sudden fever disappearance coincided with
the very time that Jesus had reassured him that his son would
recover and live. The father realized Jesus had healed his son by
just speaking the Word
of Healing.
This was only the second miracle performed by Jesus in Galilee. Such
a miraculous act convinced not only the father, but his whole
household that Jesus was the Messiah. Not only had the son received
healing, but because
of their faith the
whole household received Spiritual Healing
which was needed even more than physical healing. For those who were
physically healed would eventually physically die; however, Eternal
Life is
available with
faith in Jesus Christ.
Take
Aways:
- Our
faith must be in Jesus Christ, who can move in any way He pleases
- Our
God is faithful and can
be
trusted in every aspect of our lives
- Each
experience with God’s involvement with our lives brings us closer
to Him
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Now
faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things
not seen.” Hebrews
11:1 KJV
“But
without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh
to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them
that diligently seek him.” Hebrews
11:6 KJV
“(For
we walk by faith, not by sight:) 2 Corinthians
5:7 KJV
“While
we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are
not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the
things which are not seen [are] eternal.” 2 Corinthians
4:18 KJV
“Jesus
said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have
believed. Blessed [are] those who have not seen and [yet] have
believed." John
20:29 NKJV
“The
LORD [is] my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.”
Lamentations 3:24 KJV
