June 2020 Newsletter

It's a new month, and I am happily writing this newsletter intro from my office at HDD!  We resumed non-emergent care in the middle of May and have been able to tend to many patients' needs that were put on hold during the peak of COVID-19 in our region.  We have been mindfully operating in this "new normal" we're all presented with, and we continue to adhere to optimal safety standards and infection control procedures.  We've adjusted some of our processes in accordance with state guidelines, and there's a feature outlining how that will change your dental visit below.  All in all, I am just so grateful to be back with my team and doing what I love in taking care of all of your smiles.  There is a big announcement in this newsletter so make sure you read all the way through!  Stay safe, stay healthy.  See you at your next visit!

Dr. Jose A. Gil

It is a little odd to think of time demarcated as "before COVID" and "after COVID," but for most of us, a global pandemic is likely to be one of the most impactful experiences of our lives.  It undoubtedly has affected every individual in one way or another, and the dental field is no exception.  Since the 1980's, dental offices have been notably contaminant conscious.  In fact, outside of a surgical operating room, you will be hard-pressed to find another health-care facility where the amount of PPE and attention to sterilization is as emphasized as it is within a dental office. For us, being aware of potential risks for cross-contamination is standard of care.  That said, with the advent of new contagions like COVID-19, there is always a need to do better and reevaluate protocols.  You'll be advised of a new check-in process as we confirm your appointments in the coming weeks, and you may notice some changes around our office.  Below is a list of what you can expect:

  • All forms are paperless - emails or text links are sent to all patients ahead of their appointment times so the dynamic forms and consents can be completed in advance on your own device.  *If necessary, we can provide a tablet in the office that is sterilized after use.
  • On the morning of your appointment, you will receive a link to a COVID screening form that we ask you to complete before check-in.
  • When you arrive for your appointment, call or text the front desk to check-in.
  • We will confirm our receipt of a COVID screening form (or resend, if necessary) and advise you of the status of your operatory.
  • When your operatory is ready, we will call or text you to invite you into the office.
    • ONLY patients with appointments (and ONE guardian with a minor) will be allowed to visit.
    • While it is mandated in Pennsylvania, we require everyone to wear a mask when entering the office.
  • Sanitize your hands as you enter the office.
  • Your temperature will be taken and recorded at the front desk.
  • In each operatory, there is a dedicated True HEPA air filtration/UV-C light device that continuously turns over and purifies the air.
  • Our team members may be wearing additional personal protective equipment depending on the planned procedure for your appointment.

As always, your safety and that of our team is our primary concern.  It is also imperative that we continue to attend to your oral health care because we know how much it can affect your overall health status if let go.  If you help us follow the above protocol, we'll be able to proceed without compromising either concern.

Virtual Consults with Dr. Gil

Last month, we added a virtual consult platform to our website and social media pages.  It has been able to help patients receive answers to questions during a time when we were all to be staying at home as much as possible, but it promises to be a great tool moving forward for you to conveniently reach Dr. Gil with any questions you have about what is possible with your smile.  It's very simple to use.  Click on the Smile Virtual Consult link, upload a picture of your smile, write a brief description of your question or concern, and Dr. Gil will send you back a personal video regarding your case.  He'll give you an idea about costs and the number of appointments your situation might require.  The best part: it's all FREE!  If you've ever had a burning question about improving your smile, wondered if something were achievable with your teeth, or were unaware of how much it would cost, this is a great way for you to shed light on those answers.  Try it out!

dr.josegil The HDD team members are already experts in infection control, but this past week we were able to all go over the increased measures of protection we have implemented in our office in the new world of COVID-19. I'm looking forward to seeing you next week! 😷😆

Meet Dr. Kuperavage!

We are very excited to announce that we will be adding a doctor to our top notch team at HDD - Dr. Brooke Kuperavage. Dr. Kuperavage grew up just an hour west of the Lehigh Valley in Cumbola, Pennsylvania. She completed her Bachelors of Science with a degree in Biology (Summa Cum Laude) from Moravian College, where she also was a member of the Moravian College Dance Company. Dr. Kuperavage continued her education at Temple University where she received her Doctorate of Dental Medicine, also earning Summa Cum Laude honors.

Dr. Kuperavage chose to continue her education by completing her general practice residency training at Lehigh Valley Health Network-Muhlenberg, where she had the opportunity to further develop her skills and treat more complex patients in a hospital setting. Dr. Kuperavage is excited to be returning to the Lehigh Valley after having spent a few years practicing in Central Pennsylvania. She is a current member of the American Dental Association and Pennsylvania Dental Association. She was also a 2019 volunteer at MOM-n-PA, a yearly two-day clinic event that offers free dental care in Pennsylvania.

Outside of the office, Dr. Kuperavage enjoys spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys cooking and maintaining an active lifestyle. Dr. Kuperavage can be spotted playing in a recreational sports league or attending musicals in New York City with her family.

“The incredible thing about dentistry is that it is not just about teeth, but about the whole patient. Developing strong personal connections with my patients goes hand in hand with providing them with excellent dental care. My purpose is to improve my patient’s overall health and self esteem while lessening the negative stigma associated with going to the dentist office.”

Happy Father's Day - June 21st

Let's hear it for all the dads!  Dads fill many roles in our lives, and they're associated with many stereotypes - jacks-of-all-trades, jokesters, handymen, TV remote-hoggers, masters of the grill.  Dads can be executives, business owners, employees, and many do a wonderful job as stay-at-home parents.  At the end of the day, the best dads are the ones who just make sure their families are loved, as evidenced by their work, hugs, and even sometimes their sweat 😄.  Enjoy a weekend celebrating your dad and all that he does!
