Closing time In more evidence of the tough retail environment right now, there's news of two plant shop closures. Monmouth Houseplants in Wales have announced they are closing their store at Wyastone Business Park. They are moving to online only and specialising in accessories rather than plants. Their final day is June 24, so get to the store for a big sell-off if you can - online you can use SALE25 for 25% off everything on the website. Meanwhile Isherwood Houseplants have closed their shop in Bournville, Birmingham as of this week. They'll still be offering online sales and running workshops and events and taking on private and corporate work. It's a case of "use if or lose it" when it comes to our indie houseplant sellers, folks.
Smokin' job In more positive news, Shop Plants & Papers in Swansea - a houseplants and smoking accessories seller - are looking for new staff - part time and covers. Details here.
Booked in A hotel in London called Dao by Dorsett has launched a plant library so guests can choose a plant to take to their rooms and... care for, I guess? The plant choices worryingly include things that drop dead as soon as you look at them indoors, such as roses, daisies and Aeoniums, although you can also choose a rubber plant and various other species more likely to make it past a couple of weeks. Colour me sceptical but I'd love to know if this scheme is still running in, say, a year's time... It's fabulous to fill public places with plants, but investment in their long term care is vital.
