WORKPLACE BULLYING AWARENESS WEEK - OCTOBER 14 - 20, 2018
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: All this week is Workplace Bullying Awareness Week. And for those in the workforce, you may want to copy the picture at left and place it around your office, if you feel it's appropriate.
Workplace bullying is a phenomenon that is often a feature of organized stalking, although in many instances this activity is confined to one's workplace. Still, it would behoove our community to become aware of and involved in the workplace bullying movement since their successes would positively affect our cause as well.
This movement has gone far ahead and blazed a trail for us to follow.
The Workplace Bullying Institute states on its website that "over 300 individuals of both parties have sponsored some version of the Healthy Workplace Bill." The bill has been introduced in 30 state legislatures since 2001, although none of them has passed it.
The state of Tennessee, though, has taken a step in this direction when it passed its Healthy Workplace Act in July of 2014, however it only applies to state offices, not the private sector.
It requires a huge amount of lobbying and influence to pass this type of legislation even at the state level. There are many competing interests at the capitals. And big money and bigtime politics tend to rule the day at the state and federal level.
Fortunately, however, there is hope at the local level and you will find at this link, an extensive list of California cities and counties that proclaimed the third week of October, 2017 (last year) as Freedom From Workplace Bullies Week.
